My exciting find!!

71spud - 2008-03-18 15:49

Well, exciting for me anyway. This is a JVC PC-5 that I got from James. I have been listening to my iPod hooked up the AUX today.

But look at what I found to go along with my PC-5!!!!!!! As if the sound is not big enough I found a pair of JVC RB-95K speakers. The exact model pictured in the PC-5 literature and a perfect match for the PC-5 in looks and performance (6 ohm 20 watts RMS) And sort of like the PC-5 speakers which are full-range with a fake-tweeter-look bass port, these are 2 way speakers with the mid being the tweeter and the "tweeter" is actually the bass port. While these are not in mint condition due to someone mounting them on the sides and also at one point hung off the back, they are in surprisingly good condition. The edges are clean and undamaged, the chrome is excellent etc. They came shipped to me in what looked like a pretty sad looking box, but when I TRIED to open it up I found out that the speakers were wrapped in bubble wrap a few times and then the ENTIRE PACKAGE was sprayed with expandable foam about 3 inches thick all around every side. You could have floated to Miami from Cuba with this package.

Anyway, I am going to be cleaning them up and fixing all the minor issues. I think these are pretty rare... have any of you run across these?

See them pictured below?

jvc.floyd - 2008-03-18 15:53

oh my god that is hard core bad a$$ that system is simply stunning and un believable ,ive never seen all those in one place before , Eek Eekthose speakers are rarer than rare

71spud - 2008-03-18 16:37

BTW I do have an extra amp section so I can power all of these speakers with their own amps. I am working through different arrangements right now. I will post a picture when I am done, but it might be a few weeks before it all comes together. What can I say, I am a PC-5 nut.....

This is a picture of the packing job.... (not counting the bubble wrap that was around the speakers!)

redbenjoe - 2008-03-18 17:05

thats such a great set of finds -

and --check out my avitar - its a tiny shot - but look at the center section -- the amps are so strong -- seems like they can power anything !!

71spud - 2008-03-18 17:23

I have seen your avatar lots of times and I never noticed the PC-5 center!! Laugh Out Loud Some PC-5 fan I am.... of course this last Sunday I could not tell if the picture up on the big screen at church was my wife or not... I don't know what is worse!!! (Yes I do! Big Grin )

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-18 17:30

That's very cool, they match perfectly. I wasn't aware JVC made matching bookshelf speakers for the PC series. Did they do the same thing for any of the other PC series boxes?

71spud - 2008-03-18 17:47

I don't know if JVC made bookshelf speakers for any of the other PC series boxes. I have never seen the literature for the other ones though. Back in 1981 this was the only one of the PC series I had ever seen and even then it was only in a brochure. I ended up getting a "poor man's" version of the PC-5. It had the same look and had detatchable speakers, but a fake component center section, but it was only $100 instead of almost $400. It was nothing great but it served its purpose but once I had it I stopped looking and I threw out that box years ago. One day it popped into my head again and I eventually came here looking. Now I have my PC-5 fix and then some. It was by total luck that I happened to find these bookshelf speakers. They were not even for sale... they HAD been for sale... and they never did sell. Of course I didn't have to think twice before I bought them. Smile

ned.209 - 2008-03-18 18:17

Never seen those, theyre mad lookin!

71spud - 2008-03-19 07:17

It was weird... some used industrial and medical equipment surplus clearing house in Quebec had the speakers for sale... go figure.
Surplus 2d

jvc.floyd - 2008-03-19 07:40

oh if i had those bad boys i would build a box around them.i can see it now the jvc boominator.

71spud - 2008-03-19 08:10

I have enough parts to do that... Dual amps? Dual Cassette? 16 D-CELLS? I Wonder how much it will friggin weigh... 75lbs? I just need to fabricate the side panels to hold it all together...

THE JVC BOOMINATOR!!!!!!

retro.addict - 2008-03-19 10:40

WOW 71spud, I think you should bolt it all together! Cool That looks awesome!! Eek

oldskool69 - 2008-03-19 10:42

Now yer talkin 'spud!!!! Hook those babies together and show a pic or clip of you actually 'carrying' it!!! Laugh Out Loud Great finds by the way. Ther were a lot of compo systems that had optional parts. I'm looking for the matching turntable for my CP-7. Smile

Absolutely, that would be a freaking awesome portable. Well portable until your shoulder dislocated from the weight. Wink

jaredscottfla - 2008-03-19 18:45

very very Cool

71spud - 2008-03-19 20:59

Thanks everyone... I will put this together I promise. Smile I won't even have to bastardize my "good" PC-5, because I didn't use any of the parts from the PC-5 in the first picture to make this mock-up of the BOOMINATOR... (I might have to rethink the name though... How about the JCV-PC5000? Hmmmm doesn't quite do it does it...) It is almost like it was made to do this. The big RB-95K speakers are just an inch deeper than the components.... just enough to leave space for the patch cables. The stack of the required components are exactly the right height to pull this off and look "correct" It is also simple enough to power the amps seperately off of each tape deck. I am planning on bi-amping the speakers (one off of each amp) and using a home-brew crossover and resistor combination to keep the original frequency and impedance intact. The balance control on the amp will adjust the relative power level between the woofer and the tweeter.

As you can see I have put too much thought into this already! And it was not even my original intent to come up with something like this. But what the heck... if you have the parts why not build it. I even have a metal fabrication shop not too far away I have used to make a custom mounting plate for a recessed plasma TV for a customer of mine. However I can pretty much guess that the metal to hold this all together will weigh more than 20 lbs. I better start lifting weights....

redbenjoe - 2008-03-19 21:09

hope you use aluminum -- its light and no rust and finishes any way you want

71spud - 2008-03-19 21:15

Is that what you used? Or are those "stock" side plates on yours? I will have to do some research into what type of metal to use. As far as rust and weight goes you are correct. As I plan on using this everyday walking around in the rain I better take that into consideration! Laugh Out Loud Just kidding... there are other factors that may make Aluminum the second best choice. I don't know yet. I will do my research though... And eat my Wheaties...

The GF-777's one of those 'boxes which nearly dislocates your shoulder! Big Grin If I absolutely have to carry mine, it's by my side, as it's the heaviest boombox I own. Second is the GF-9000. Cool

ford93 - 2008-03-26 20:07

Very nice radio you've got there 71spud!

ohboy - 2008-03-26 20:09

Wow, that looks very nice... Wink

jlf - 2008-03-26 20:36

Crazy!

I still learn something new every time Im on here!!!

71spud - 2008-03-27 07:31

One of these days I will put it all together.... When all my PC-5's show up and I can make some decisions as to what will go where and what will end up in the bone-pile.

I learn something new everytime I'm on here too. I am glad I happened upon this site! It brings me back to another place and time... I love the 80's! I am playing music on my box that I had not listened to in a long time....
