I just received a Sony WM-5 which doesn't run. The belt has turned to goo but that is fixable (very dirty work btw). This model also has a center gear which unfortunately in my case is cracked. Does anyone know if the WM-DD series center gear is compatible with the one in the WM5?
folks, the WM-5 does definitively NOT suffer from broken centre-gears as the DD-models, it's inside a WM-2 ! yes, it has got a centre-gear, but its different and NOT interchangable with DD-centre-gear, nor can you fix it f.ex. with Marian's repair-kit (...wich won't be necessary anyway, WM-2 centre-gears do not tend to crack, in fact within at least 50 units WM-2, 5, F2, R2, FM-2 over all those years i never ever had a broken centre-gear - that is mostly dissolved belts but unfortunately also defective motors... WM-5 rocks !
I also thought that these models didn't suffer from a broken gear, but the gear in my WM-5 is broken. But if this is not normal with this model I could look for a replacement out of a WM-2, as I gather from your answer. And if these gears supposedly do not break this would be a long time lasting repair! Thanks! Harry
WM-2, WM-5 and Wm-F2 used two versions of gears in their models. Newer ones used modern (cracking) version of the gear while the older ones used old version of the gear. Usually, WM-2 models with "Walkman II" logo and green PCB inside have new version of the gear.
