Dead belts?

So I was recording a tape on the deck of my newly acquired SCR-8 and everything was fine until I noticed the tape was not turning. So I pressed the stop button to find it really didn't respond but eventually I managed to get it out of record mode.

The next problem was that the deck would refuse to give up the tape. Eventually I managed to wrangle it out but now neither play/FF or REW causes the drive heads to turn. Additionally when FF or REW is depressed depressing the stop button does not kick it out of this mode. I can hear the motor turning in the backround so I think that the belts finally decided to turn to goo. The deck already had a bad case of flutter so I think the recording caused it to give up the ghost. Thoughts?

Could be belts, idler tires, capstan tire, or any combination of things. It's time to open it up and dive in. Nod Yes

No way to tell for sure until you take it apart.
If the belt is broken make sure you keep it and get a measurement. You can order a new belt here:
