JVC PC-55 Speaker Repair and Mod

leestereo - 2008-03-31 11:12

First of all, a big thanks to JVC Floyd who provided the replacement tweeter, without which this repair would not have been possible.

This is a follow up to my earlier post, which can be found here: http://stereo2go.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6576054064/m/82...251010925#8251010925

I opened up the speaker box and replaced the tweeter and since I had the box open, I fixed sound leakage around the bass port (similar to the post about PC550 speakers (see http://stereo2go.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8596027254/m/52...61059003#5261059003).

Here are some pictures:

I started with a thick piece of black weather stripping for the top of the port hole and used thinner gray weather stripping elsewhere. [/IMG]

This a picture of the finished mod.

I also added a small piece of polyester fiber fill, about 6" x 5" x 1" to the inside, just behind the woofer.

Does the modified speaker sound better? Yes! A quick comparison with the un-modified speaker revealed that the bass is better, louder and less sloppy. This is due to the bass reflex port working as it should instead of being a just a hole by which the woofer backwave leaks out. The simplified theory is that port is tuned to a specific frequency and should allow only sounds at that frequency and below to leave the box and reinforce the front bass output. If there is substantial leakage (as in the stock speaker), then the bass response is not enhanced.
The added fiberfill mostly absorbs the midrange and higher frequencies and dampens the box resonance to give cleaner mids and highs. The upper treble with some recordings was sometimes harsh (e.g. exaggerated sibilants), but that is now gone.

A worthwhile modification that to complete would take less time than was used to read this post!

Nice! I have a PC-55 coming in that I will have to do that to. Thanks for the pictures!
