What’s everybody’s number one, all time, top of the mountain Walkman? And why?

Can be non-Sony too. I would love a boodo khan but there’s just no way I could ever afford it

For me it would be a sony dc2 because of the quartz lock and the Dolby C but the price is just to much.

So until I can get mines for a lower price I'll have to use my panasonic and thats fine with me.

I love my little panasonic, it's a great alternative to some of sony's dd walkman's and I would recommend it if they weren't so rare.

It's difficult to pick one when you have many top class, but I think I'd pick the DD9:

For it's playing stability and quality, the convenience of the autoreverse, the sturdy body and timeless design.

I have to admit I do love the look of the DD9 and sturdiness but for sound quality it’s the D6C. For everyday portability and sound quality it’s the DC2.

    Aiwa hs-pc202 mk ii.
Sadly I need to change the caps since it's dead atm. I now have a dc2 but it looks alot like that boodo khan puzzle from another thread.
Once i switch the mechanism with a donor wm-DD I'll tell you if ichanged my mind about my holy grail.

    Sanyo M-G3 for me.

Perfect sound, rediculously high quality and absurdly rare.

That Sanyo looks awesome! Like a solid block of aluminum. I've never seen that model before. Looks like it has a stereo mic, was this marketed to journalists for recording or something?

It's an interesting unit, not unlike the Aiwa TP-S30. It's from a period when manufacturers didn't know any better than to give it their all. It's a recording/playback unit with internal and facilitites for external stereo speakers not not primarily a playback unit but you're right, it has that solid, brushed steel, all-metal feel.

This topics asks for 'your' holy grail not which one would go for the most on eBay. I own DD9's, D6C's and DC2's but this Sanyo is the one I identify with the most.

    excellent choice, AO !

here's my one - funny i actually got this one from you - it's also a rare and early bird, i was hesitating between this, a different Sanyo or even my most favourite "Cloneman", the JVC CQ-1K made the race:

sorry it appears to be a bit dusty, but it's allways exposed in a shelve...

I'll change my choice. Since it's a Walkman that means something to the owner as a special unit then for me its the Sony Walkman WM FX-56. It was the first Walkman I had as a teenager. Parents bought me one while on a trip in Malaysia. Used it all the way thru high school. Not the most popular or best sounding but very cool to me nonetheless.

To be fair, the term 'Holy Grail' is a bit wooly. It's meaning is very much open to iterpretation.

    1. The best one you have
    2. The one that gets the most eBay dollar.
    3. The one with the most personal meaning.
    4. The best performer.

For a while a P02MKII was my grail, based on styling alone. Out of all the Aiwas, I think the P02MKII is the best looking. every panel is styled, with creative use of the black mid case band.
Metal front and back, with chrome plated top plate.

It's also the BTTF Walkman, one of my favorite films.

So when a red one popped up on the bay with a BIN of $35, I jumped on it even though it had battery damage. Thankfully the damage is minimal and not visible on the outside or reel table.

My next grail is to find a DD9, for the mechanism engineering. PX303/900, for styling as well. Other "grails" I own are the D6C and DC2.

i have to contradict you - the meaning of "holy grail" is quite clear: your personal no.1 - got nothing to do with value, performance or to be the best, it's best discribed with your point 3 - but i agree that there might be some kind of misunderstanding in the start of this fred (What’s everybody’s number one, all time, top of the mountain Walkman? And why?
    )...

anyway, bub, this AIWA is indeed very, very cool !

I'm not sure how I would define a grail Walkman for myself. There are so many awesome designs out there, but sound quality is pretty important to me too.

One definite contender is this guy:

Unique and really beautiful angular casing, and the promise of great sound quality...if it worked!

My unit has the usual leaked electrolyte problem so I've never been able to listen to it. I recently sent it off for repair though so my hopes are high that I'll find out soon if the sound lives up to the pretty face!

    Nope, this is your interpretation.

    You see my point?
