my quick review of the tdk 3 speaker boombox (warning DON'T BUY second hand RUBISH of the bay) if you plan to use usb...Boombox is now DEAD due to failed firmware update....BOOMBOX NOW FIXED READ HOW AT BOTTOM OF THREAD

radio.raheem - 2013-03-18 05:16

Well she is here smile....review based on radio section only (the plonker didn't supply any leads)

first impression is how warm the sound is....it has an old fashioned sound

almost valve amp quality sound....warmer than an m90 for example...

she is quite loud...not the loudest though(i would have liked more volume personally)..but goes flat out full bass treble with very little distortion

here is the disappointment for me...not enough treble clarity imho...sounds like a normal kaboom compared to the dp200....

i should think the treble will improve vastly when using a good walkman etc through her as you will have the added treble of the walkman and bass which i think will then make the bass insane lol... the treble of the radio is just not enough though....kinda like an 880 pc55 etc

the weight probably about the same as a pc55 so (heavy)...

im not sure how tdk can class this as a boombox though with no cd tape etc....i would class her as a portable amp...something like that..

am i happy sort of paid 250 would have been disappointed. if i had paid full price at launch....mainly down to the fact it has no cassette deck or cd.....but this boombox sounds so much better than 80 percent of the radios out there...and im glad it dosent have an ipod dock stuck on there haha...well there you have it...i recommend you get one....especially if your not into tapes or ipods lol

Thanks lee...if you can get one for 200 or under i say bargain...this has bass kinda like the kaboom dt680....i just thought she would have been louder due to the fact of taking 12 d's  but still loud... not sure why they went with 12 d's  but it has  superb sound considering it's so thin...deffo not boxy atall.....very few boxes can achieve that....be it 3 peice or 1

isolator42 - 2013-03-18 08:27

If only TDK had added some sort of protection for the drivers, I'd be sold...

blaster - 2013-03-18 09:00

i think they were suppose to have covers for the drivers in their original design....as shown in this exploded  view......but i love the way it looks...cant get enough of looking at mine...and..i kept the plastic on it...

TDK_Image_boombox_components_LB

isolator42 - 2013-03-18 09:15

Don't get me wrong it looks lovely like that. However, I'd want to use it outside every now & then, bung it in the back of the car, etc. No driver protection at all means this is risky at best.

Can anyone else thing of any boombox that had zero protection for the drivers other than these TDKs?

radio.raheem - 2013-03-18 11:18

You're kidding, right?

blaster - 2013-03-18 13:01

raheem, it supports mp3/wma....up to 32gb stick is the max as per the instructions....try to push it all the way in with care perhaps its not in proper contact...but don't jam it in of course, it should be able to read it...

SO, you can simply put mp3s on a memory stick then plug it in the back and they will play?  If so then ignore my above post.

here is a PDF of the users manual in case you don't have one...

blaster - 2013-03-18 13:14

i recommend using one of these short ones the....SanDisk 32GB Cruzer Fit USB... its what i use on mine.....because it prevents damage to the stick from bumping or hitting the long ones when moving the radio from place to place....plus it keeps it nice and stealthy...

smeats1976 - 2013-03-18 13:14

seen a review that highlighted this problem and bloke said............

Short version: Beautifully styled, modern, and very loud, but USB issues take this from a cool and functional device to a questionable one. (Update: TDK released a firmware update the day after this review published which fixes the USB issues. I installed it myself and it works perfectly; devices will ship with updated firmware starting now, and owners should be able to download the update at TDK’s site soon. The review has been updated where relevant, but the portions relating to the issue left in for the record.

don't know much about software but I hope this helps

FILE - TDKBoomboxFirmwareUpgradeInstructions01-04-2012.pdf

raheem,..did you follow how it says in the download instructions?

if not i attached it below....

radio.raheem - 2013-03-18 20:36

It says i must format my drive in fat 32.....computer wont let me format in fat 32......is windows 7 to modern

isolator42 - 2013-03-19 00:42

The USB has to be 32GB or less for the TDK box & also for FAT32.

So long as you're using a USB stick 32GB or smaller, this should help:

http://geekdrop.com/content/ho...-vista-or-in-general

radio.raheem - 2013-03-19 00:51

wish i had red youp post before paul had a 64 gig......anyway thats thee end of that lad.....im in tears.....i have a brick

walkgirl - 2013-03-19 00:54

Use aesus partition master!!

Is for free and handy

radio.raheem - 2013-03-19 01:00

tried flashing it nicole screen went blank as stated but did not come back o its now no more ie a brick.....guess its fucked now can hardly see the screen

isolator42 - 2013-03-19 01:11

Assuming there's nothing wrong with your computer or your connections (internet & to the TDK), you will be able to restore factory settings & go from there.

Patience my friend, patience.

...& possibly some sleep?

radio.raheem - 2013-03-19 01:17

can you tell me how my friend.....the tdk does nothing now....had plenty of sleep.....been told if this happens to a pc...its bin worthy.....so what do i do now bro

isolator42 - 2013-03-19 01:23

so difficult to know without being there.

first make 100% sure you have a FAT32 formatted USB stick which is smaller than 32GB, with the firmware upgrade file on it.

Very carefully follow the instructions in the file TDKBoomboxFirmwareUpgradeInstructions01-04-2012.pdf

Especially the section "Failed Upgrade Recovery Procedure".

...good luck

Otherwise, have you tried TDK support?

http://www.tdkperformance.com/...rt/Contact-Support1/

radio.raheem - 2013-03-19 02:12

im not sure how i can repeat from step 9 paul lad....as the boombox dosent power up it's dead

bit late now son but thats what i originally thought....now im left with a brick due to a partial scam on ebay....the seller said nothing about faulty usb......im not sure what do do now chris.....i could lie to the seller and state the boombox arrived  dead....but that's not my style my friend never has been....so now i REALLY don't know what to do as now the boombox is dead....due to a failed update....tdk say to repeat the process but you need to get into the advanced boombox menu to do this....so that's me up the creak without a paddle as usual

isolator42 - 2013-03-19 06:06

It's surely most likely that the TDK can be restored, at least as far as to find out whether the USB works properly.

Try the TDK support...

Can be fix, you just have to figure out how to get it to recovery mode, so it can re update. As far as formatting to FAT 32, I have "VMWARE" install, to use with multiple OS's, so  not a issue, but you can also use a 3rd party partition tool.

radio.raheem - 2013-03-20 08:05

you press one of the buttons while turning it on....that's what its supposed to do.....mine does jack sh==......hope your keeping well retrodos....and not working to hard

Good to know  that there may be issue's with playing digital music from within this TDK-3 speaker boombox.

Above here's a possible reason why, "Not to get this boombox", if you must play music via the usb input.

Have never heard of the Lasonic's i931's needing a firmware update - maybe those that have the latest TDK boombox may wish to Rollback to the lasonic digital usb or secure digital flash capable boombox

At least there wasn't any issue's with lasonic playing from a usb stick ( not that I would know - as I - only have "1" mp3's music and wave files on "1" CD I made )  and that's requiring a cd player - that's as far as I got into digital music.  No usb music for me

Only bought the Lasonic 1931 as it has a 3.5mm or 1/8th inch stereo input to allow Walkman's played through it

Cassette's while archaic - still play terrific

people may think im daft....but im used to flashing a pc......i think it's disgusting you need to flash a £300  boombox TDK should have a warning on there sight that a failed update could result in a dead boombox....as this is common knowledge regarding a pc....

cassette all the way bro.....trouble is what do i do with the boombox....i may as-well put it out for the garbage men

Sorry to hear about this problem Reno...stick with this as a side project..don't allow yourself to be bummed out. There MUST be a fix for this. I'm sure you're not the only one this has hapened to.

Keep posting your progress Reno....and good luck!!!!

Whatever you do don't bin it.

I'm sure it can be restored somehow.

Am I the only one slightly concerned with whatever 'flashing' is here? Was it prt of the restore process - it sounds a bit dangerous...

it is dangerous considering i have a dead boombox.....done it lots of times paul...alot of electrical things these days it needs doing to....tv's dvd players computers,,,,you name it.....i think as i have stated its outrageous,,,,,the world we live in is bollocks now.....the pc gaming industry is just as bad....these days you buy a game and half the time it doesn't even work until they relice updates for the game

I Own and fix quite a few of those TDK 2/3 they are known to have PSU issues and USB port fails offen, plus poorly written frimware. Then the fact that you don't have No Rechargeable Batteries No SD Card Slot No Bluetooth for it price point. When with a Pioneer/audiovox sxabb2 speaker dock due to have a Sirus/XM satellite tuner to dock and has line input, No radio but don't really listen to AM/FM, as no good stations around here. Does sound decent and gets the job done, use it almost daily, plus can use C batteries.

Altec Lansing, JVC, Bose make some decent docks. Like anything most stuff is a hit or miss, rush out the door instead of testing.

So this begs the question Retrodos.....how do i fix this pos.....i can't afford to send it to you as i don't have any money at the moment...and it would cost more than the boombox is worth to send it to you.....can i buy a bios chip for exsample....what can i do...is there a reset switch inside the boombox

With USB stick in hold down the OK button while powering it up, even if you can't get into diagnostic mode, will take a few minutes. After finish make sure volume control to the OFF position then pull power and USB stick. Then plug back in and display sure come back on. USB stick does have to be formatted in FAT32, or won't get frimware off stick. These have a failsafe, so they won't be bricked.
