Picked up a few lately...

docs - 2010-08-22 07:13

The Crown CSC-960 is a nice sounding box despite it's size. Clear and has nice highs and a good bass that evens out. I like it and it certinly sounds better than I thought it would.
More pics of boxes to follow, I picked up a few in the passed weeks.

docs - 2010-08-22 07:32

The Sharp 9090 is a stunning looking box with superb sound to match. This one is a classic all rounder which can give some decent volume and easy mobility. The decks are notoriuos for issues but if you get a 100% working one like this, it is superb quality and sounds the business.

docs - 2010-08-22 07:38

The TEC 878RR aka SUPERJUMBO is a very good looking box. The sound is decent and it goes reasonably loud for it's size. This is a mobile unit without too much arm ache and it will surely turn heads with it's classic looks. Special features are the flashing lights on the speakers.

docs - 2010-08-22 07:47

Again not a new acquisition but you gotta love it. The Sharp VZ2000 needs Britains strongest man to move it around. A fully working and complete unit like this one is a treasure. Playing vinyls is just awesome and a true signature of the early 80's. Superb build quality and looks add to one of the finest ghettoblasters on the planet.

docs - 2010-08-22 07:56

The Hitachi K26L is a signature in the Hitachi range for the era. A mix between a boomer and a mobile TV unit for the late 70's early 80's was all the rage. Sadly the TV on this one needs work but it is an ongoing project. The sound is surprisingly pretty good on this and it isn't that heavy.

docs - 2010-08-22 07:59

The Sharp 9494 is a decent above average sized box with great quality about it. It has a good solid sound that doesn't go overly loud. Classy looks put this one on many want lists and it doesn't disappoint either. Another Sharp masterpeice.

docs - 2010-08-22 08:09

Classic all timer, the Crown CSC-850 not only looks sweet but has sound to match. This one goes pretty loud for it's size and has a unique feature with a carry strap instead of a handle. Mine is a little rough but restored to 100% working condition. A lovely design, just look at those VU's!

docs - 2010-08-22 08:12

Here is the kamasonic KA1000. All I can say is wow. This is a really nice boomer that is medium in weight and looks lighter than it actually is. With flashing lights all over the shop and somewhat of a Sharp look/feel it's a beauty and what seems to be quite rare. At 33" wide it's the biggest box I've got.

docs - 2010-08-22 08:18

Commonly known as the Toshiba WX1, this is a big box that has a decent sound quality though doesn't go as loud as it looks as though it should. It has some nice features like Pitch Control. Though these are notorious for the woofers rotting out and destroying the sound, with careful selection of speakers it is an easy replacement job to restore it back to full glory. This one is the marmite of boomboxes, you ethier love it or loathe it. I love it.

im.out.of.hear - 2010-08-22 08:26

All i can say Doc,is Awsom..Simply Awwsommm..You got a top rate collection mate..serious !! Well done man..

docs - 2010-08-22 08:28

Hitachi 8180, a lovely sound box. This has classic looks and is a true classic of the Hitachi range. Being one of the better boxes in the Hitachi range it has superb build quality and features to match. Easily portable and while it may not get the heads turning for it's looks it will for it's volume.

docs - 2010-08-22 08:32

An underestimated boomer is the Hitachi 8290. It has a smooth sound and great classic looks. Overall a middle of the road unit that actually performs above it's weight and is definitely worth the low pickup value if you can get one.

docs - 2010-08-22 08:40

This one is a box that would have sold to the masses. A mixture of old and new technology with an upright CD player. It is a small unit that is very mobile and makes basic sound that is listenable. I think it's a brilliant boomer and brought the mid to late 80's crashing into the 90's.

docs - 2010-08-22 08:43

An old Sharp 570E that would have been in most school kids bedrooms due to its low cost and high manufacturing. A basic box but one with classic Sharp design. Even though these sold in their millions there are very few around and many were probably skipped. This one is in fair condition and is an ideal kitchen radio.

docs - 2010-08-22 08:49

Sharp 7850 has classic looks. It is an average performer but surprisingly quite a rare beast. Ideal for the kitchen but also lightwight and easily mobile. Don't expect good even loud sound from this one, it was one of Sharp's low/medium end boxes. Nonetheless it is a nice one to have on a shelf still pumping out.

docs - 2010-08-22 09:04

The Sharp 990 is another marmite box. Though this undoubtedly is a spark from the era allowing the genius to integrate synth into their masterpieces. Double deck is perfect for authoring. This three piecer is a classic and sounds nice, a true Sharp great.

docs - 2010-08-22 09:15

This one needs no introduction. The top of the range Sharp 777 is one of the all time classic boomboxes. It has great sound quality and is bulging with features along with the classy looks. This box performs to its stature, it goes loud, undistorted and looks the business. If you have the arms for it, it can go mobile, but don't expect to not draw attention because this will even with it turned off.

docs - 2010-08-22 09:21

The Sharp 9797 is a great all round blaster. Small enough to be easily mobile yet provide some nice even quality sound. These are underestimated boxes and ooze Sharp quality. If you can pick one up cheap enough, grab one, you won't regret it.

lav.loo - 2010-08-22 09:42

very nice pics and good write up DOCS Nod Yes nice mixture of boxes there too, great stuff Big Grin

reli - 2010-08-22 09:49

That 9797 seems to have the exact same tape deck as the 8989. Looks like it might have real tweeters though.

docs - 2010-08-22 12:30

Thanks folks, must say the 8989 does look like an identical front piece for the tape deck.

im.out.of.hear - 2010-08-22 14:07

Doc i got the 8989 and i had a 9797,both decks are the same, infact, the innards are very simular..oh yeh,you have an awwsom collect man..

teamstress - 2010-08-22 15:41

Nice bunch! That 8180 looks all business!

old.school.scott - 2010-08-22 16:04

I like your collection.
That first Crown is killing me.
That shining dust cap glimmering through the all business grill is superb.

Cheers OSS

brigadier.vytas - 2010-08-24 02:11

some very great finds and nice comments, Doc! Never seen a Hitachi 8155 - classic looking little beauty indeed..

docs - 2010-08-24 03:08

Thanks all, appreciate your comments.
I don't think I have that much room for more but you never know :P

driptip - 2010-08-24 21:50

wow amazing man, very lucky.

from.the.ghetto - 2010-08-28 13:35

Doc, blown by the collection, they all look like new, how do you get them like that man? Eek

docs - 2010-08-29 15:53

Hey From the Ghetto, thanks for the compliments.
Some of the boxes have marks on them just nothing too bad. The Crown 850 has some marks on the top section but I just clean them up as best I can with a bit of elbow grease and mostly a light polish. I think when you take pictures of them out in the open they look bright and clean but none of them are blemish free to be honest.

mellymelsr - 2010-08-29 23:01

Wow! That is a very nice collection you have there. Love the look of those Crowns.

docs - 2010-09-16 07:59

The Crown CSC-950ML. This has a few differences to the standard 950's seen around. This one has a power button on top and an extra tape type function switch. The radio dial and switch quotes VHF instead of FM. this is a rare one and the sound quality is superb.

docs - 2010-09-16 08:01

Phillips D8614 is a smallish/medium sized stereo but has superb sound quality and a really nice tape deck mechanism. If you can get one of these I advise you to do so, they are usually cheap as chips.

lav.loo - 2010-09-16 08:56

glad you like it DOCS Big Grin

lav.loo - 2010-09-16 14:22

The 850 is my best-sounding 1-piece. I used Blue Magic metal polish creme on the top trim, to get rid of all that dirty clear coat or whatever it is. Now it looks like polished aluminum.

docs - 2010-09-17 03:09

Cheers Reli, I'll try and search some of that stuff out.
LL this model comes with a few different handles for some reason, all black like this, silver ended with gray plastic and silver ended with black plastic.

lav.loo - 2010-09-17 03:50

ahh right, glad you have told me that cos i never knew, cheers DOCS Wink

docs - 2010-09-18 07:04

New arrival. An absolutely beautiful Toshiba RT-S932 in fully working order. This one has gorgeous sound quality and the remote control is just simply DROOL! I love it.

Extremely COOL!
Stereo too, most of these are mono.

docs - 2010-10-06 13:20

Thanks for all the comments guys.
A new one in the house today the Panasonic RX-CT980, superb sounding box for peanuts.

lav.loo - 2010-10-06 13:51

there's no denying the quality and sound on that box, great stuff DOCS congrats Wink

docs - 2010-10-08 11:13

Cheers LL.

Another one fresh in the house. A beauty Sharp GF-9595. This one is a pic out of the box and has the usual deck issue that will be repaired. It was sold with a faulty tuner but putting batteries in the back makes it work perfectly.

lav.loo - 2010-10-09 02:57

very nice DOCS, love the led section on this one, congrats on another sharp classic Wink

docs - 2010-10-10 13:32

Thought I would create a few nice pics of the Crown, photoshop is hardly intuitive.

walkgirl - 2010-10-10 14:14

Wow those boomboxes look good enough to eat Big Grin

docs - 2010-10-11 09:03

A new entry in the collection today.
The mother of all AKA boxes. This one is the Radiotone BlueStar RRC 1000. It has a nice crisp sound and it goes loud, holding onto clarity. Very nice box this one in great condition and original strap. This one was so well packed by the ebay seller that I was absolutely shocked. Styrofoam peanuts, void fillers, new strong box, polystyrene inserts, the works. As a result this one arrived in perfect condition 100% working.
