Sharp GF-9292 tape deck in play squeals like a sick R2D2

boombap9292 - 2013-06-22 23:31

Hoping somebody on here may have encountered this serious issue. My recently acquired mint 9292 was playing perfectly one minute, but in the dark I accidentally pushed the REC button instead of play, and then pushed it a few more times before realising it was the REC button! DOH!! Now when I press any of the PLAY/REW/FFW buttons only a loud whirring/squealing tone comes out of the system, no more cool retro beats from the cassettes. Radio still works fine, no issues there. Has anybody had this happen to them, anyone know what the cause is or how to fix it? HELP! I wanny fix my baby!! ;(

Cheers all.

When you pushed the record button you likely disturbed years of oxidation on the record bar on the main amp circuit board, thus causing the noise you are hearing.
Fortunately this is a simple fix. You need to open up the unit and lift the deck to one side so you can access the recording bar, which is essentially a switch which moves when the record button is pressed. Use some contact cleaner on the entire record bar and press it like a hundred times and test it.
If you are in the UK you can buy contact cleaner at Maplins.

Yep...do what Docs says

Doc! Thanks so much for your prompt and simple solution. I will give it a go : ) In the meantime if you have any photo(s) or a diagram of the 'record bar' that would help me in identifying it then I would be most appreciative.

Again, thanks so much for your reply.

Cheers!

Looks something like this...

Its the long silver bar that has a switch inside it.

Happy days, another one booms!

Better break the record tab off the cassette before another accident.

ahah! what an excellent idea

It's been so long since handling a mighty cassette I completely forgot this vital function haha.

Cheers!
