Overwhelmed with JOY C100F

smokinendo - 2008-09-08 20:47

After only a short period of time on this site it was painfully apparent that I could not live without a Conion C100F. The price of a decent unit seemed reasonable enough to explain to my wife and it seemed like something I could handle Smile I love the RCM90 and would love to someday own one but doubt I will ever pull the trigger on eBay due to the current market value. The C100 on the other hand was all over the place... some where selling for $1200/$1500 and some were doing less then $500.

The first attempt to purchase one was TAguy's and I only had like $475 in my account that week so I bid $400 and lost (I believe I was the second highest bidder) This was frustration on an even higher scale because Frank was a member here and I knew I was dealing with a stand up guy just by reading his post. I thought that I missed an opportunity of a lifetime, especially after I had more money in the account and asked Frank if it was still available for sale only to find out it was gone Frown

After that I looked for a few weeks and they seemed to be scarce (we all know they come and go...1 week there will be 5 and the next 0)

Anyway last week there were a few that came up and I wasn't waiting any longer LOL I was going to hit the buy it now for $565 + $65 shipping ? I think that's what it was originally ? but I wanted to see a few more pics due to some damage disclosed in the auction. When he got back to me and it was just a corner to one of the feet I was on board. He even adjusted the price down to $540 shipped

It got here lightning FAST ! I bought the thing on Wednesday and had it on my doorstep Friday with exceptional packing.

After a short inspection and bench test I disconnected my GF777 and retired it to the Attic space where it will spend the rest of it's days in it's original box... well at least until the addition is complete and I have a place to display them all

Whelp... LMK What you think ?

The box was bigger then my 3 year old daughter and her 4 year friend LOL

One right after I pulled it from the box (cheeseball smile... I couldn't help it)

One in the house all powered up

and one of all the control panel

Cosmetically it's in great shape with a few minor exceptions but it's in need some work electronically. I'll post details in the tech forum soon

Thanks for checking it out guys

Brian

oldskool69 - 2008-09-08 20:53

WEEEEEELLLLL DOGGIE! (To quote the great Jed Clampett) You got yourself a purty one there! Congrats! Smile

transamguy1977 - 2008-09-08 20:54

WOW bro ya did good.
Congrats on the new addition!!!!
She lookin clean Nod Yes
Are'nt they sweet????and blingy????and friggin loud???? Laugh Out Loud

transamguy1977 - 2008-09-08 20:57

BTW I have a fix for that missing trim.
Its called sand the glue off the surface and flatten some foil tape down on it,
Nobody will know the difference.
except me Wink
Seriously one of mine was missing it and I posted a thread on how I did it.
It came out nice and matched closely.

smokinendo - 2008-09-08 21:06

Thanks Guys Smile

The seller said he sent me a replacement trim piece and I also have a bunch of thin brunched aluminum trim paneling for custom car application but I think the foil tape might be the easiest route ? I'm going to do something about it that's for sure

and yes it is LOUD !

I'm having an issue with the deck ? At first it opened and closed, I even had a tape in the deck drawer then when nothing worked on the deck I removed the cassette and it was the last time it would eject ? It's stuck closed for now

I have to take it apart which is cool (I planned to do it anyway) It needs belts too

smokinendo - 2008-09-08 21:12

Oh and ever since it stopped ejecting properly it also has constant power ? Now when I plug it in it comes right on and the power button just makes the tuner lens lights come on and the other lights (They don't work with the power button off but sound comes out ?) Kind of puzzling if you ask me but I think the radio is maybe getting a constant power signal because maybe the play button is engaged also causing the eject feature to malfunction ?

Any theories ?

redbenjoe - 2008-09-08 21:12

looks extra nice , endo -
-and great photos --

now --THATS a keeper !!!!!!!!!!!!

sinister - 2008-09-08 21:12

very nice. well done. Cool

redbenjoe - 2008-09-08 21:17

oh - and the theory is that it now 'THINKS' its in play or record (with the heads up) --so thats why its on constant power ,and thats why you cant eject it ---
no biggie (if you were ramon Smile -- or good at this stuff)

smokinendo - 2008-09-08 21:18

Thanks Guys ! No good outside scenic stuff yet Ira but I got one with me at my computer LOL

Congrats Smokin Endo!!!! It looks awesome and they are LOUD!!!!!! Eek Eek

928gts - 2008-09-09 05:50

Most 100's I see on the 'bay have some sort of wear to them cosmetically be it dirt, print wearing off or what have you but yours looks really solid. Congratulations on finding a good one!

smokinendo - 2008-09-09 06:40

Thanks guys I appreciate it Smile

Another little story that was pretty ironic and made me laugh a little

In addition to the boomers I also collect a bunch of other stuff, classic cars, car audio, bikes, Hot Wheels, records, Tyco slots and a bunch of other stuff LOL Anyway I have a small collection of early 90's Rap CD's and I've been looking for "Special Ed Youngest in charge" for like ever now ! When I was a kid it was the very first CD I had ever bought and I remember every detail from that day. I bought Special Ed and Poor Righteous Teachers Holy Intellect the same day from Sam Goody at the Echelon Mall in Voorhees NJ. They both came in printed boxes that were the same as the CD cover only longer (like the length of two CD's) Well as years went on these two CD's got a lot of play and they got moved around a lot so the Special Ed eventually got lost and the PRT got broken Frown I still have the original PRT disk and it will even play a few tracks but it's cracked in three spots LOL.

not long after my original Special Ed CD got lost I went back to Sam Goody only to learn that it was out of print. At this point I had no idea where to look, in the mid 90's it was hard to find used CD's. It wasn't until just recently that I started to replace some of the CD's I had as a kid and I was having great luck In fact the one day at the flea market I found over 30 CD's for under a buck a piece and they were all early 90's east coast rap (it was a great score trust me) but no special ed. I had begun to think I would never find one. I watched them on eBay for months and they were doing $35+ on most every single auction (I guess I should of saw this coming after my life experience with this CD) I checked used CD's shops and just about everywhere that you can buy used music until finally this week I caved ! I told my wife "I need this CD ! I'm going to win one" Her reply was "Go Ahead ! I'll buy it just to stop you from b!tc#ing about it any longer"

so I checked eBay and there were two auctions ending that very same night, I bid $25 on the first auction and lost it by pennies so I bid $65 on the second one and won two CD's for $10 LOL eBay is CRAZY ! The part that I thought you guys would find ironic was the day after I finally won my Special Ed CD I won the Conion and I took a look at at the sellers other items only to see that he had a copy of the CD for sale the whole time HA HA I probably could of got the CD and the Box at the same time (I think that would of made me pee in pants though)

sorry to ramble on so long just thought I'd share

Brian

devoltoni - 2008-09-09 06:53

OK Brian, very nice and mint box, congrats man. Smile

retro.addict - 2008-09-09 08:02

Awesome, Smokin_Endo! Eek

The C-100F is the ULTIMATE classic box IMO! Nod Yes It may not be of the highest quality, but it's one of the biggest and I think it's the best looking! Cool

jimski - 2008-09-09 14:02

Nice box, glad you finally got 1.

kid.sensation - 2008-09-09 14:11

absolutely brilliant Brian!!

It looks very nice and i think one can say you did a damn good job on adding this one to your fine collection Smile

even with the trim missing it looks friggin mint!

Enjoy it bro!

monolithic - 2008-09-09 14:30

Too bad you'll have to wait, but when your Special Ed CD arrives, you can play "I Got It Made" on your new Conion. Wink

Congratulations, Smokin_Endo! Cool

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

On a somewhat related note... It's not like the Conion you have is any more special than the next members', but I have to admit that for the very first time - after seein' you with yours - I seriously want one of those. Nod Yes

smokinendo - 2008-09-10 08:00

Thanks Guys Smile

RA I also think it's the best "looking" box ever, then again I LOVE the bigger flashier "GhettoBlaster" type boxes. I think the build quality is superior to a lot of my boxes but I think the M70 and 777 are built best of the ones I own

Thanks Jimski Smile It wasn't a flea market score but I'm just as excited LOL

Thanks KS It feels good when you get a new box and it's the best box in your collection. The question "Why did I buy this ?" never even crosses your mind. And it is really clean, in fact it's the first box I have ever bought that I didn't have to clean before I could actually look at it and enjoy it. Usually it's hours of cleaning (which I enjoy) before ever taking the time to listen... this one came out of the box and went to the power supply Smile I just can't wait to figure out the little problems ? The cassette A is stuck running either in play mode or fast forward ? Not sure yet but I have to take it apart and figure it out because it's causing the radio to have constant power (that or there are two problems which occurred simultaneously) Anyway now the power button only controls the lights and you have to unplug it just to get it to shut off (and it's still my favorite box LOL) Just can't wait to get it right

Mono I must of screwed up on some of the details there LOL I won the Special Ed CD a few nights before I won the Conion and it actually showed up on Saturday the day after the Conion came. It was the first CD I played through the AUX Big Grin We had the turntable hooked up on Friday and I listened to the Legal LP on wax LOL I love Special Ed

On the Conion... Glad you feel inspired and if you ever want to test drive it before making a decision your welcome to come over to South Jersey anytime and tinker with mine Smile You can bring a few boxes so we can get some group photos. PM me if you ever want to get together and check it out

Brian

jvc.floyd - 2008-09-10 08:25

i have owned two of these i still have one ,i think the reason the power stays on is cos the cassette deck is engaged and the power on off is tied in with the deck so you can press play on the deck without turning on the power ,however if the deck is engaged the power won't shut off until the keys on the deck are fully dis engaged ,you have to basically pull the whole box apart to get to the decks to work on them.

I Agree

jvc.floyd - 2008-09-10 08:31

also make sure you label all those plugs that you disconnect because its easy to get them mixed up as the plugs fit all kinds of different places so i would label the plug and the place where it was disconnected from ,lots of work involved .

smokinendo - 2008-09-10 08:57

That's what I figured thanks for the tip on the labels for the plugs. I want to rip into it but I really want to put my 20/20 back together first. I don't want too many boxes taken apart at one time and my Magnavox is still apart too ? I need more time in a day LOL

Thanks for the tips guys

Wonder if I can be patient or if I'll end up taking it apart tonight LOL

Is there a common problem that caused the cassette keys to malfunction ? Any idea what might of made this happen ? I know it needs belts. Anyone know where to get them and what sizes I need ? Thanks Again Smile This site is a god sent

Brian

peter.griffin - 2008-09-11 10:44

Looks awesome Endo. I was looking at that auction too. But with the "electronics" problems, I was scared off. I'm too scared to work on boomboxesFrown Plus my wifey would have killed meSmile

Congrat's buddySmile I'm sure with everyone's help on this forum, you'll have that thing running like new.

ghettoboom777 - 2008-09-11 11:55

Hi-smokinendo-Nice Conion!
I really like the red lights.
I'd like to get one of these someday-I like bigboxes!

I have an idea for the stuck cassette mechanisms.
It's an old school fix that has worked for me in the past.
Try twisting the pinch roller(the metal thing that spins next to the rubber roller(pinch roller-do this with it powered up and with it in cassette play mode,This may free up the cassette motor and the play mecanism may go back down then.
Just be gentle when you do this so if it starts spinning again don't restrict it when it starts to go again.Just be sure to clean up the capstan and pinch-roller and the head after you have tried this as you will want to get the oil from your fingers off of these parts before you start playing a cassette again.
Try this & good luck, you may have to take the cassette door off to do this if it's too hard to get to.
This is one way you may get it going again without haveing to take it all appart.
Have a great time with your new Conion-Ghettoboom777. Smile Nod Yes

retro - 2008-09-11 17:30

Congrats, looks great.

- 2008-09-11 18:36

can never go wrong with owning a conion Wink

smokinendo - 2008-09-15 07:43

Thanks again guys Smile Still getting used to the fact that I have one of these bad boys LOL OK I popped it open and just disconnected the plug for the Deck 1 play motor. It sounds like the other motor is actually running too LOL I really need to take it apart and check it out. When I disconnected the main motor harness the constant power problem was eliminated but eject is still malfunctioning. I'm going to try to mess with it this week a bit but I wanted to get my Rising back together before I open this one up so this past weekend I put my Rising back together and did a cool group photo. It was fun but didn't come out exactly as I imagined it would.

so I guess more to come when I open it up

Thanks again for all the great comments guys

Brian

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-09-15 16:22

congrats man ! that's an awesome purchase ! !

very happy for you , thanks for the great pictures too ! !

moncheeto - 2008-09-15 17:09

these boxes are great the shear volume just blast everything in its path i love mine and thank God it has the front door that alone can buy you a grail when missing Laugh Out Loud so have fun and yes the issue with the power is likely the cassette deck still in play mode even if the heads are in there rest position its known in a lot of the boxes when the belts are non existent or just slipping of old age Big Grin

- 2008-09-15 18:08

Congrats man the conion sure is a high class machine, the build quality has alot in common with the m90, well done and those picks are sweeeet dude.

redbenjoe - 2008-09-15 18:46

tim - is your own conion running well now ?

ford93 - 2008-09-15 19:25

LOL wow and I thought I was the only one collecting Hotwheels here. I also have some Diecast muscle cars, unbuilt model planes such as the SR-71, F 111, and some Tyco slot cars. I'm still a kid at heart I guess. Nod Yes

jimski - 2008-09-15 19:49

smokin endo spin the big wheel on the mech.. so it will unjam this will stop the motor from spining and will disingage the leaf switch so the power button will work normal again and the deck will eject, more than likely it needs a belt.
Been thru this too many times allready and im sure others have too.

smokinendo - 2008-09-16 06:23

Jim thanks for the tip Smile I'll try it soon and let you know how I made out.

Thanks Again for all the great comments

Ford, I don't collect many Hots as of right now ? In 98-2001 I was heavy into it, 3000+ cars over 250 Treasure Hunts including a complete set of 95's 96's 97's 98's 99's 00's and all of the ones that were out up to the date I sold my collection. I had a guy come over and look at my stuff and offer me $5000 so I caved Frown Kind of wish I still had them all but I've since replaced a lot of it for my son (to keep me from selling them this time we'll just call them his LOL) We've got a bunch of T-hunts and 1st editions but nothing like before. What do you have Redlines, black wall 80's stuff, currents ?

ford93 - 2008-09-16 06:49

I have a few Redlines like Don Prudhomme funny car in metalic gold, special edition Redline Twin Mill in metalic pink, limited edition Hotwheels that are in a clear case, 80's hotwheels, current Black walls and Kyle Petty 4 pack racing set.

smokinendo - 2008-09-16 07:15

I would still love to find some of the originals that I had when I was younger. Some of the 80's blisterpack stuff is WAY more then it was bringing just 10 years ago

Oh and I love the Snake and Mongoose stuff, I'm a huge Drag race fan (Special thanks to Pop for taking me a such a young age) I meet all the Top Fuel drivers when I was kid and it was like meeting A class celebrity's to me

jlf - 2008-09-17 19:49

Totally awesome 100!!!
