jvc m70 help

davebush - 2009-09-27 12:20

hi peeps.....just been giving my m70 a fettle and now ive got it back together (without the back cover on) when im playing a tape , only the left vu works...right one doesnt move at all....iv had a multimeter on the back of it and it does show resistance indicating it has not gone open circuit......is this normal.....thanks

Did you measure the resistance of the meter with the feeder wires disconnected?
If not, you'll get a reading from the driver circuit resistance which will be inconclusive.

Tried tapping the VU meter in case the 'armature' has got stuck? That happened to me recently with one of my RF field strength meters.

Did the meter work before disassembly?
If so it's likely to be simply a wire adrift from the pcb somewhere.

It's not normal. The meters get their signal directly from the amp outputs. If you are seeing proper VU action in line-in or radio function and not tape, then you have a dead channel in the tape section.

Sorry Dave, didn't read that bit!

Presumably both channels work (have sound), or not?

ok guys here`s the update...ive stuck the back on and connected the ariels.....the sound is ok from both the speakers when the mode is selected from the tape, line in and radio..the vu needle does move when i put a multimeter across it so am presuming the needle isnt jammed stuck..but other than that it doesnt move at all....like i said both the speakers are working on the volume controls and sound ok.........ive deoxit all the sliders and selector switches as well......im stumped......

Dave,

Please be as detailed as possible. The details do matter. OK, both speakers are working but one VU is not working, right? How about during the different functions such as tape/radio/lin-in. Is it consistent across the board? I was under the impression that the dead VU only occurs during tape playback. Is this not the case? Also, does it move at all, even a little bit when you crank it up, or is it completely dead?

davebush - 2009-09-29 13:06

ok norm its completely dead right across the board even when its cranked up and both speakers are working ok.....................with the power off....i put a multimeter across the terminals and the needle moves..........................as far as i know the vu has never worked since ive had it which has been only a couple of weeks

I was on the right track at least! Big Grin

Glad it's sorted, those VU's are a major part of the M70's 'character' for sure Cool
