Any tips for curing a warbly casette deck

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 00:18

Yess it's my flipping goldstar...on moderate volumes she seems fine

as soon as you turn her up it's dreadful...diddn't bother me at first but now it's driving me bonkers...eather there is something wrong or this is standard for these things...if it's standard i wouldn't reommend this box 1 bit....

everything is spotlessly clean and i belive she has had new belts

any ideas thanks

jt.techno - 2013-11-10 01:06

Can you describe what you mean by warbly? On face of it, sounds like my recent 'wow' problem on my 9191 ... http://REPLACEMENT ERROR/topic...y=361725370822269648
So from my limited experience of these things, it could be motor needs lubricating or motor/pulley belt is not staying central on the motor pulley ... I am not familiar with your box to know if it also may be a worn capstan sleeve/pulley/idler but may be worth checking all these are not worn, marked or dirty. Hope this gives you some ideas :-)

docs - 2013-11-10 01:22

As above but since you just got it, I would change the belts first if you haven't already.

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 01:59

Dave it's not warbly on normal volume...just when you put on say a bit under half and over...the belts seem very strong great bite on play rew....if its the belts which i highly doubt i'll just stick it in my back room and forget about it,,,, i cant change belts mate just the m90 and the kaboom are the only ones i can do

These are all exellent ideas but sadly beyond my capabilities...it is most likley one of these symtoms that is causing it

jt.techno - 2013-11-10 05:56

The volume part puzzles me - almost as if the extra power draw from amp electronics is making tape motor voltage fluctuate a bit ... or the motor is simply not being as efficient as it should when this happens, due to lack of use over time and maybe in need of lubrication ... I would first try a few squirts of Servisol around the motor spindle and make sure it turns freely when flywheel is spun ... hopefully you can get to this easily?  Worth a first try :-)

Sorry for double identical post ... am out and about and probably hit submit twice by accident - d'oh!

seb968 - 2013-11-10 06:59

The warbly sound maybe nothing to do with the tape mechanism. Does the radio sound bad when you turn it up. Could nbe a power saupply issue causing distortion in the amplifier at high volumes. JT Techno's theory about speed fluctuations due to dodgy power supply are also valid but I think it is far more likely to be the amp doing this because it is clipping. Just a thought.

jt.techno - 2013-11-10 07:18

Sounds good idea Seb, would be interested to find out if also happening on radio too, regards Jon (probably easier to type than my full forum name :-)

Thanks John! That is easier!

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 08:00

When you turn the volume up imagine a tapedeck with a very dirty capstan but clean head thats what its like,,,i dont think its a power issue or a motor one beause motors tend to speed up and down,,,,it is warbly but stable if you catch my drift

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 08:06

ohh the radio is normal on flat out but in mono but cristal sound.....im almost tempted to send this thing back but i can't be bothered with the hassle etc

seb968 - 2013-11-10 08:11

Sounds like John is right on the money then, still a power supply issue, which means it is fixable.

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 08:26

My money would be on bad belts dirty mech but in every other way the belts seem fine

if i had bothered to read the aution in the first place i would have left it there....worst sin for me missing parts unless you have them or can get them

yup another scam for me all over again.....if im gunna have to play it so low i may as well buy a flippin ipod and be done with it

seb968 - 2013-11-10 08:29

Sorry to hear that you are unhappy; looked so promising. But if the fault only shows up at volume I would still say power supply rather than belts. Which parts are missing?

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 09:05

The glass off the front door seb,,,,i just dont buy things with missing parts like that....

Its the same story for me over and over ask the guys

seb968 - 2013-11-10 11:46

Thats a bummer!  You going to send it back to the ebay seller then?

jt.techno - 2013-11-10 12:49

Sorry to hear it's a bit more than the warbling on high volumes - sounds like a return may be in order but I fully understand what you mean by all the hassle of repackaging and returning, hence why you might not bother.  I would probably keep it as a future project and maybe some spare parts may be appropriated through the forum members or elsewhere in coming weeks? I'm ever the optimist but can understand why your optimism may be draining if this is something that has happened before. Hang on in there and I hope it all turns out OK in the not too distant future! Jon.

jt.techno - 2013-11-10 13:27

Looking at the other recent threads ... hopefully the "Mighty M90" fix by legends helps balance this one out (a little bit) for you :-)

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 13:59

Yeah mate, thanks for that, I need a bit of luck! I'll start a teck thread, when I crack it! But at the moment it is being a bitch . If you find out anymore about whats wrong with your Goldstar and want my help, just ask. Thinking about another problem may take my mind off the 70!

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 14:15

Whats the prob with the m70 seb.....is it the usual low volume etc   sliders dont work....if so lad it means the volume sliders need rebuilding...very tricky....give docs a ping he has fixed this issue a few times

seb968 - 2013-11-10 14:26

Full explaination of whats wrong with the M-70 is on your original Goldstar thhread. The sliders work, it is the MMS (music search) muting circuit that is causing the problem. I think I'll ping docs a pm if you don't think he will mind!

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 14:36

Well he is a nice guy...you're here to stay....he can only say yes or no.....im sure it's a much easier task than my m90 lol....id do it for you but i fear it would end out the window lol.....

Hey aafter 3 hours of tracing through the circuitry of the M-70 I have found a short circuit diode!  Finaly getting somewhere, keep your fingers crossed for me!

Well if you fix her maybe you an send it me for an evaluation.as mine might of been cream crakered..im always putting the m70 down,,,,and all the guys love em,,,i sure would like to be proven wrong regarding the m70

seb968 - 2013-11-10 17:06

Well your more than welcome to borrow her but I have yet to appraise her myself. I have allways wanted one of these but will she live up to the dream? Replacing the diode has fixed the mute problem, nice and loud now....but it is still quite loud when volume sliders are set to minimum so there could be a volume slider issue or it could be something ellse. I have a way to go yet but that is for another night! I have allready stayed up too late, I have work tomorrow!  Still glad I've got the mute problem sorted. Music search has started working as well!  Anyway ta ta for now, i'm goig to get some sleep!

radio.raheem - 2013-11-10 17:30

sorted your getting there all in all a mega positave day

driptip - 2013-11-10 21:37

i was also going to suggest to make sure is in the proper voltage , long story but it happened to me.
