My previously unseen collection! lots of pics . . . updated 07-2011

kennedy - 2010-09-18 15:06

After many months of thinking about posting my collection, I finally found time to dig most of them out, dust em' off and get out the camera.

A few of you have been asking me for sometime about pics, (Lav', G'man and Walkgirl) and now I've done it so now y'all can get off my back!! Wink

I would say I've got a few nice ones, and a bunch of not so rare/special boxes but I've decided to stick pretty much all of em up for you to see anyway. My collection represents about 3 years of collecting, over which time I've never really paid much money for a boombox, just got lucky or searched them out in the wild . . .

So . . . .
Introducing (in no particular order), Kennedy's previously unseen collection! Cool

Hitachi TRK-8290e - Nice feature packed all rounder . . .

Hitachi TRK-8155e - One of my favourite Hitachi's in minty condition . . .

Hitachi TRK-8080e - Picked this up for a couple of quid a couple of years ago, nice condition and solid build quality . . .

Hitachi TRK-8000e - Nothing special, but man it's heavy for it's size - what did they put in these things!

Hitachi TRK-3D80e - I prefer classic looking boxes but I can't bring myself to part with this one - Awesome sound and near perfect condition . . .

Saisho STR 7070 - As plastic as they come, but for some reason I never get bored of lookin at this cheapy . . .

Fidelity SCR10 - This small/mid size box sounds alright, and I think it looks kinda cool . . .

Panasonic RX-F32L - with removed grills and a few scratches but works and sounds nice for it's size. Would like a mint one if I get the chance . . .

Panasonic RX-4933L - Vertical tuner dial on this is cool

Panasonic RX-5100F - A bit grubby but this box has seen a lot of drunken camping trips. Good solid sound.

JVC RC-656LB - Mint condition, and great sound. Very under-rated box.

JVC PC-3 - HEAVY box, and sound to match. Fully working but the speakers have been replaced, they are now 2 way Alpine speakers . . .

JVC PC-150 - Mint Mint Mint, apart from the dis-coloured speakers this looks like it was made yesterday . . .

Sanyo M-X315L - Mint condition fully workin . . .

Sanyo M WS400L - Love this even though it's tiny and er . . red, minty condition

Sanyo M WS700L - Got this Free, not really my thing but it's alright . . .

Sanyo M 4500K - Really like the design of this, in good condition and good sound . . .

Sharp GF-9191 - Love all the GF's and this is one of the best in my collection . . .

Sharp GF-9090 - Or should I say VZ-9090! - this had knackered speakers so I threw in the red cones from a VZ-2000 which are bigger. Sounds okay and I think they suit the box . . .

Sharp GF-8989 - Classic looks, and this one is in sweet condition. The buttons and dials are super smooth with no movement, it's barely been used. Sound is spot on . . .

Sharp GF-8989 No.2 - Another nice one, great sound and fully working . . .

Sharp GF-555 - These are under-rated, I got this minty mint one for a tenner and was blown away by the weight and quality, good bass too.

Philips D8714 - I know there's not that many of these around and believe it or not it was my first boombox that I got 3 years ago. I listen to this everyday, it's really great build quality compared to some of the later Philips models . . .

Philips D8444 - Completely mint, great looks, average performance . . .

Philips D8304 'Moving Sound' - I'm missing the strap for this if anyone can help out . .

Philips D8008 roller (2) - Not really my thing but it's cool for what it is. I might stick this up for sale . . .

Ferguson 3T18 - Picked this up 2 weeks ago cheap, I haven't got around to cleaning it yet . . .

Sharp 5p-37G - Huge heavy TV boombox, needs cleaning and a little work . . .

and finally this which clearly isn't a boombox but is a cool system to crank up when it's party time . . .

Sharp VZ-3500 Vertical Record Player System

Cheers for checkin my humble collection out.

KENNEDY Smile

kennedy - 2010-09-18 15:18

GF-9090 with chrome caps looks MUCH MUCH better than original one, now the box looks like... she is "alive" Smile Nice one.

lav.loo - 2010-09-19 11:56

I Agree i love the 9191 too it,s one of my faves, but i think the black caps let it down slightly Frown anyway back on topic, great collection KND Nod Yes Wink

brigadier.vytas - 2010-09-19 12:05

what a great collection! Keep it unreal:]

richard.heijnen - 2010-09-19 13:51

Nice stuff you've got! I own the D8714 as well as the D8444, the 8444 has too much bass, thanks to the big woofer. The 8714 sounds okay, i hope to find its big brother, wich looks kind of the same, but is black and has a digital tuner. Really like your Hitachi TRK-8290e, what a clean mean machine!!

muto - 2010-09-21 10:57

Love your Hitachis and other radios. Great pictures I Agree

sinister - 2010-09-21 11:03

very nice stuff. dont get rid of the 3D80, i sold mine and regret it ever since...... Frown

2steppa - 2010-09-21 12:15

agree all the way with 2steppa-
your 9090 looks beautiful !!

retro.addict - 2010-09-21 12:50

That's an awesome collection! Thanks for sharing! I'm most impressed with the GF-9090 with custom VZ-2000 woofers. I have a '9090 with the standard woofers and have always thought the black dustcaps looked unique. After seeing yours with chrome caps, I'm considering swapping its speakers for the ones in my broken '8989!

brigadier.vytas - 2010-09-21 13:39

btw, that Saisho (nice color scheme) looks like a Toshiba RT-120S, or Continental GA 4000 "a.k.a".

retro.addict - 2010-09-21 16:16

The Saisho's red trims around the woofer grilles reminds me of my Hitachi TRK-3D2.

kennedy - 2010-09-23 06:24

Guys, thanks for all the positive comments Big Grin

Big love for the humble GF-9090 with VZ cones! I did that mod' sometime ago. I had to remove some plastic on the inside of the case to make them fit but they went in okay. The VZ cones look cool but I'm not sure they are the best upgrade for performance. I'm sure Sharp made the VZ -2000 a bit short on bass so not to interfere with the playing performance of the vertical record deck, so I don't think they are as powerful as they could have been . . . I may be wrong.

I foolishly chucked out the rest of the VZ-2000 because it was pretty beaten up, but if I had known what I know now I would have kept it or parted it out, I remember it was mostly functional and had at least 3 original sliders! Still the passing of one box has gave life to another . . . R.I.P old and beaten VZ-2000. Frown

I think the plan now is to sell all the smaller and cheaper quality boxes as well as possibly the PC-3, to have a smaller collection of really nice ones. With the sale of 10 or so boxes I hope to get money towards something like a GF-777, Crown CSC 850, JVC M60, Sanyo MX920,maybe a lasonic or other chromed up black box or something else kinda big and with classic boombox looks Nod Yes
It's all about the money though so I'll have to see what I can afford when the time comes. Roll Eyes

blinddarm - 2010-09-23 08:39

oh my god, i like your collection

ghettoman - 2011-06-23 05:57

only just spotted this thread myself,Cooool Collection man !! i like the pc3..i used to have one myself in the 90s,but the bass has foam rott, and lack of internet i could'nt find any new foams,so i gave the box away..

andyboombox - 2011-06-25 01:28

great collection my friend-im open to some trades if you like-not that you would want to part with them lol

kennedy - 2011-06-25 04:00

Hello chaps, cheers for resurrecting my collection post, it's been hidden away for some time now . . .

Cheers for positive comments, I have several more boxes in my collection now so I need to update this with new pics soon, I picked up a stunner recently so can't wait to get pics up of that.

Troyster, I will be parting with a few boxes soon but the D8714 and 8444 will be staying with me I'm afraid.

Beanie Man, crazy that you mentioned the pc3. I had it stored away since the pics were taken above but got it out a few days ago for a play. I forgot how good this sounded man, although mine isn't running standard speakers as mine suffered the same foam rot at some point and were replaced. I'll be holding on to this one as well though I'd like to get the original speakers back.

Andy, some of the above will be up for trade and sale but probably not the ones that everyone will want, but as I say I have more now so there might still be a couple worth trading.

Cheers, KND

andyboombox - 2011-06-27 05:30

believe it or not kennedy i like the ferguson 3t18-just got one of those sanyo m-x315 s myself for 7 quid-all working and mines mint too!glad i got it cos i wrecked one i had trying to repair it!there are others in your collection i like too kennedy, mate!

retro - 2011-06-27 15:28

Philips D8444 - Completely mint, great looks, average performance . . .

Very nice collection you have there kennedy, although I was suprised to read the comment on the Philips D8444. I would have expected more from that box.

ghettoman - 2011-06-27 16:45

Retro,i did have a couple of D8444 a while ago,i agree, they sound ok but not brilliant, definately not as good as something like the Aiwa 880..on mine, the radio sounded ok,tape sounded average, but it did sound alot better when playing an mp3 player through it..i was going to try a speaker change on one of mine but they were a weird shape, like eptagon shape,in uk we call it 50p shape..so i could'nt fit any in..

Kennedy..have you still got the origonal Pc3 bass speakers ? i think its best you get rid of that pc3,send it up to manchester,i know someone that will take care of it

andyboombox - 2011-06-29 03:17

yeah kennedy, beanie mans a good lad-send him your pc3 and while your at it drop that d8444 philips off at mine-illhave a pop at it lol

lav.loo - 2011-06-29 11:04

Yeah cool box Andy, I don't really think of Ferguson's as being that great in general but then this one has got nice features and a cool set of switches. Best feature for me is the digital tuner readout above the Bass/Treble contols, looks cool as.

I think that's the thing with this box Retro, you expect more from such a cool looking box with that huge woofer, but it doesn't really deliver that much punch when it comes to it. I might have been a bit unfair, it sounds okay and it's definitely a keeper.

I don't have the original speakers else I'd have been trying my hand at re-foaming them. I may change the speakers again if I find something better than what is fitted. It's got a buzzing transformer/power pack as well so I'd like to get that to shut the f*@k up too! Again, this is a keeper for now

kennedy - 2011-07-04 12:14

HERE WE GO THEN, PICS OF MY NEWEST BOXES.

Some simple ones, some fixer-uppers and couple of nice ones too . . . . enjoy

First off, my D8304 moving sound box again but now with the strap so thought I should take another pic . . .

Hitachi 3D88 - Got this for free. It's fully operational but got quite a few paint marks and a few scuffs. If I find the time I'll strip and clean because this could be a sweet looking 3D . . .

Hitachi TRK-W550e - I like the general looks of this and it sounds pretty good, though a speaker upgrade would help it sing I think. . .

JVC RC-77OLB - I got the call from a mate about a JVC boombox in a rubbish skip, you know what went through my hopeful mind! turned out to be this but hey, it cost me nothing and it works good. . .

Ferguson 3T25 - Simple 3-piecer with tinted cassette doors, needs a little work and cassette belts but cosmetically pretty good . . .

Sanyo C3 - Sweet looking boombox, this is the second one of these I've had and they sound good to me . . .

Sanyo M9923L - Basic boombox with good build quality . . .

Sanyo M9927LG - Basic boombox but bigger and better looking than most cheapy 1-piecers' . . .

Saisho PM-202P - Looks-wise I think this is fairly good, but sound is as you would expect from a Saisho. Good condition this one . . .

AND FINALLY . . .

Sharp GF-777Z - Finally got my hands on one and this one is really awesome condition! Score! Sound is good and fully working, have listened to this everyday since I picked it up. What more can I say, these are brilliant man . . .

There you go, my collection officially updated.

KND.

It was an ebay box I picked up 3 or 4 months ago, it was very local to me so I had the chance to go and view it and test it before bidding. There was only one pic in the listing and very little detail so I didn't know what to expect, but it turned out to be really good and at that point I thought I had a good chance based on the poor listing possibly not attracting as many bidders as it could of done.

I have been watching these sell on ebay and on forums for a couple of years so I had a pretty good idea of what I should be paying for a mint one and I think I did good, plus I didn't have to add postage on top or worry about it getting wrecked on the way! Lets just say low hundreds is what I paid . . .

If I come to sell it I'll be after mid hundreds haha

KND

bendycat - 2011-07-05 18:27

bison - 2011-08-04 12:03

nice collection kennedy, few on my wish list there, and that vz speaker mod is just ace mate!

chris.hendrie - 2011-10-05 09:23

I bought a TRK8155e brand new in Glasgow Scotland around 1980. I was 14 and it was the most expensive purchase I'd made up to that point. I loved that boombox and was incredibly proud of it. But then it was stolen - I'm pretty sure I know by whom - and I never managed to get it back. I've searched for years to find another, but no dice. I'd pay handsomely for a nice example.

ghettoman - 2011-10-05 09:41

Chris, welcome to the site mate, there is a couple of scotty collectors on this site..and hey..check this out,,just the box your looking for,he prefures pick up but looks like he would ship it for a small fee

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/port...;hash=item2c5fa4c22d

chris.hendrie - 2011-10-05 10:13

Wow! It didn't show up in search for me. No space between Hitachi and TRK. Thanks fir the tip, Beanie.

electron1100 - 2011-10-05 11:57

Very Very nice collection, all of them have their own unique style.

Like you I have a big soft spot for the Sharp GF-9090, way back in 1976 it was my first ghetto blaster, it cost £200.00 then from a catalogue and over the years i have managed to keep one on the go.

Your right about the VZ speakers not having a large bass output due too feedback problems with the turntable, but they do look really smart

I often re-cap my portables with audio grade caps and re-wire the speakers, this often helps with the overall sound.

I have been buying cassette heads off ebay for 99pence each and so far they have all worked perfectly in the sharps

(New BT62 Cassette player magnetic tape heads) just a thought whilst i am here.

Thanks for posting these great pix.

Gary

Ps Do you have any mono sharp radio/cassettes?

mrkeith - 2012-06-25 08:16

Awesome. I had GOT THE Hitachi trk 8290 when I was 17. That was my First Love. I Would Love to Have another 1

boomboxace - 2012-06-25 23:29

soul.music - 2012-11-07 13:25

Hi, I used to have a Ferguson 3T18 back in the eighties. The FM radio on it was great and I loved the digital radio frequency read out and the LED's. A really nice looking well made boombox. The tape player I remember sounded best with chrome tapes. It was quite powerful BUT the woofers were only 4 ohms so they distorted very easily when the volume and bass were turned up. I was going to replace the woofers with 8 ohms speakers but never got round to it. I no longer have it but if one in good condition came up on Ebay I would'nt mind getting it for nostalgias sake.
