My Newest: A Lovely Sanyo M-X960K (Big Ben)

gluecifer - 2009-02-09 23:01

I'd been reading about Big Ben's for a while on here, and decided I must add one eventually to the collection when I first started making my 'Needs List'. And thanks to all the planets being in alignment I managed to score one! Locally too, so I ended up getting her all paid and delivered for about US$135, which pleased me immensely. And she's a FINE specimen too:

Needs some attention to the deck, which isn't getting any power to engage the motor, I'm thinking a replacement motor is needed or something like a leaf switch or some such needs cleaning as manually moving the drive wheel gets all the functions working as they should.

But the sound. The SOUND! Geezum crow, I really wasn't prepared for the sheer quality and range.
Sure it's got the very impressive bass with the Super Woofer, but the overall clarity is just astounding. The tweeters and midrange woofer are so crisp, detailled and lively that it makes you wonder if it really is a portable.

The effort put into how this unit sounds floors me with everything I throw at via line-in. This should be in everyone must-have list as the quality of sound reproduction and overall design set it apart from every other one-piece ever made.

I know theres much appreciation for the Big Ben on here, I know it's nothing a lot of you haven't heard before but I honestly wasn't prepared to love this radio as much as I've found I do, she truly is a marvel of aesthetic and sound design.

Can't WAIT to get the deck on her going and taking her to the streets.

Rock On.

Congrats on the nice Sanyo.
Probably one of the best sounding ones.
BTW when is someone just going to come right out and say you know what (It sounds better than an M-90). Laugh Out Loud
The M-90 is not the end all of boomboxes.

jameswp67 - 2009-02-10 09:01

Yes. its one of my favorites as well! Congrats! Great radio, great price! Big Grin

Very cool Gluecifer!!! I'd love to have one of those badboys! Eek

jvc.floyd - 2009-02-10 12:26

those are bad a$$ boxes shaped more like a tv set ,i once saw a full truck load of these at a swap meet back in the 80's they were stacked up into pyramids there had to be at least 30 big bens in the boxes with one un packed and plugged in to diplay the unit , i ended up buying my first m90 from the guy selling the big bens i still think about that boombox guy just selling many different brands of boomboxes out of a box truck it was so cool and his prices were very fair to me.

jlf - 2009-02-10 12:57

Awesome Sanyo!!!

I Agree

At lower volumes...BIG BEN has a warmer, richer sound Wink

redbenjoe - 2009-02-10 15:52

at no volumes --does it come close Smile

baddboybill - 2009-02-10 16:37

This also reminds me when I was 12 or 13 a schoolmate told a buddy and I that him and another kid got into a box car and threw a sh-t load of bbx off into a wooded area so we went searching for days to find at least one. We never found them and to this day I wonder if he was lying Confused

gluecifer - 2009-02-10 18:24

Thanks brothers!

Will get the deck looked at asap, hoping the tape playback is up to the quality of the rest of her.

Rock On.

masterblaster84 - 2009-02-10 19:34

Glue I noticed your treble knob is turned all the way down, that's the one thing this box has in abundance. I never turn my Treble knob past zero, I think it would cut my eardrums if the Treble was cranked all the way up.
Big Grin

gluecifer - 2009-02-10 21:49

haha yeah, It's actually back up to zero now, I had it down for what I was listening to at the time which seemed a tad harsh at the volume I had it at. Like many here I've found the 12 o'clock position for treble and 3 o'clock position for Super Woofer volume and Bass to be a sweetspot that sounds great with everything at a medium volume.

It is truly amazing the treble range though, just like you say, it can brighten the dullest and flattest recording.

"I never turn my Treble knob past zero, I think it would cut my eardrums if the Treble was cranked all the way up."

hahah indeeed, BigBen's could make for excellent torture devices if one intended to.

Rock On.
