Samsnites boxes part 8: go bigger

samsnite - 2010-02-11 10:24

Pioneer SK-353L, okayish sound, a bit accented on low midrange/midbass, cool looks, line in, music search system

Philips AZ8214, circa 1987, CD player, autoreverse deck, digital tuner, "turbo bass generator" woofer, nice sound at low volumes, the woofer is really weak (only 2,5 or 3 inches)

Sony CFS-77L, a real looker and real loud, weak bass but does not distort at high volumes, AMS deck

Aiwa TPR-990E, the nicest sounding oldskool bbox in my collection so far, nicest looks, best features: bass/treble/loudness control, metal semi logic deck with SG head, bias and eq control, four band tuner and twin antennas, line in, speakers out and more, timer standby system (not sure how it works and what it does). Unfortunately the deck is bust and only left speaker works. There is static coming from the right speaker but no sound. But i payed only 10 euros for it. Cool box!

Hi samsnite your AIWA caught my full attention awesome they are high quality boomer's for sure.If you can man get it repaired and back to it's former glory and you'll see what i mean.I also dig yor Sony too!

Aiwa- champion as usual..What a box. That was another great Finteligent findBig Grin . Like Pioneer, i dig that Sony to! Love those tweeter constructions and fat grilles!

samsnite - 2010-02-14 09:43

Thanks guys, yes i really dig the Aiwa. Lucky me to find it... Big Grin
Add to this i payed only 12 euros for the Pioneer and 10 for the Sony... talk about lucky! And both are in ok shape. The looks on the woofers on the Sony screams "BASS" but the disappointment is huge when you turn it up. The woofers are huge, some 17cm (cone + foam)...

Hey, these are some nice radios! I always liked the look of this sony and the pioneers and your aiwa belong to the few boomboxes with square speaker grills which look really nice. Definitely on my want list.

You´re very lucky if you can buy this units for little money!

retro.addict - 2010-02-14 14:54

My goodness Samsnite, my credibility towards you just got a whole lot better when I saw the Sony CFS-77 and the Aiwa TPR-990! Cool Some amazing boomboxes and awesome quality pics! Big Grin Thanks so much!

PS, about the TPR-990: Lie the unit on it's back, take off the control knobs and spray some electrical contact cleaner in the bits of the bass, treble and balance controls (pots) that turn. Putting the knobs back on and turning each one back and forth multiple times should hopefully get rid of the static problem and make the right speaker work.

Thanks drmz and R.A! And R.A, i really really would want to have more nice chrome silver boxes than dull black plastic eggs... Big Grin (like many of my current boxes). I am quite amazed i managed to get my hands on these babies in my little home town. I think i have to expand my search territory towards Helsinki... Cool

About the TPR-990, i have sprayed the knobs, actually it was the first thing i did. Opened it up to get a look for loose cables or any visible damage. No luck there either. Have to open it some day again to check the speaker... Maybe i will go ask a price for repairing it, someday.

Great boxes! From where did you got these? I'm already trying to search radios from Helsinki but yes, there are many stores to look Smile.

samsnite - 2010-02-20 06:31

From Porvoo my man! Am i totally wrong or are you into old computers as well? Are you the same muto as in C=foorumi? =)

samsnite - 2010-02-20 06:34

But dont you come steppin on my territory man! Wink I sweep this town clean.

muto - 2010-02-20 10:29

hehe, yes. I have old computers and arcade machines also.

samsnite - 2010-02-21 01:58

Ok nice, i am collecting computer and video games too! One of the main reasons i started collecting boxes was the shortage of old games and computers in my town... Big Grin Haha Finland is so small!
