    Looking at the photos I have this feeling that rubber got separated from the plastic core. Push the center pin out to see what is actually happening. Agreed, it does not look too good: a little bulge in the center is good for tape self-alignment, but here it looks wrong

    I haven't done any of this work for a long time but that bulge does look wrong, similar to this one on TapeHeads.

    There's some information on pinch rollers on page 34/40 of this old MCM Catalog, they are now Newark Electronics, it might give you a part number to work with.
