my speaker repair

hi all, just thought i would put this here for the benefit of others, basicaly the woofer just blew on my hitachi 3d5 so i took it out to see if it was just the dust cap rattling but no the coils were burnt up anyway i recently replaced my car door speakers for new ones as the rubber had gone on them but the coils were good, so i thought i would attempt to remove the dustcap and then the coil from the cone and transplant it into my woofer, and to cut a long story short it worked great sounds as good as it used to.

i got lucky though the wattage and ohms were the same and it was a 3 way door speaker so the woofer part was the same type of coil ie not full range, i used super glue to attach the coil to the cone but you have to play around a bit to get it so theres no friction between the coil and magnet centre (the coil part was exactly the same size as the old one) then i passed the new brush wire through the cone and super glued them in place, then solder the wire to them from the coil (very delicate getting them out withought breakage) and then solder the brush wire to the tabs, use glue to fasten the joint through the cone so it doesnt rattle, then glue the dust cap back on!

hope this helps you if you have a blown speaker and cant get one the right shape etc its fiddly but it can be done.

hi geoff, good to hear from you, would love to post some pics but its done snd im kinda hoping not to blow any more, its scary the thought of trying to replace a speaker on something that hasnt been made in 20 years, and i know a cheap woofer just wouldnt do it justice.

suppose its my fault though i was pushing it a bit but it sounds so darn good loud!

hows your collection going, i am still hunting for a gf777 in the wild or at a fair price if you know of any, loads on ebay but too much for me and most are in china.

maybe you can help me with some models because i want some of the real big ones with the 8" woofers or bigger but dont know what any of them are called or where to look for one
