Tape deck wheels not moving! Help!!!

blutmadchen - 2013-06-15 09:54

The wheels in my Sharp wq272 just gave up in tape 1. Now the wheels are not spinning and it's making a loud, screechy grinding noise inside.

Best scenario: The belt snapped. You'll need a new belt. Many people on this site can help you with it.

Worse scenario: One of the gears broke. You'll need a new gear. Those can be quite rare and hard to find.

You'll have to open the box up and look inside to find out what exactly happened.

Could you tell us what the box was doing when it broke down? (Rewinding/Fast forwarding, playing, nothing aka it happened when I turned it on like normal)

Belts given up is the most likely option

it's not the belt i took it apart and looked at it now i can't get it back together and my tape deck catch broke off. this thing's toast

please help

The belt might look fine but finally stretched far enough that it no longer grips?

Probably academic at this point as it sounds like you've done some damage. Have you worked on these before?

Pics would help diagnosis

I have fixed a sears sr 2100, which was easy to open and close. I finally got this one back together and back to normal , but now BOTH tape decks stopped working. this boombox is dense and very hard to open and close without breakage. I superglued one of the door trap prongs back together that's fine now. I just want to make these wheels spin and play tapes again. I'm afraid to take it apart now but I'm not giving up.

Sounds like one of the rubber tires came of the wheel that drives the spindle. You would find parts of it in the box normally. Looks like a o-ring. This would at least explain the screechy noise....

This is as far as I can go. I can't remove the tape function buttons without scaring, or possibly breaking them.

michiel - 2013-06-16 00:54

I see no rubber wheels, only gears.... If you press play while it's open. Can you see if al the gears do their thing properly?

brutus442 - 2013-06-16 07:37

Michiels advice is the best course of action...test the functions while the case is open and note any resistance to the actions.

Are any of the gears missing any teeth or are any mis-aligned?

UPDATE: Its been fixed. I sent it in for repair. Tape works perfectly now. It sounds amazingly loud and clear with good bass for its size. now my fav box!
