Broken GF-777 power switch repair

fatdog - 2008-06-06 11:53

My Sharp GF-777 fell victim to my wife's (I love you honey!) clumsiness shortly before Freddie's visit. I heard a big crash in the kitchen and she quickly shouted, "It's OK!" Well, I took her word for it, but gave it a quick glance the next day to see if anything had broken. What I didn't do was turn it on.

When Freddie was here, he flipped the power switch and noted it seemed loose. I tried my best to blame it on him. Big Grin However, he had just pointed out a missing switch cover and heard my story about Paula and the bang. Darn it!

Anyway, I finally got around to repairing the switch today. First off, I surveyed the damage.

The little plastic nib on the side of the power switch had cleanly broken off from the side.

I did some measuring with a micrometer and determined the nib diameter was approximately .07" or approximately 1/16". I had read Fuzzyduck's power switch repair and saw how she used a screw, but I didn't really want to use something that could perhaps strip out the plastic should the other nib ever break off. I came up with the idea of an axle/cross pin type repair. So I loaded up the drill with a 1/16" bit and carefully drilled out the necessary hole.

I found a small nail the exact diameter needed!

I had initially planned on going all the way across with the nail, but noticed that drilling the other side wouldn't leave much plastic to hold the nail, so I decided to hold off on that until if/when the other nib breaks.

I trimmed off the excess nail part with my Dremel, but left about 1/8" protruding in order to give the hot glue something to grab.

I let the hot glue cool off and cleaned up any mess and tested the switch. Perfect!

Thanks guys! Paula will be home in about 15 minutes. I think just seeing the GF-777 out of her kitchen will be worth more than a kiss and an "I love you." Laugh Out Loud Nod Yes

She sure did. I was glad to have remembered her post, which put my mind at ease regarding the repair. She used a small screw in hers; I just used a different method. Cool

Thanks, Fuzzy!

Awesome work!!!!
been there with my 777 when i had it.
are'nt those switches the most delicate piece of crap you ever seen.
Why Sharp use a little micro switch with a tiny little plastic sliver to keep in place for one of the most used switches on the whole unit is beyond me.
thankfully i was able to replace mine.
I may have kept the old switch though which has the part you have repaired
mine didnt break in the same place.

Nice work Fatdog, the screw on mine's still OK. Cool

Thanks for that post, Fatdog. Mine has a broken switch too. It's been like that since I bought it. It still works, but feels 'clicky' and loose, and when it's off you can make power go to the unit by pressing the switch down. Strange. I'll have a go at fixing mine now. The only thing that's been stopping me trying is that people are always on about how much of a ballache these 777's are to take apart. How bad are they? Anyway, how did your wife break the switch? Did she drop something out of a cupboard onto the box? ...Where do you keep the box?? Big Grin

Hey RA, to fix the power switch, all you have to do is pull the back off and remove the screws to the mic and power switch - really easy to get to.

I had the GF-777 in the kitchen awaiting surgery. It was on the floor in front of the dishwasher - totally out of the way of anybody. The wife sees it sitting there and opens the dishwasher door to get something out. CRASH! Didn't even attempt to move the GF-777 out of the way. I said the damn thing is big enough that she couldn't miss it! She said she knew it was there, but just wasn't thinking. Yeah right. Roll Eyes
