TRK-8200 bass knob stopped working!

retro.addict - 2008-07-28 09:54

It didn't work when I tried it last night. It doesn't matter which way I turn the knob, it doesn't make any difference to the sound either from the woofers or headphones. I've sprayed contact cleaner in the pot and exercised it, with no results... HELP! Eek Big Grin

Frown Frown Frown Boomboxes are certainly made to last, but I guess they can't live forever. I'm really sad right now. I'll have another mess with it later and maybe take it apart. Wish me luck Rimmer! Big Grin

This may or may not be the case, but I read somewhere that spraying TOO MUCH contact spray, or contact spray which may be a little more powerful can actually STRIP the copper conductor film off of pots and switches, thus rendering them useless.

I got my Conion which sounded bad, so I sprayed contact spray into the volume, balance, bass and treble knobs/pots, and for a good 10 to 20 seconds it sounded amazing, and then nothing. I mean, I couldnt control any of those specific controls. The volume is always on high, high treble, low bass. It doesnt matter what I do, there is no difference when turning anything.

Bummer.

Bummer indeed. Sorry to hear that, beatbox. Frown

That sounds a desperately frustrating, disheartening thing to happen with such a monster of a box, to have all that power and sound potential there, and you can't use it! Frown Eek

I tried it again last night, and it's definately had it. I think the bass is stuck at half way. This box isn't a bass monster at the best of times, now it's worse! I've recieved a PM from a fellow member saying he will sell me one of his two fully working TRK-8200's. The deck has never worked in mine while I've had it, so having one with a working deck would be really nice! I'm pondering the idea... Smile

well it may need the pot replaced,if you get that used one you may be better off--making 2 radios to one good one--

Sounds like a plan ramon, especially if mine is in better visual condition than his. I could then swap the insides over.

My 8200 volume pot quit working, and I got an almost exact replacement at allelectronics.com. The bass pot looks like it could take CAT# LPF-50K, though I'm not sure if it is 50K or not. They are really cheap, and worth a shot if you can do some solder surgery! Smile

If you do open up the boombox, find the pot in question, it will probably have 3 prongs where it connects to the curcuit board, if you take a flat head screwdriver and short two of these together( you will have to experiment with combination) and full bass returns, you will have to replace the potentiometer. If the bass will not increase, the problem will be in the bass preamp curcuit. Hope this helps.
