My beautiful Zenith R99 won't let me turn it up past 3 without the sound cutting out whenever bass hits. Anyone know what could be wrong with it, beside it being 35 years old?
Here's a video link for what it's doing

Had a problem like this with my Sanyo M9990.
Turned out it was the record switch. I cleaned it before I buttoned up the box, but it needed another dose of Deoxit. When the bass would vibrate the box, the record switch would cut in and out.
Not sure if this is the problem here, but worth looking into as it's an easy place to start.

Does it do this on all sources?

I figured it out. It's the function switch. I removed the main board it is attached to and since I don't have any DeoxIt, I just squirted it with Windex! All this yellow crap came pouring out of it as I switched it back and forth. It was obviously owned by a smoker 'cause I'm sure it's cigarrette tar. Another reason not to smoke. It ruins electronics. Anyway it's all better now!

Aah... The "nicotine" effect. We've all been victims at some point.
Sounds like a similar issue to my 9990, but a different component (switch).

Glad to hear you got it resolved.

It's having the same problem again, only now almost impossible to get sound from radio or line in. Only tape works, where would I ever get a new function switch for this?

I think I'd just invest in some switch cleaner and do all the switches :)

Yup as Si says get some switch cleaner, im not sure Windex would have done it much good. Clean all switches and pots with Deoxit F5, clean the record bar and see how it is.
