GF-990G Cassette Problem

ghettoboom777 - 2009-02-13 20:37

Hi everyone-I have a rare one-The Sharp GF990 G with the synthesiser,That works great but the cassette's don't work right.
The tape 1 will start playing but the right spool doesn't take-up tape.No FF or Rew.
Tape 2 started working but quit altogether.
I knew it was lacking cassette operation but everything else is great!
I love this thing-the clarity is very, very good!
5 band eqaualizer and what not.
Has anyone had one of these??
It's most likely a belt isssue.
How hard is it to do the belts before I get into it??
I appreciate any help on this rare gem!
Thanks-GB. Smile

Hi everyone-Well I dug into it today and after 2 hours-It's tedious but not to hard.
I replaced both belts that were bad on this unit.
Tape 1 works excellent!!
Tape 2 works but is really slow-I'm going back into it because I had an extra screw for the back of the cassette assembly unit that I didn't get in there.
I'm hoping with some lube and some straightening or alignment it will be o.k.
Otherwise I'm going to get a real belt kit and replace all of the belts.
I'm impressed that with patience things work out.
Right now 1 out of 2 isn't bad especially with these used Aiwa belts that work fine BUT the second deck might not like that it's al ittle shorter than the stock one.
I'm going into the second deck again to resolve this problem if I can.
I'm psyched!
Have a great one-GB. Smile Nod Yes

Glad you seem to have a handle on it. Always exciting and scary tearing into an unknown box.

Don't have this so can't help much, but sure you will get it going right.

Hurray-It's done-surgery is a success!!
I had one of the belts on the wrong pulley groove.
After tearing into tape 2 again I found this and I also found that patience and diligence paid off.
My gourd this stereo almost cost as much as the JVC-PC55!! 599.00 new.
This is over a 1,000 boombox in todays prices or about a 1,000.
This is why I really took my time and was impressed with Sharp's ingenuity on this type of deck.
It's like an assemled unit that comes out and by taking the back off you have access to all belts and pulleys.
I just love Sharps!!
I'm happy now Big Grin Nod Yes and so is my GF-909G it's now 100% operational!
I think I'll have a drink-have a great week-GB. Smile
