Pics: drum pad Kaboom in bits - CD problem...

isolator42 - 2008-08-27 10:18

A freind of ours had some trouble with thier JVC RV-DP200 & gave it to me to try & save it. This is the biggest of the Kaboom series with drum pads, scratch wheel, rhythm selections, & all sorts. It's truly barking:

Theirs has had a tough life & has many scars to prove it. The AC in jack was broken & trying to use DC in had fried their underpowered AC/DC adaptor (no surprise).

Unfortunately for me, the AC in board is mounted on the back panel from the inside so I had to completely disassemble the b-box.
Damn, I've never seen so many screws. Cracking open the case involves removing both end woofers & both the left & right top panels.

For those interested in the guts of a Kaboom, I took some pics.

Pics of the drive units:

Coke can in there for scale. Look how small the full range drive unit is.
Not a tweeter in sight.
The woofers have butyl-rubber surrounds ... heavyweight.

Look at those voice-coils & magnets. Meaty stuff.

Full range rated at 10W & the woofers 20W.

Round the back, here's the amp board & heatsink, and the bass port assembly:

Now THAT'S a heatsink.
The woofers each have their own enclosures with this long tuned bass port. The full range drive-units have their own sealed enclosures too.

All those screws make the b-box very rigid.

Anyway, I fixed the AC in, but the CD won't read a disc. It spins up, but no TOC info appears. After a while it displays "0" tracks.

Any ideas? Smile

I love that polar bear table cloth! Cool

the only things i can sugest is to first breath on the lens and then clean with a cotton bud, also if your lucky there should be some lens ajusting pots so that you can turn up the gain of the lens but if you find the pots this takes time and trial and error, also its very awkward given you need the kaboom assembled to oparate, good luck paul.

Cheers Tim, I'll give it a go.

The oh-so classy tablecloth is an attempt to save the table from the sustained onslaught of food, paint, glue, etc. from my kids. Fat chance... Smile

Thanks for posting the pics, isolator! It sure looks better without the cheezy flame stickers on it!

I have the RV-DP100, also with the drum pad. Unfortunately, mine has a broken cassette player.

I don't know if the guts are the same, but if you happen to still have it apart, can you maybe be so kind as to post a pic of the exposed tape deck section?

I'm very curious to see what it looks like. I have been wondering how much effort it would be to get in there to attempt fixing it...

Best of luck with your project!

Pretty sure that the deck mechs for all the full-size Kabooms was the same. I found this pic of one:

I'd say fixing it would be less than fun.

Unfortunately the one I currently have custody of does have the cheesy flame stickers. It'd still be damn ugly without them though.

Thanks isolator... redbenjoe alerted me to where I could find a service manual and I picked it up for $14.

Its on its way....

Let me know if I should post or email you copies of pages...

Best of luck with your project!

ooh, that would be aces!
I'm trying to fix the CD, so any info in that area would be great.
If you have it as a PDF the email would be favourite

...& onto PM we go Smile

btw, if you've never taken one of these apart, be prepared for LOTS of screws...
