Repairing Dry Surrounds

alow1 - 2008-03-20 22:31

I have a pair of speakers and the surrounds on them are dried out. They are not broken or anything like that, matter of fact they still look almost new. But the rubber is pretty stiff, I wont even think about giving them any power as I would be afraid they would crack.

So my question is, is their anything I can put on the rubber surrounds to help make them pliable?

I figured if anybody knew, this would be the place to find that person.

I dont want to change the surrounds on them if I dont have to.

Seems like some sort of of rubber solution that you could paint on to the surrounds and would then protect them while still being able to move would be perfect. I remember using something similar while at college to make molds. Liquid latex if I remember rightly. You can paint it on in layers and as each layer drys, it remains flexible. Now, whether it would adhere sufficiently to the surround is a different matter.

Anyway, hope this helps!

just get them replaced , if you think they are gonna go , chances are they will . .

several boomboxes need new surrounds . .

just type speaker re foam or speaker refoam into google , plenty of places offer re-foaming services , replacing the speaker surrounds. Smile

I agree with Agent,it's not to difficult. Lot of people can do it for you, if you feel uncomfortable to tackle it "like I do". I Agree I'm having my Aiwa CS880 woofers refoamed by JvcFloyd. Big Grin
