Conion power problem

fatboyrafe - 2010-02-05 13:51

so i wanted to take a look at the belt in the tape drive of the conion i just picked up. i opened it up very carefully, disconnected the wires that needed disconection, lifted the guts and checked it out. i figured i'd just close it up and forget it, i can always just play tapes in the top deck and that's fine. BUT then when i got it all closed up, now the power is not working. if you press the power button on the front, the light in the tuner dial window comes on, but the red power light won't light. did i miss a plug or mix something up or (please god no!) ruin my new box?

EDIT: i've been turning the knobs to see if anything will work, the only indication i'm getting is that the battery VU twitches slightly when i turn it past radio.

I'm not exactly a genius as far as this type of thing goes, but here is what i have discovered by playing with it (while panicking the whole time):

nothing works except the light in the tuner. NOTHING.

the twitch i saw when i clicked past radio on the function knob has stopped. i assume maybe it was hooked up to a capacitor or somethign that held a charge?

other factors that may have contributed to this occurrence:

there is 1 screw left over after sealing it back up.

The mode toggle switch outside knob was VERY difficult to get off so that i could remove the guts, had to give it a bit more of a tug than i would have liked.

the lower tape deck was engaged when i opened it. i had to kind of give it a gentle press to move the heads down so i could remove the gut unit from the case. it's still engaged. if anyone knows how to fix this one too, that'd be great.

ANYWAY hopefully this helps. in my time here, i've learned that there are geniuses lurking in these forums, and all you have to do is give them as much info as possible, and usually someone knows the fix.

how many wire's did you reconnect to the power in pcb

fatboyrafe - 2010-02-05 15:56

when i reconnected the back of the unit, there was one small green yellow maybe, and then the large red black. so two.

i think the only way to fix this sucker is to let me give you 200 bucks for it........................sometimes we just have to say goodbye

Frown sniff sniff...okay.....

PSYCHE!

ok, i picked up some d cells to test it, it's working fine off battery power. i can only assume that i forgot to plug something in on the transformer? everything is working EXCEPT the tuner light now..i'm gonna open it back up in a couple hours, i'm crossing all my fingers and toes...

fatboyrafe - 2010-02-06 13:20

could i have blown a fuse? i'm looking at the fuse..it looks fine, but then i really don't know what i'm looking for. sorry that this thread is just me talking to myself.

EDIT: Opened it again, everything seemed in place, no floating wires or anything. it's still working fine off batteries, except the tuner light won't light. Also, i guess i hadn't mentioned it yet, but when the unit is turned off, it stays on and only the tuner light would go on and off. i'm getting good at opening and closing it, and all the screws are in the right place. i don't want to keep messing around with it though and risk a stripped screw or something, so i'm only gonna open it if i know how to fix it. its so sad to have accidently neutered the box... Frown

PROBLEM SOLVED Big Grin

you're gonna laugh too. well, at least it was sufficiently complicated to actually be understandable. SOOOOOO what happened was, while i was fixing it, at first i was using the cord that was for my 5050, because it was already plugged in and my room is kinda hard to get new things plugged in, only one outlet. ANYWAY when i closed the thing up and went to test it, i was using the other plug that the seller had provided. it's not the panasonic style, it's got one square end and a channel. so just now, when i went to plug the box it just to turn off the battery power, i noticed that when i accidently jiggled it just so, the light came on AND the music came on. so it was the cord shape all along! so relieved.... Smile now if i can just figure out why the power won't go off, that'd be nice, but i'm not daring to open it up again. FOR NOWWWWWW

good news to here, we have all done silly things like that, glad to here a conion live on

jvc.floyd - 2010-02-07 08:26

the power won't turn off because the tape mech is still engaged ,the reason this happens is because with a tape in it you can press play with the power off and the tape will play ,so if you cannot dis engage the tape deck the power stays on ,sounds like it needs the belts replaced and the flywheels turned to dis engage the tape drive.

ah! well good to know... don't know how far off i am from being willing to do that. but it would be nice to have it fully functional.
