Get more from TDK Speaker boombox?

ianisag - 2013-04-26 09:54

I have the TDK 3 Speaker boombox and I am curious to know if I can get more volume out of this thing. I had it maxed out last night while playing kickball and you could barely hear anything over the team yelling and singing to it All my mp3s are good/great quality and the iPod was maxed out on volume as well. Is there a software hack/patch or anything I can do to this thing?!?!

I have a LaSonic 931x that is on it's last legs and it does circles around my TDK.

Thanks in advance guys!

a chap called reno will be along shortly to help you on this

ianisag - 2013-04-26 10:00

awesome! I bought this thing based on reviews of the power of it, my lasonic is 10 lbs lighter and it's way louder at half the volume!

I await Reno's help anxiously!

samovar - 2013-04-26 10:03

if i am right radio raheem has the same box; maybe he can help you. btw, there's no such thing as good/great quality mp3s --they're all crap

ianisag - 2013-04-26 10:08

Well there is chitty quality and  a lil better than chitty quality then. haha!

radio.raheem - 2013-04-26 13:35

hi there first off what firmware do you have on the tdk....to find out turn off box.....hold ok turn on it will come up with version on the menu....tell me what version you have.....do not select upgrade at this point....just select version let me know then turn off boombox....the current version is 237.......

i do agree though this box isn't as loud as it should be......how loud is your's on the radio????

ianisag - 2013-04-26 13:47

I'll check when I get home good sir! Thanks for the info.

I never use the radio...just usb or auxiliary

spaceboy - 2013-04-26 14:36

Sorry to highjack thread, Radio Raheem ive got a tdk 3 speaker boombox version 2,3,7 , 2011-09-26 America.

can the firmware be upgraded?

thanks

man

radio.raheem - 2013-04-26 18:02

Hi guys that's the same firmware i have....im not sure but i think the firmware mainly dealt with updating the usb issues....i would feel uncomfortable telling anybody to flash there tdk boombox after the issues i had flashing mine.... but i think the firmware you have spaceboy is the latest one

ianisag - 2013-04-26 18:15

I have firmware 2.3.3 so I'll follow the update I found on your thread.

I have a feeling this won't make it any louder though...any ideas for that or am I stuck with it the way it is?

radio.raheem - 2013-04-26 18:22

apparently it makes the usb audio slightly better quality and fixes some freezing issues.....im quite suprized though that you say a lasonic is louder Ian as lasonic are known not to be that loud,,,,,my pair are not to far behind my m90......please try yours on the radio Ian and let me know if it's any louder...thanks mate

ianisag - 2013-04-26 18:39

It honestly seems louder playing music off the ipod vs the radio Reno.

I'll do the patch and report back...

ianisag - 2013-04-26 19:27

Well it seems the TDK website is down, so I can't update the firmware...at least not right now! Bugger!

radio.raheem - 2013-04-26 19:31

pollox......what ever you do be carful.....but if you brick your tdk don't panic like i did.....i think there is a copy of the firmware posted by retrodos on my old thread mate....i have a copy but not sure how to post it here

radio.raheem - 2013-04-26 19:37

the firmware is on the second page posted by retrodos on my old thread....hope this helps

ianisag - 2013-04-28 18:48

Am certain that this thread ( above ) should answer

all of your question's

ianisag - 2013-04-28 20:19

Thanks I have read through that thread. Did find the PDF though and thanks!

So I did the upgrade and it went flawlessly...still sounds about the same, so not really increase in volume like I am looking for.

I have to say that my Lasonic is still louder, it doesn't sound nearly as rich as the TDK, but the ol girl is still louder. Still gonna keep searching for a way to make this thing a little louder.

Thanks for all the tips gents!

Welcome

install a Tuned bass port into the TDK to allow the speaker's to move a bit free'er - to help to tune it to a different reasonance frequency would be my best guess ?

me i'll stay with my Older Cassette Boombox's ( Like the Lasonic's 931 series ) as they seem to have more character & such than present day electronic's

stynger007 - 2013-04-28 20:47

Agreed with the older boomboxes, Just gave my Brother my 2nd Gen. TRC-931 for his office, he wanted my Spacetech Discolite - Brother or no Brother , they are too hard to come by

Tempted greatly to get the TDK 3 Speaker, heard mixed reviews including a software upgrade that wasn`t available until recently. Has anyone done a side by side comparison between the 2 speaker and 3 speaker?

Has anyone done a side by side comparison between the 2 speaker and 3 speaker?

Would be nice to see in a video,

but I am NOT rushing out to get one of Either of these model's after reading about other people's impression of the sound.  and all of the firmware malarkey to be able to play digital music, requiring a computer at some point to play music through this...

I Spoke to a owner of the Three speaker model and he didn't like the Rigid Handle for carrying this as opposed to a standard boombox that has a swivel handle.  So the TDK 3-speaker version put's more of a strain on your wrist when carrying it as it doesn't wave with the flow of your walking like a standard boombox would.

Wonder why the 3-speaker version TDK don't have a carrying strap like the 2-Speaker TDK version does?

ianisag - 2013-04-29 13:05

TBH...it's a really heavy box. I would guess about 40lbs with batteries installed. I carry it about 50-100 yards each time I use it. So I have no complaints there. I also have large hands so the grip is actually really nice by me.

The thing I am not a fan of is the lack of loudness from this thing. Plus a remote or bluetooth would have been nice. Other then that it is a great looking and sounding boombox.

ianisag - 2013-04-29 13:09

Like I stated earlier my lasonic is louder but not as rich or as clear. I also wish the TDK had selectable audio levels like the lasonic has as well.

More over I wish it had range to it. The speakers are super nice but I feel like they can go way louder with an amp boost (they only put out 35 watts I have read).

I have read that the firmware can be hacked, I am thinking about trying this myself and see if I can get anything else out of the volume.

If I gotta be carrying 40lbs of boombox around I'd rather carry my Panasonic RX-A2, weigh's about the same & it's a bit more to fiddle with, consume's 10 D batteries too

and Am fairly certain it's Louder than the TDK, imho

ianisag - 2013-04-29 13:38

I'm sure there are many boxes louder then this thing I am disappointed in it to say the least. Just doesn't get as loud as I need it too.

mrkeith - 2013-04-29 14:34

WOW!!!!! I have A TDK 3 & 2. My TDK 3 gets Loud, I Mean Loud. with my iPod & USB. Got a Tape Deck & CD Deck. I Got No Complaints. The TDK 2 Rocks as well. I Flipped The Handle on The TDK 3. Much easy to Carry Now

ianisag - 2013-04-29 14:46

Maybe I hold unreal expectations of loudness. Haha!
