So I have a General Electric 3-5254A coming in soon and I have a lot of ideas/plans for this little boombox. One of which, is to paint it either red or turquoise metal flake. Problem is, I like both colors so I can't decide! The colors may differ slightly from the ones in the picture, but which do you guys prefer, red or turquoise? Winning color is the color the boombox shall be!
Also, would anyone be interested in my customization of this boombox enough that they'd like to see a topic on it?
Definitely! How did you solve the problem of white decals?? I am having the same headache in my other hobby of fine-scale modeling and each time its a lot of pain!!!
Leave it silver pleeeeease!! It's beautiful as it is............... I do love to see all the hard work that a restore entails though, so topic mandatory!
I haven't solved the decal problem yet sadly, may take pictures of the decals head on, and use a program of some sort to map them out and print them on decal paper, if my cousin's laser printer could do that... Hopefully. And also, as much as I di love the silver, with all the plans I have for this boombox I want it to stand out in the room xD oh and it arrived today!
As you can see from the photo, I am in love with Red (used Hi-Temp Engine Red with Ceramics, it is extremely scratch-resistant). I am also a big fan of acoustically transparent grille cloth. Airbrushed some Clear Red over silver panel to make it a bit more color-coordinated The only printer which could print decals in white (also gold, silver, and metallic colors) was ALPS, but mine broke in a week or two. All my modelling buddies reported the same: they all broke down and then company went out of business. I see that someone learned how to fix them here: ALPS Printer. I do NOT recommend buying it though, it is much cheaper to order custom decals.
There are a lot of red boomboxes... I haven't seen a turquoise one. I may add another color to the poll.. Dark metallic blue? Specifically Rustoleum Cobalt blue metallic? May change up the poll up to allow vote changes . Anyone know anywhere that would do the custom white GE logo in white? And the function labels as well. Ive seen some places that you can "submit your own art/images" for them to go off of, but they don't take trademarked things things like logos
Nice blue..........I was in the car paint spraying trade for 21 years before I became ill - There are so many great colours out there!!
@nickeccles what is the right way to use metallic paints? I read somewhere that it is a bit more complicated than using solid colors: that first there should be a base paint, then a layer of clearcoat, and only then metallic color. Or clearcoat on top, I did not write it down and now cannot find this tip. My plastic modeling efforts directed mostly onto jet fighters but I am very curious how to reproduce deep metallic sheen I see on some luxury cars. Thank You!!!
Jorge - Yes metallic is indeed a clear over base system, the base can be anything you want & as always, preparation is everything just as it is with a car Spray the base coat sparingly if you are new to the clear over base process, build it up slowly in a dust free area if you can - Once built up you can apply a couple of base coats leaving to touch dry between coats............. I always apply the lacquer coats while the final base coat is still wet I apply a couple of generous coats of the lacquer for good coverage - don't be afraid to spray the final coat but not too close, the 1'st clear coat will help stop any runs but don't let any of the clear coats dry too much if you want a really high gloss finish!!
