Geting pc5 speakers out.

michiel - 2013-10-20 23:10

Yesterday I found a cheap 20 euros jvc pc5. Everyting works, but the speakers need a refoam. How do I get the speakers out of their housing? I just dont get it

deliverance - 2013-10-21 02:11

yep thats the way a little power house the pc-5  i had to re-foam mine last year what a difference it made

radio.raheem - 2013-10-21 02:20

Loved the pc5 chris,, that's the first box i bought when i joined here many moons ago.(mistook it for a pc55) pics were that bad back then..only thing i didn't like were all those wires on the back

deliverance - 2013-10-21 02:31

agreed reno they are a cracler,   it must of been a buzz opening up a brand new boxed one

radio.raheem - 2013-10-21 02:36

Agreed chris id give my left barnicle for a new boxed pc55....could of had one for £200 years ago but the guy was a newbie and i just didn't go for it...i know the member who has it now...seen a few since then but they go for to much 6 months coin when your on the dole lol

nickfish - 2013-10-21 03:05

The 55 is a looker all right and tecnically on a higher level than almost anything else but the pc5 is the power-house. I like mine better than my m90. I was lucky enough to find some brand new speakers on ebay for the pc5 last year so should be able to keep it going for a long time! Only cost me a tenner! Plus i picked up 2 extra pc5's in less good condition so loads of spares there too. The last 2 on ebwy uk did not fetch more than 60 quid. Amazing and under-rated box.
Oh, and i got a complete and almost mint pc55 in the uk (ebay again) for 120 only a month ago While Chris was fixing my beat- up snotter. Was able to give it to him since he had bonded with it over a few weeks. We both ended up with good ones. Result.

radio.raheem - 2013-10-21 03:14

agree nick just those back wires i don't like....the 55 is just as good tho if you change those awful drivers.....altho i do prefer the ,90 to both mate...altho its years since  have heard a pc5

yeah nick they turned out good in the end the deck on them is superb ,  my tuner was good to after re-placing half the components untill i sat on the bastard

nickfish - 2013-10-21 06:24

Oh well Chris, we will find another beater for it's tuner board. Reno; you dont need to use all those cables on the back because the ribbon cable carries it all anyway.

michiel - 2013-10-21 06:27

Hey guys thanks for the info! Thanks for the manual brutus! Cant wait to have it going again. Ive played a little with it now, but when I put on some bass I see the peaces of hardened foam dancing behind the speaker grills I already discovered that this boombox make lovely recordings! At the moment it sounds really bad tho.

michiel - 2013-10-21 10:06

Okay, got the speakers out. That was an easy job after all! But now I'm looking at the speakers.... This refoaming is going to be an awfull job im afraid!  It's so small and the foam is glued on the inside of the cone to make things more complex.

Chris, did you remove the dust cap to align the coil inside the magnet?

deliverance - 2013-10-21 10:26

yes i did remove the dust cap"s and used some thin card board to align the coil .

michiel - 2013-10-21 10:35

Smart move I guess.... But how did you remove the cap? Looks like it sits very solid there in the middle  Is there a trick?

deliverance - 2013-10-21 10:40

use a scalpel michiel .     or a five inch bolster chisel

michiel - 2013-10-21 10:50

Lol, had the scalpel already in my hands and almost cut into the paper cone  This must  be the first time I got the feeling I'm not gonna manage a job. Which is a rather cool feeling!

Will let it rest now, waiting for the foams to arrive

deliverance - 2013-10-21 10:55

they are tricky to do ,  when you go to fit the new foams make sure the coil is not to far out because they will sound crap .

michiel - 2013-10-21 11:10

Yeah, I noticed that there is not much play between the coil and magnet! I'm already thinking of glueing the foam on the outside of the cone instead of the inside. It would make things easier. But first have to see how the foam fits the speaker.

Would be awesome if this works out okay at the end

driptip - 2013-10-21 18:49

hi michiel, i also need the foams for the pc5 ,  i wonder if you could help me out with the size of them so i can order a pair.

That's how i do it M makes life 10 times esier....also i don't remove the dustcaps there is no need to imho,,,i glue the foam to the speaker first...let it dry then glue the outer rimm....pushing around the cone gradually checking there is no voice coil rubbing....i guess there is just a knack to it... when all glued around  i have made sure of no voice coil rubbing and let it dry which takes about an hour

michiel - 2013-11-08 12:46

Just finished the refoam project. It is a big success! What an awesome sounding machine is this!!!  Totally shocked lol

It went very smooth. Didn't remove the dust cap, it aligned pretty much all by itself. I also removed the cardboard ring between the speaker frame and the foam, to replace it with a self made laser cut wooden ring of 1mm thickness. Because the original piece had become a little weak by the years. Wasn't a reall necessity, but to make it even a more perfect job lol

Well I'm going to enjoy the basssssss!  Thanks all for helping me prepare for the job!

brutus442 - 2013-11-08 12:53

pics...we need pics! LOL

Great job Michiel!!!

michiel - 2013-11-08 13:00

Yeah, I planned to make pics! But lightning is so bad at the moment and I wanted to finish the job NOW!  Sorry, so no pics this time

brutus442 - 2013-11-08 13:04

..

Can't wait for the after pics!

michiel - 2013-11-08 13:15

Well it's al together now. It's just a square silver box with some red and green LEDs lol. It's the sound that's awesome about this box! And I can't even push it real hard now cause the glue has to dry a bit more lol

deliverance - 2013-11-08 13:21

they sound the buisness michiel

I have no idea how they get such a good sound out of these small speakers. It gets extremely good with loudness on! Must be one of my best sounding boxes!

Thanks dude, yes hope to find a 55 one day. Now I know I'm able to refoam speakers I don't have to worry when I see one. I presume these suffer from the same rotting foams as this 5.

But till now Im stil having fun with the 5. The glue dried up and now it's time for her to work haha

radio.raheem - 2013-11-09 18:56

your welome dude,,,,the 55 drivers will not need doing mate....they are bigger drivers howeaver there not as good as the pc5 ones imho....this is why i highly reommend replacing them anyway....the 55 is so much better with newer drivers my friend
