my current in use boomboxes.

billpc55 - 2009-04-15 18:58

these are the ones i am using pretty much daily right now.

the dt 707
i just love this boombox it is very nice

these three are pretty cool too. the little panasonic sounds way better than you would expect.
the pc3 needs some love but its really nice too.

jvc m50 that i got for free. well i do need to sort the tape deck, but i have been using it a lot in the last few days since i got it. it is really good. it has a very rich nice sound for a boombox this size.

the most flawless boombox in my collection,it is incredible shape and well it is my favorite one piece boombox that i have. its not the loudest but is is very nice.

just one of the big bad sonys. i dont have the batterypack for it.
it is stunningly loud and gives a couple of the big stereos in the room a pretty good run.

another of the free boomers i got last week, the viking. its pretty cool and it is pretty nice sounding too. i wonder who made these. there is something toshibaesque about it.

it looks nice sounds like ****e candle. i do have a soft spot for it

still one of my absolute favorites the black m9998k i love that boombox. it has such a nice rich sound and it looks so good with the green backlighting on the tuner dial.
the big panny three piece below it has its charms as well

little sony boombox. sounds really good and this one does look pretty nice.
heavy for a smaller boomer

the love it or hate it jvc i love it beacause of its tron looks. the m80 is a neat boombox in my books

a gf6262 not getting much love as of late but i keep it out and give her a go pretty regularly.

monolithic - 2009-04-15 19:12

I like 'em all but LOVE the big Sony! Cool

billpc55 - 2009-04-15 19:17

i have two of them big sonys. they are really cool. i have the remotes for them to boot. one of these days i am going to have to drag them down to the electronics repair place, and get them to give them a going over. they both work but the tape players are out of comish.
the displays on these are the coolest displays. the spectrum display is just really awesome.

redbenjoe - 2009-04-15 19:58

oh that sanyo 9998 !!
so glad you have one of them --

what a great/solid sounding

billpc55 - 2009-04-15 20:10

i love that one. i mean for a long time it was my absolute favorite boombox.
i must confess tho since i got the m50 it has really grown on me.
the sanyo m50 and sk95 all seem to be around the same level.
each of them have there shinny elements to the sound.
i would also say those three boomboxes come from the era where they were built the best.
the radio sections of those three are so fantastic.

viennasound - 2009-04-15 21:08

All are great boxes! Nod Yes
My favourites are the PIONEER and the black SANYO!
Also the JVC M80.

I only have 2 "stationary" boxes.
Normally i take every day another box out of the storage and let it play. Big Grin
No rest - no rust Razz

billpc55 - 2009-04-15 21:20

thanks man.
i can promise if you hear that jvc m50 you would be impressed. it makes that m80 sound like a toy. Big Grin well they are all toys. heheh i have some others tucked aways in the closet and some in other rooms too. i try to use them every now and then.

skippy1969 - 2009-04-16 05:45

Nice units Bill,I love them all! Eek Eek Big Grin

2steppa - 2009-04-16 05:52

That nice Sharp 6262 looks like a hybrid of an 8989 and 9494, perhaps it was made on the cusp of the design changes that took place around that period....?

And that Candle is yet ANOTHER model the same as my Condor box!!

And that Viking was FREE!?? Wow, what a beauty.

Very nice boxes indeed, all of them.

gluecifer - 2009-04-16 06:04

Awesome stuff Bill! Very nice contrast of different styles indeed. I'm quite partial to my M-50 too, she's a performer.

Need one of those Pioneers, very sophisticated looking radio indeed. Thanks for all the pix!

Rock On.

aza - 2009-04-16 06:18

Very nice variety bill.
Yamaha, Pioneer and 9998, have 'em, love 'em !
Was quite a bit of hype a while back about the Sanyo 9998 and it seemed everyone wanted one.

Bill i recently picked up a Sony FH-15R in mint condition. (speakers have rot but) i think it could be a long term favorite !
Is missing the remote but. Are the remotes for these universal or are they all different and can you show me a picture so i know what to look for please ??

baddboybill - 2009-04-16 07:17

Yes that viking you for free was an awsome deal Cool

fatdog - 2009-04-16 08:28

thanks.
that viking was free, but then again so was the m50 in the pictures.
the candle came from a dumpster. the m50 and viking were about to be thrown out at my wifes work.

heheheh.
its just way nicer than i think most might think. i mean this has the same sized woofers as a m70. it is extremely good as a radio.
it is just alot of fun all around.

hello you know there is a page that shows how to fix the sony apm speakers online. it looks fairly easy to make new surrounds for these. i believe the page also says the repair is permanant.
you know i have both remotes for the fh-215r
i am going to dig one out and post a photo for you.

thanks man.
you know the m50 and sk-95 were both made to go head to head on the sales floor.
i think they were anyways.
the pioneer has a very nice balanced sound. it can get pretty loud but most likely not enough to piss off someone in another part of the house.
the m50 can absolutely piss off other people in the house Big Grin it is a excellent made radio.
the pioneer is built extremely well too. some despise the speaker grills but i have come to be quite fond of them.
Rock On.

billpc55 - 2009-04-16 10:13

for those who missed the tale of the free viking and m50

baby.boomer - 2009-04-16 10:20

Nice sampling of a variety of cool boomboxes! And nice topic. Maybe we should all do a "top ten in-use" now and then. Be fun to see what boxes are our daily users. I'm definitely with you on the Sanyo 9998 and JVC M80. Can't get enough of them!

Might even be time to revive the "What box(es) are you booming to right now?" thread that was all the rage a few years ago. It ran out of steam back then, but now could be the time for a revival.

Thanks heaps. I see hundreds of remotes for sale at the swap meets, this will give me some idea as what to look for. Thanks again.

billpc55 - 2009-04-16 16:45

good luck getting one. if you can get it from a garage sale you are way better of than going the ebay route. i have seen these remotes bringing silly money.

- 2009-04-16 18:02

bill, you have some nice boxes in your collection Big Grin

What does the other big Sony you have look like? Is it the same model?

I know the feeling about those tape decks... More than half the boxes in my collection have minor (up and down or muffled sound) to major (no play) tape deck problems. Frown

billpc55 - 2009-04-16 18:44

i have two identical sony fh215rs.
you know i am ok with the tape decks not working on most stuff. for me if the radio dont work its usually a deal breaker no matter how cheap the boombox is.
yeah i got those two sonys from a guy who basically just gave them aways.they are very cool man.
i mean i always get a kick out of peoples faces when i let them hear one.
i should perhaps treat them a little more gingerly but i love to turn those guys up loud.

monolithic - 2009-04-16 18:55

Ain't nothing that the line-in can't cure. Big Grin

So how does it rank in your collection as far as sound goes?

Before my box collecting days comes to an end, I will have one of those big Sony boxes. Nod Yes

billpc55 - 2009-04-16 19:28

honestly that sony fh215r is the most intense sounding boombox i have yet to hear. it also has extremely good full rich sound.
it really drops your jaw when you hear it with the super accoustic turbo button pushed in.
yes it has a super accoustic turbo button.
hehehe.
i think that some might find it hard to believe but this boombox can pretty much shred the kaboom.
the bass that comes out of it is just something you have to hear to believe.
its 30 watts rms per channel.
those apm speakers sound really good. different.
i have had mine turned up seventy five percent and well it just was intense.

it really does give some of my bigger stereos a run.
i cant really see much out there in terms of a portable stereo that would be able to run with these crazy sonys.
they really are that damn good.
in both a sound quality battle and a pure loudness war. i would feel pretty confident bringing this tank to the battle field.

monolithic - 2009-04-16 22:40

Eek If that's not an endorsement... Big Grin

I was convinced before, but now, I'm totally sold!!! Thanks for the info! Cool

billpc55 - 2009-04-16 22:42

yeah those sonys slay.
some people dont think of them as boomboxes. you could get a battery pack for them and they have a handle. its a boombox in my books.
a really amazing one.

monolithic - 2009-04-16 22:47

The battery packs are harder to find than the boxes themselves aren't they?

billpc55 - 2009-04-16 22:50

yes. this particular one aparently had to have the batterypack retro fitted at sony.
they really are neat tho.
i mean the display on these is just really cool.

monolithic - 2009-04-16 23:21

Yeah, I still remember the one my friends sister had (my friend kept it in his basement tho)... It had the coolest display I ever saw on a boombox back in the late 80's... When it came to loudness, I didn't fear ANY box when I carried my Lasonic TRC-931 back in the late 80's 'cause I'd been in battles before and won easily... After hearing how loud it was from outside his house, I feared that Sony! Laugh Out Loud I had to turn my box off before I got within 20 feet of his basement door,... and it would take walking another 20 feet before I got in front of the Sony! Big Grin

billpc55 - 2009-04-17 00:31

hehehe.
yes the sony is pretty loud. i mean it will for sure rattle the windows.
i hope you find one. mine came quite unexpected.
they are sure cool tho.
