Toshiba RT-120S . Is it good enough?

brigadier.vytas - 2010-01-18 10:58

hello all. I have possibility to buy this Toshiba. Is here some owners of this model? What can u say about it? Thanks!

meljak - 2010-01-18 16:06

its a nice honest little box, a bit coloured on the sound but I think the look is nice and clean, and they record quite well for a basic box.

brigadier.vytas - 2010-01-19 06:10

thanks, Meljak. Tomorrow i'm going to meet my Neighbour-the Boombox Hustla and see what we have there.

andyboombox - 2010-01-20 02:08

yo brigadier,
yeah, ive got one-exact match for yours.nice clean little thing but i agree that its sound is very shy,but it is only a baby one compared to its big brothers so is bound to be less competent on the sound.definately not one for the street scene.would have adorned someones kitchen in 1981/82.you seem like me- i can never find the big ones lately-all i ever come across is little stuff like the rt120.wheres all the big toshiba's? Frown

brigadier.vytas - 2010-01-20 02:49

i have it already. Yeah, Andy, thank u for your comment, u're right- the sound is very shy..The only good thing is that this small box look's very good and it's in very good cosmetical condition. There's even no possibility to use it with an iPod..Yes, like Meljak said, it records pretty good, but u can't listen to connected iPod, it only records and that's kinda strange. My mate-technician will help, off course, but i paid about 35 euros for this box and that repairing will cost to. So, for jobless dude that was not very clever purchase :].Boombox-obsession won against the mind like never before, but, anyway, this is my 10th box, and i'm happy:]. I'll post some pics very soon. What if i'll try to change the speakers? Will it help in this case? Or with this amplifier there's no chance to improve the sound, what do u think, guys?

hey brigadier,im in the same boat-im jobless but keep myself happy and amused by collecting these things-anyway, your lucky mate-the deck on my rt 120 doesnt even work!how much is 35 euros in uk sterling?ive just got what i believe is an extremely rare aiwa tpr 180k monobox that i paid £10 for.now it needs work, and a good clean, but it felt right in my own heart to pay that much,as my new contact lets me name my price.its all down to individual taste and preference-with me the aiwa looks so cool-it has a massive speaker!poor mans jvc 550?!if it felt right for you to have the rt120 good for you-if you dont want to keep it you could also ship it on- offer it for sale on here or stick it on ebay.as i say the 120 is limited in all its means sadly, cos like you say it does look the part.ive got mine all cleaned up and it shines.word of warning though brigadier-i offered mine up on here recently and got no interest!we all want the big ones!!!!!!!

aiwa tpr 180k

brigadier.vytas - 2010-01-21 02:48

all cool, mate,i 'll keep rt 120 for myself. My gf likes it to (we kinda collect together:]), it's pretty ok for our 10th box. About those big ones, yes, i need them to, but those hustlers here in LT know what prices to ask. One of them is selling a GF 9494 for about 115 pounds, box is with some serious damage on the front's alluminium pannels. Also he sells Philips D8444 for about 110 pounds. Other one is selling a Crown CSC 850 for about 100 pounds. One dude sold already a GF 777 for 200 pounds and other one sold a Sony (member Retro Addict uses this model's VU as his avatar, don't remember the model) for about 150 pounds. No doubt, for somebody these prices are totaly ok, but for me it would be very big deal right now and when i imagine, for how much are those hustlers getting those boxes at german flea markets........No freakin way!

That would be the GF-9000. Big Grin And it's a Sharp, not a Sony. LOL. Wink

brigadier.vytas - 2010-01-22 00:31

ehh shure it was GF 9000, u're right, my mistake

meljak - 2010-01-22 14:15

Its difficult to change the speakers in these, they are held in place from behind and not by screws - if you want to change them, you have to cut plastic away or use speakers the exact same depth.

It can be done though - I used dual cone blaupunkt car speakers - and it does sound better, had to glue them in though!

brigadier.vytas - 2010-01-23 03:08

yes, Meljak, i've seen how those speakers are mounted there, i don't think it could be difficult to change them. But if u say that changing can help to improve teh sound, i will try someday. Thanks allot for your help! Cheers!

That Toshiba looks to be in very nice condition! I turned one of those down 'cause it really had nothing going for it, it was in bad condition and looked to be of low quality and spec.
