Super Power Compo SOUNDMACHINE

viennasound - 2010-10-21 10:33

Found it offered in the net for the price of an happy meal at Macy´s Big Grin
But the bad thing: other side of austria. Confused

But the seller was willing to ship it and pack it well. clap

Yesterday the parcel arrived.
Hm, looking a bit small for that monster machine... hm

Aaaargh! I think this is the worst packing i have ever got... never

But sometimes wonders can come true.
The box survived without any damage!!! excited

what a dinosaur Big Grin

the biggest PHILIPS compo

they called it "the super power compo" lol!

but idiotic: for this battleship only a single deck

comparo with the 170 not worthy

... the CONIC....

... and the moving sound

backside
you can see the wooden speakers

and now i did something, PHILIPS should have done!
The cheaper speakers to the cheaper unit!

and the better speaker to the better unit! Angel

fits perfect
only the speakerholder-screws must be changed! Roll Eyes

Your D8734 looks awesome with the D8644's speakers! cheers

viennasound - 2010-10-21 21:11

Thanks! Smile
I will keep them with the mixed speakers.

btw: the seller was near to throw the compo away.
Reason? He had lost the power cable!!! Eek
Simply crazy...

samsnite - 2010-10-22 10:28

strange... the speakers are identical. The positioning of the tweeters are the same on both speakers... hmm

I Agree with RA totally, good idea changing the speakers VS, love seeing the philips boxes being saved Nod Yes congrats on that monster box Bopping

zx280 - 2010-10-22 15:38

VS does it again! Vienna here I come!

I had this Philips unit a long time ago - the first soundcheck was very disapointing for me, because the most Philips midsize units sound better than this big monster.

Also I don't know which designer of the Philips team had his hand on this project - compare to the 8814 (my favorite Philips bbox and the most beautiful 1 piecer I know), 8614, 8718, ... this is the uglyst one of all Philips ...

But I know that you are a fan of the Philips bboxes so I hope that you are lucky with this one ...

Best wishes
TOM

It seems quite a few Philips detatchable units are the same, most probably for cost-cutting reasons. For example the D8534's speaker enclosures are the same: the Philips logo on the top is on same side, not opposite so they're symmetrical. My D8534 is like this. Check the pic of this one on Shizaudio...

viennasound - 2010-10-23 21:41

Yeah, but there is a difference.

Those units with the clips on the backside:
The speakers are exact similar.
Can change left or right
The speakers with the hooks:
Mounting only left or right.

please crazy

Got mine today - found in Gumtree
always wanted one - after seeing it back in 1986

not as bad sounding as VS makes out

makes all Hitachis tremble
and gives me back problems - this thing is mahoosive

viennasound - 2011-12-16 07:53

It is not bad sounding at all.

But i was wondering why they mounted the better wooden speakers on a "cheaper" unit.

ghettoman - 2011-12-16 09:34

Roman i have both of those boxes and comparing the sound, the 8644 sounds loud as hell with plenty of bass, and it weighes a ton,the 8734 sounds "hmm ok" but no way as loud and bassy as the 8644..

but i like the 8734 for its functionality,it has lots of good features and nice feather touch decks,a good set of led's..

i had both of these boxes in the late 80s too,i used to take them out and about with me to the streets and to the park, they ate batteries for fun,the best box for batteries is the crown sz5100,all they have in them is an amp chip,a couple of cheap motors and 2 speakers, not much else in there really,i used some kodak batteries in my crown in around 1987/88 and they lasted a good week blasting almost full volume every night..

claret.badger - 2011-12-17 12:54

The Philips was the best part of 300 quid in 86

wasn't a cheap box retail wise!

ghettoman - 2011-12-18 06:45

what a downer man,if you got it off evilbay, send it back or try and claim on it through paypal,if they did'nt put enough care into packing its their fault mate,do it !!

deliverance - 2011-12-18 06:59
