I need some m90 deck assistance please help

radio.raheem - 2013-03-05 00:59

Ok basically i cant get the deck to play...play will not engage..she just clunks...she does rew ff normally (most times)

another strange thing is that if i take the tape out of the deck....she just clunks over and over (will not stop) It's not the belts

when i first had her the capstan spun round regardless of weather there was a tape inserted or not..(unheard of for  an m90

please help im not sure what's going on....i have a feeling somebody has been inside her as the belts seem pretty new... over to you guys....any help is well appreciated as an m90 to me is useless without the deck

cman750 - 2013-03-05 01:11

I had the same issue with my RC M60 , once the power cord  was removed from the box the problem was resolved , hope this helps out .

radio.raheem - 2013-03-05 01:25

I wish it was that easy my friend...im just praying it's not a broken gear or something like that....what's worse is i have broken my glasses and feel real shady about working on the deck...thanks for your quick reply though...the m90 ain't a bad radio to have....i just want the deck haha

cman750 - 2013-03-05 01:39

I understand , having time on my hands recently , opportunity using all my JVC and hands down the RC M 90 has the sound ..highs and lows ...the deck is special .

radio.raheem - 2013-03-05 01:46

Thanks mate.....im fed up with the same 10 songs on the radio over and over...never use the radio normally...but in this case i have no choice

radio.raheem - 2013-03-06 09:53

Is there a servo motor that operates'that mech ,voltage prob maybe? Ill ask my tech guy tomorrow, we had similar prob. with mine.

radio.raheem - 2013-03-06 10:04

there are 2 motors one for rew ff and the other drives the main capstan.....i have fixed plenty of these but this one has me baffled....but im no tech expert to be honest..

i just want her working intime for the summer...

if somebody can fix her i'll pay or see what boomboxes i have

and any help would be superb my friend.....i don't want to end up selling her because she can't be fixed...

when i first had her a few days ago she was in a state....she now ranks as a nice clean unit....not perfect but i have had much worse...

is there something that kicks the head into motion..there may be....i can't think what it's called (memory failing) but any help would be super mate

brutus442 - 2013-03-06 13:29

its a solenoid Reno Is the solenoid engaged or are the heads in the up position?

Thank you geoff.....is the play powered by a solenoid son and do you know where it is on the deck???? my heads are in the down position my friend

radio.raheem - 2013-03-06 18:13

ok im not sure but i don't think its the solenoid....as it moves freely by hand but i cant tell....so it looks like a broken gear....as it just keeps clunking none stop without a cassette in...polloks

Reno can you absolutely confirm the belts are OK and NOT slipping?

This happened to mine and caused the capstan to run regardless if the unit was on tape or radio.

DON'T run it this way to long as it will kill the resistors really quick.

If it's not that...do all the gears have all their teeth? If one's missing it's likely to cause that clunking sound.

question geoff....did your capstan run even when not in play mode or rew ff....in other words was your capstan running when the unit was on but doing nothing with no tape in

and where were the heads....in the up or down position

brutus442 - 2013-03-07 11:09

yes it was running..the only solution was to unplug it. Upon startup it it runs a quick test and I believe the solenoid engages and then disengages if it's not asked to run. More to do with the logic controls.

The heads were in the up position but I didn't try to reset them without rebelting first. Even after that I had to reset the gear and solenoid by just winding the gear back a bit.

Hope this helps Reno.....I know having the M90 ill is a terrible feeling...

We'll get her sorted out my friend!

radio.raheem - 2013-03-07 12:05

Thats just it geoff your heads were in the up position.....when the heads are down nothing is meant to work....so this confirms my belts are ok... the clunking im referring to is the normal clunking the m90 does....just mine won't stop....im now sure the gears are cream crackered my friend...i had one like this before...and even ghettoman couldnt work it out....so the deck was scrapped....

You have to push the relay plunger/lever toward the relay, then rotate the big cam gear toward the head assy intill you hear it click in place, to align it. If not could be cracked plastic lever, or something didn't line up correctly.

docs - 2013-03-07 13:03

Looking at the block diagram for the M90 I would start by checking voltages at IC701. The capstan driver (Q709) are transistors and should be checked for voltages too. Start there and see what the readings are.

Sorry, I thought you were okay with a multimeter.
