Problem with radio on Hitachi 3D7

alexis - 2009-08-31 14:52

Hi All,

The radio on my 3D7 is not working probably, I am not able to tune into any stations clearly. I never seam to get a strong signal, even when tuning it into local stations. I recently used an I-trip and the sound was strong, but there was still a "fuzziness" to the sound.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Alexis

Sounds like the tuner is need of a realignment. Bad news is that this isn't something you can do yourself. You'll need an RF signal generator, stereo signal generaotr, millivoltmeter, oscilloscope etc. You'll also need a service manual.

Thanks for the advice.

That is definitely not something I can do!

It's POSSIBLE to do this by trial and error ie. by 'ear' (I successfully did a Pioneer 303) but you need to be extremely careful or you can end up so far out of wack to completely screw the whole tuner.

yeh, my M90 had trouble keeping an FM stereo signal & a small adjustment of one specific pot sorted it. Hopefully it's something similar for you - we need as many 3D7s as possible to be in use! Smile

yeh, love my 3D Superwoofers. Had a few over the years, have now settled for the 3D7 and 3D80 - Quality machine!

I will be looking into the radio issue and will post any information/solutions I find.

Hmm, I'd first suspected in a bad connection between antenna and mainboard.
Maybe, you should check that.

Anyway, good luck with repairing.

This won't be the same problem. The setting you are talking about is the 19khz adjustment which is accomplished via a single trimpot. Turning that by trial and error is not the prescribed manner of adjusting that but it often works close enough to restore stereo locking. In the case of the original poster, he is not complaining of an FM locking issue, rather a tuner tracking issue. That will require adjustment of anywhere from 6 to 8 RF transformers and coils, not something you can really do by ear.

Flying blind is not recommended. In more cases than not, you will mess up the tuner even more. The reason why is that there is a whole bunch of RF transformers or coils that need to be adjusted and they need to be done incrementally in steps. Without a service manual, you won't know which coil or transformer to adjust first. Then each t-fo or coil is supposed to be adjusted when the tuner is at a particular frequency. In other words, you tune to 88mhz first and adjust T-101 (arbitrary). Then tune to 108 and adjust T102. Then repeat, then tune to 98 and adjust T103 etc. etc. Well, if you don't know which transformer to adjust first, and where the tuner is supposed to be at during this adjustment, then you can see how this would indeed be like flying blind.

Most tape deck & power issues I can fix, but I have always walked away from boomboxes listed with a non-working FM tuner. It seems I was right...

Hence my statement about 'play at your own risk'

I'm speaking from my own experience when I adjusted my Pioneer and the results were more than satisfactory, on that occasion. I have some experience in the radio field which helps, others may not, in which case I too would recommend leaving well alone.

I GOT A SERVICE ENGINEER TO RE-ALIGN THE RADIO SIDE ON MY GF-777....THAT WAS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF NOT BEING ABLE TO LOCK ONTO AN FM SIGNAL....IT COST ME £40...WELL WORTH IT ON THAT OCCASION
