not Golden but definitely "dated"...

While out box hunting,I found this Sony CFD-444.It is rated at 22w.The "CD" graphic on each speaker and vertical loading CD player give it a very dated look.I couldn't resist buying it.

Though not immediately apparent, the inner panel carrying the CDs skip and play mode buttons has been pushed in from the boxes faceplate. It will play CDs but I have no controls other than stop and start.Hopefully this piece will be easy to snap back into place.

If a box is particularly enticing,I might get it even if it is an egg. This, however,is very rare. When a box is not from the golden era,I am usually more discriminating when deciding to purchase. If a box has an aux input, this weighs heavily in favor of my getting it.Also it has to be able to go to a decently loud volume. This box passed both of those tests.

The CFD-444 has nice sound when using the EQ to tailor its sound. There is a CD out and line-in on the back of the unit. The line-in has excellent sensitivity.Bass is adequate if you run the bass slider all the way up.The EQ will also impart brightness to the highs if properly tweaked. This is not a box to impress people with sheer volume. However, its more than adequate for most indoor uses.

I've been wanting a box with a vertical loading CD for a while. They were only made for a very short time and look dated and quite odd to me.It's always great to find an unusual box at a bargain price.

I took it to work last night. It will actually go pretty loud compared to some other comparable boxes in my collection. It works quite well for rock as you can equalize a bright "in your face" sound with sharp and well defined guitar sounds. Its tweeters are the flat plate type.

The bass is O.K. with the slider all the way up but certainly not abundant.Of course the cones are only about 3 1/2 inches. There's enough bass to make dance music listenable. However the speakers will buzz pretty badly when certain bass frequencies are sustained. They are made of lighter grade plastic and actually have cardboard back panels. Some work to rid this vibration would help greatly for playing bass heavy music at high volume with the bass EQ slider maxxed out.Overall I really like what you can do with the sound.

That is a nice radio Jovie, and I even
believe I have a picture somewhere in one
of my old sony brochures!

When I find the picture I post it Smile
