my box is signaling aliens

I have a Curtis Mathes box model JX-500. Everything works and plays however occassionally during cassette play computer language noise comes over the speakers while the tape mode is selected. It will not disrupt the music but is in the background. If you press stop, intermittantly the noise will come and go. Sounds like moris code and computer language.

I am sure it is picking up RF signals from my cell phone and wi-fi because it goes nuts when I surf the internet or make a phone call with my phone near it. But it will also make the noise when there are no devices around it in my house.

Im confused....Is there something wrong with it? The circuit board on the back which controls the pickup for the head seems very sensitive. You can blow on it and the noise of your breath can be heard through the speakers. If you touch or rub the solder joints on that board with your finger it sounds the same as rubbing the needle on a phono record player. A little too sensitive if you ask me. Only during tape mode does this box do this. Aux and radio are fine.

Maybe Ill line the inside of the case with a copper mesh because I'm not going to be able to sheild it from all RF interference.

What do you guys think? Are their components that can fail which will cause this sensitivity? I don't think they could have sold this thing back in the day being that sensitive. RF signals have been around for years that would have caused undesirable playback resulting returns if it always did this.

I purchased used and just noticed this about a month ago. Had this for a few years now.

Thanks,
Ryan

Did you check all the grounding wires and screw connections to the boards and other components? Sounds like something isn't grounded properly.

Sounds like really bad shielding.

I think thats a good idea. Most of the screws have a tracer on the board to help ground them. Maybe I will try to run a wire from that board to another gnd location and see what happens.

failing that your box is haunted

no seriously, try what these guys have said, sounds like it should cure the problem, rather than it being casper the friendly ghost interfering with it!
