Belt Tension?

renegaderacer - 2013-05-13 04:11

Hi guys,

I bought a selection pack of belts off the bay to change the ones in the tape decks of my Deccasound DSC1122 which had perished. However, there was no flat belt so I couldn't change that but one of the decks had an intact (but probably knackered) belt on it, so I decided to work on that one.

I remounted the flat belt which had come off the wheels and changed the thin, square belt but as the original thin belt had long since departed this world, I could only guess at the size of it. As this is the first time I've changed belts, how tight should they be? I've heard they should be quite loose but mine is a bit on the tight side. I thought this would stop it slipping but I've also heard this can be bad for the mechanics of the deck? When I tried the tape deck the functions all worked for a few seconds, then the original, flat belt from the motor came off, leaving the motor continuely spinning. Is this down to an old, stretched belt or could it be to do with the new thin belt I fitted being too tight?

Sorry for all the questions!

Cheers,

Giles

Sounds like the flat belt is stretched and too loose if its coming off. The thinner belt should be tight enough so it doesn't slip but not too tight as it'll put too much sideways force on the spindles and stop it spinning freely. It's a trial and error thing if you don't have the original sizing but there's usually a bit of leeway to be had either side of the original dimensions.

Thanks for that. I've ordered some flat belts so I'll have a little play with different sizes when they come through.
