Replacement 16cm Drive Units

Hi

I bought a couple of these VW Golf/Polo Isophon speakers off ebay to try out as replacements to the original Sharp units in my GF-525, they are only 5.5cm deep which desirable for the 525.

With a bit cutting and reshapping of the surround (they are made out of

ABS plastic and very easy to cut and file) and the plastic housing around the mains transformer i got them to fit, i wired them up with 42 strand cable, and i have to say they are much better than the originals, they are about the same sensitivity but much better at handling bass, and having modded the power supply on the Sharp to a 4 amp transformer you can wind it up without the sound falling apart. I also removed the joke tweeters and enlarged the mouth of the horn so i could fit and use the ear pieces from my mobile phone headset, i fitted these with 4.7uf BP caps so they only get treble fed into them.

The whole sound qaulity has been lifted into a far more refined but powerful league

The best bit is there are a lot of these drivers on ebay and they are cheap

I have also fitted another pair to my GF-575 with the same results (this has had all the same upgrades as the 525 and been totally restored), though i have sprayed the cones red and fitted the chrome centre caps from an old pair of speakers to smarten them up

I thought this information might be useful for people looking for replacement drivers

Ps I have uploaded a fot of the 575 iys not very good though
