Local find KTO JC-129

smokinendo - 2008-09-15 14:19

OK I had a CRAZY Boombox filled weekend LOL

First on Saturday my wife agreed to let me set up the boxes for a group photo, then the mail carrier stopped by with the belts for my 20/20 which made me really want it in the photos so I spent the first 2 hours reassembling it. After I got it all buttoned up and tested I started dragging boxes down from the attic (not a fun task) We stayed up till about 1:00 am taking pics and looking the boxes so I didn't have a chance to put them away before we hit the sack. The next morning there were a lot of boxes out and an extra child in the house so me going to the flea market was (I thought) out of the question. However I couldn't sleep ! I had Boomboxes on the brain MAJOR ! I decided that I'd take my youngest and go anyway LOL My wife was glad anyway as the boys will just sit and play alone and my daughter will nag her all morning till she finally gets up.

We headed to the mart about 7:30 and walked the entire place twice but I was trying to stall so my wife could get some rest before I returned with my little one and started the day. We continued to walk and probably did four laps before I walked passed a vendor who was a late arrival, her table was packed with cloths and baby toys but beneath the clothes there was what appeared to be a foot from a boombox that was sitting on it's back. I pulled the cloths back and WHAM ! ! A HUGE KTO JC-129

How much for the Radio ? I asked

Her reply much to my delight Smile $10

It needs a hella cleaning but looks like it will clean up pretty well with some time. It's missing on aerial and one complete antenna as well as the original speaker grills but other then that it's all there. With a little TLC this will be a pretty dope box

Check it out and LMK what you think ?

Brian

after some test cleaning to see if the chrome was salvageable it looks promising

Funny how the graphics make the very most of every feature - keeping the whole fascia busy, despite the relatively low feature-count.

This sort of thing is exactly why my boy is going to LOVE his i931... Smile

...& of course, always a grin to read "output 150W" right next to "power consumption 30W"
it's a miracle(!)

tshorba - 2008-09-16 03:16

strange tweeter wave guides on the box, left and right seperate eq and best of all homemade tuner scale Wink ..sweet deal..

gluecifer - 2008-09-16 04:07

Top find! That's one hell of a good lookin' radio.

Is there only the one row of LED's across the top to indicate everything or are there more that aren't obvious?

Hot front AUX input too! Great pick up indeed.

Rock On.

Cool great score !
For a hamilton how can ya go wrong!

jovie - 2008-09-16 07:24

Very impressive find and probably pretty rare!It looks like it will put out a powerful sound!I've been wanting a larger oldschool box with a multiband EQ for some time.Though I prefer the look of simple pots,an EQ pretty much guarantees you'll be able to find the type of sound you prefer from a box.

I wish my Prosonic PQR-9962 had a graphic equalizer to bring out the mids/highs more.Though it's a large classic design, theres not enough natural presence to these ranges. It's treble pot doesn't do a whole lot either.I can't say that about my only KTO, a 1090/7070.That one really screams though it also only has simple bass and treble controls!

Again, nice find!I'd love to hear it!

oldskool69 - 2008-09-16 18:15

The early bird gets the worm! Way to go! Smile

Nice one!!! Smile

The letters P.M.P.O. right on the lable. Big Grin
Usually its only on the stickers.

smokinendo - 2008-09-19 10:21

Thanks Everyone Smile It's cleaning up really well, I still have to pull the tuner board and clean all the sliders but it's looking pretty good. Anyone know where to find some replacement grills ? Maybe some place sells grill material in a sheet that I can make my own out of ? Any suggestions ? by the way this thing is SUPER LOAD but has no Bass what so ever at all !

Here's how it looks right now

monolithic - 2008-09-20 14:05

She cleans up nice! Cool

Sucks to hear about the weak bass response tho, but at least it'll look great as a display box. Wink

Congrats! Smile

ghettogas - 2008-09-21 01:58

thats one rockin beast Brian. Nice clean up!!!!

beatbox - 2008-09-23 14:54

Wow, I have NEVER seen one of those!!! What a find! I'd leave the grills of man. Everything about the box is extreme, why dull it down?

Cool

smokinendo - 2008-10-03 16:48

Thanks Guys ! Smile Gas I own you a return PM (sorry things have been CRAZY around here for the last month) I got your tires and I'll try to get you a pic over the next week or so

beatbox... you know the more examples I find of this radio or similar models the less I'm thinking that the grills are missing ?

I haven't seen one with grills yet ?

Anyone know the story ?

There's even a similar one on eBay with the original box and they are even pictured on the box front with no grills ? These grills (if they ever existed) are the type that slide through small slots in the box and the tab style tips that stick through are bent down. This means that the average Joe would need to take the box apart just to remove the grills ? This seems highly unlikely although it rises the new question in my mind

If none of them came with grills why add the holes and recessed track where it would appear the grills would seat ?

seems strange but I think I'm going to leave it bee...

Oh and some movie we watched the other day had a similar model in black with no grills (filmed in the 80's)

Can anyone make any sense of this ?

jlf - 2008-10-03 19:57

The Conion C-126 is the same way... yet another Conion, I had it too but cant remember the model number right now.... it had the same slots for the grill, but no grill.

I guess its an easy way to make it look different enough to make it an entirely new model?! Remove the grills, change the color, and the marketing department just expanded the product line!

Not sure why else they would do it?!

kid.sensation - 2008-10-04 03:34

agreed.

The c-126 is the same way.slots where you insert the grill.

I took the ones off my c-126 and i tell ya it was very hard work to get em off!the small parts that lead into the slots are bent and glued on the inside.

I guess, if anyone removed em back then they did not care about and maybe destroyed the grills so that they can't be replaced.

One last thing tough. If you open the box look careful to the inner side of the slots. If there is black glueish stuff at the slots than you'll know for sure that there were grills.
if not, the box came without them from factory.

here is my c-126 without clothes:

the black glue-ish stuff can't be removed easily and i think if someone did it to yours back in time they won't make all that work to have it damn clean on the inside

but at the end i agree with the others too to leave this unit like it is Cool

fresh box bro!
