Need a penatrative lubricant

sega - 2011-09-15 08:36

Re-belted the crown and I still cant unseize the playback wheel, I cant get to it that well with anything I have so I need to use a spray that can get in everwhere as its stuck tighter than a (insert inappropiate referance).

Im in the UK so I need something avalible here.

radio.raheem - 2011-09-15 08:54

Me and litfan could do with some too lol

what do you mean stuck (EXACTLY) all i can sugest is take all the belts off give it a spray with wd40...if then clean all the gunk off..could take a few hours...then rebelt it...

sega - 2011-09-15 09:02

I was waiting for somone to pull that joke lol

I did think about WD40 before but James told me it was a bad idea to use it as it could do damage, Im confused.

By stuck I mean its really really stiff to turn, I have to put way more force than should be nessacery through my fingers to turn it.

radio.raheem - 2011-09-15 09:08

I agree you shouldn't use wd40...but i think in this case you have no choice...unless sombody else can sugest anything..

I have NOT worked on any Crowns - therefore i dont know?

I only have 3 crowns a 640, 950, 850... never opened any of them.

Is this a gear driven wheel? held inplace by another gear? therefore hard to turn?

You may have to dis -assemble this a bit further carefully to be sure?  is this rusted?

a close picture might help

some of cassette deck's have multiple layer's of gear's an such and maybe hard to understand their movement Like some Sanyo cassette decks

sega - 2011-09-15 09:54

I dont think its multiple gears but there a few in there, it does appear to be driven by belts opposed to gears though, Its only a rough guess that Ive set it up right as Ive got no manual and or photos of a good one.

Theres no evidence of rusting from what I could see, the gears are plastic and the spindles look like they are made of a non rusting metal.

Ill try for a photo in a bit how well it will show the parts I dont know.

radio.raheem - 2011-09-15 10:09

Sega if my 850 was the same id look...mine is different from yours tho lad

radio.raheem - 2011-09-15 10:15

Sega...im stupid...does it spin freely with no belt on...if it does..it probbly means the belt is to small

walkgirl - 2011-09-15 10:19

VIM

sega - 2011-09-15 10:27

With or without belt it does not spin freely, the belt feels just right from experiance.

Ive taken a few snaps the best I could, if the plastic wasnt so soft Id grab a pair or pliers and turn it to see where it feels more stiff.

A friend suggested multi-purpose oil might do it but is that safe to use?

sega - 2011-09-15 10:36

Heres the photos

radio.raheem - 2011-09-15 10:43

Those are bloody good shots sega....give me an hour  .... im hoping my crown is the same deck....ill look for you....if i brake it im not bothered it's in a state anyway....i need some practice for my new 970...if i screw that up i'll jump off a cliff.. im just not convinced those belts are on correctly...

sega - 2011-09-15 10:55

I know it looks wierd but its the only way they all line up right, whilst its not apparent in the photos or when you look at it dead on, the wheels are steped in height, and the big grey one is weighted which appears to control speed and is the only one with the space to join multiple belts.

radio.raheem - 2011-09-15 11:03

My deck is different lad...but baically the same in reverse,,,,im guessing,,,but i think your belts are on correctly.....all i can sugest is put a tape in and press play...see what happens

sega - 2011-09-15 11:12

Ive done it without tape so theres no load and it just sticks and doesnt move. As soon as I can get it moving Ill try the adapter as it will behave like a tape without the precious tape to damage, if alls fine motion wise Ill then try one of my 'fodder' tapes that Ive got for testing.

radio.raheem - 2011-09-15 11:14

haha cannon fodder..remember that

walkgirl - 2011-09-15 11:40

Tim showers with VIM

radio.raheem - 2011-09-15 11:43

Yup las bit of vim on the old parts...that will wake you up

sega - 2011-09-15 12:03

pardon my ignorance but what is VIM?

As to things put on the 'old parts' in the shower, I made the mistake of using a lynx shock one that had menthol in it and was a glittery blue, that certainly was a shocking sensation

Try it james...it's pretty pleasurable if you like pain

radio.raheem - 2011-09-15 18:26

I've just thought of a great  name for a film

Attack of the giant 50 foot pulsating clitorax lol

sega - 2011-09-16 06:17

Now now behave yourself

That lynx gel is evil, its not so much a shock as a burning sensation.

Vim isnt avalible here, Im guessing its a cleaning product not unlike our Jif, which is something my skin reacts quite badly to.

Im going to try and find an old fine modelling brush and try and paint some lithium grease in and I cant do like I did with my Matchbox motorway and just keep packing it in until the cars were moving smoothly (it works a little like a scalectrix except insted of using purpose made motored cars it used 2 motors hidden in track side buildings that turn gears that drove springs through grooves in the track that the pins that you attach to your regular toy cars will grip on to).

plop - 2011-09-16 07:18

Vim is still available. Here :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spotle...Powder/dp/B001EJ3QSO

These days Jif is now rebranded Cif.

sega - 2011-09-16 07:46

Ah didnt know about being able to order it online, will still try the grease first though.

I refuse to call it Cif, still not seen much point in calling opal fruits starburst either, I dont mind calling Snickers by the name of Snickers though as it stopped being called Marathon for quite a while before I was born.

sega - 2011-09-16 12:06

Went B&Q as some g1t pinched my tube of grease, got a spray and now its moving but

the !£"$%&* main belt is too slack to drive it all, it must have streched but not bad enough to stop it working with minamal load.

I dont know why I bothered to get up today

radio.raheem - 2011-09-16 18:20

Im not looking forward to doing my crown 970....it says in one of your posts that in rewind the cog is turning the wrong way....this means with 100 percent cirtanty at least one of the belts is on wrong...i hate to be the one to point it out....if it was me the box would have long gone in the bin..at this point....still a good learning cerve...im suprized beanieman hasnt worked this out for you....as he is good at changing most belts...

sega - 2011-09-17 03:54

Would it be worth PMing him?

radio.raheem - 2011-09-17 08:46

Nothing ventured..nothing gained
