ac cable

geoffhartwell - 2009-02-15 11:19

forgive me for being dum, but i have an ac cable from the usa and all i wanted to do is put a uk plug on it, so i cut of the us plug and the wires are not colour coded. obviously one goes to the live and one goes to the neutral, does it matter what way round they go as the end that goes into the bbox can go either way

It doesn't really matter. The plugs you have in the UK only go in one way in the wall socket
Just check if the voltage selector is correct Wink

geoff --instead of cutting off the wall socket plug --why not buy a plug adaptor ?
they cost only 2 bucks (over here)

Yes why? Confused

In europe the adaptor cost about 2-3 euros.

I'll go ahead and assume that Geoff doesn't want the hassle of using an adaptor each time he plugs in the boombox.

Either one in live or neutral Geoff. (I think)

you got it ben, dont want the hassel messing with adaptors, sorted it now, it dont matter what way round the live and neutral go, thanks anyway guys

Since it uses a tranformer, the boombox is isolated from the AC outlet. No matter the way. you put the wires in the plug.
In addition, note that the AC socket in the boombox allows you to plug the cable in two different ways, so you don't know actually if the live and the neutral are swaped at the boombox socket or not.
In Argentina the outlets had only two equal holes, so the device can be pluged in two ways, and swaping live with neutral was possible.
This was avoided ten years ago.

I've done exactly this with the lead for my M90.

I agree with the others... one wire where the blue wire would normally go (NEUTRAL), & the other where the brown wire would normally go (LIVE), via the fuse in the plug.
Don't connect either to the EARTH pin (the longer one at the top)
