conion c100 popping sound

fatboyrafe - 2012-08-27 21:03

I have a conion that recently developed an issue where even if it has no input and is set to aux, it randomly has a loud pop. This pop appears over radio, phono, and tape playing. Any idea where to begin looking to repair? I tried going through and changing all knobs, especially the mono/stereo/wide, which often holds some kind of excess charge and pops when I change to stereo. I also completely powered off for several days and it was fine for the first bit when I powered on but the random popping came back shortly.

Try powering up with battery's. See if popping still occurs.

maybe its something else but have you tried cleaning on the knobs and that aux area with some good contact cleaner?....but that pop your talking about with the mono/stereo/wide conions always did that ive owned several...two in the 80s....

I'll try the batteries, see what happens. The popping really only started recently, there is also static on the aux and cassette channels even without input. I'll also grab some spray and try that, I didn't think about it being a possibility because in the past when those pots getdirty it had very different symptoms. Thanks for the ideas though.

OH NO I have found the cause of my problem but not the solution. I turned the boombox off for 48 hours or so, then came back and cleaned all the pots with generic deoxit spray. it sounded great for the first ten minutes UNTIL I RECIEVED A TEXT MESSAGE ON MY PHONE. Immediately, it began chirping and popping, and now there is static again on the stereo. Then I realized the popping really only started in the past few months, and i have only had my new phone for about the same period of time. It looks like my conion and my galaxy nexus just don't get along, but I don't have a solution. i'll just leave it off again and clean the pots, but no long term solution found

the solution suggests itself: get rid of the phone.

My cell phone will cause a few pop noises on most of my radios whenever it 'talks' to the cell site.  It only happens when the phone is within a few feet of the radios.  Try locating your boombox farther away from your phone, or maybe set the phone farther away from the radio when listening to it.

turn off the phone haha.....all mobiles do this....you don't need to do anything else to the conion
