Gluecifer's First Anniversary Collection Update

gluecifer - 2009-04-25 04:02

After wanting to collect ghettoblasters for more than a couple of decades I finally began to realise this dream one year ago this month, in April 2008.

Over the last year, thanks to stereo2go, I've amassed a collection I'm very proud of. When I began collecting I had little idea of where to begin, or even which radios to collect, but from the stereo2go community I've learned how and what to collect along with learning lots of new methods repairing, restoring and customising that I previously had no idea about. For everything I've received from the people on here I'm eternally grateful for your willingness to share and help others along.

It's all the members of the stereo2go family that make this place my online home and have made the last year of collecting so much damned fun. I'd like to dedicate this post to all the new collectors just starting up, with patience and willingness to learn you can get so much reward from this hobby far, far beyond just having a wonderfully designed piece of portable audio in your ownership.

Rock On brothers and sisters, I look forward to spending many more years on Stereo2go and spreading the love and learning more on this great hobby and being part of this truly wonderful community.

Ok enough of the mushy stuff, on with the blasters!

And here's one of me getting amongst it

Rock On.

Hard to believe you accumulated so much primo stuff in just a year. Amazing... and a beautiful sight to see! "Easy on the eyes," as they say.

After my first year, I had two Panasonic mid-sizers, a Toshiba 80 with most of its knobs missing (ended up as our "bathroom box"... on the floor), and a red Magnavox (Philips) "Roller" that I used for making messages for our phone answering machine... until one day I dropped the box down the stairs and it rolled (what else?) into our basement. Year two went a little better.

Can't wait to see your "year two." I'm sure it'll be spectacular!

(Nice dreads! So, what's it like to wash your hair?)

Thanks very much for all the kudos brothers, it's greatly appreciated.

Ford93: I used to have regular long hair but locked it all up about 17 years ago. And you didn't even notice my paying homage to your classic pose in your avatar! Terrible!

Haha ok, I've been thinking about this ALL day, and need to break it down (for you fellas) as it gets complicated, so I'm doing them as a selection of the favourite 3 in each category as I can't separate them any further.

For Looks:
Conion C-100 - This is the quinessential design for a brutally overblown radio and is the cultural icon of the entirity of 80s audio for me.

RISING 20/20 - This is one of the few I have that the design I believe is totally perfect for the definition of a ghettoblaster in size, the way it's features are displayed and the overall aesthetics. If I was to show a person who had no idea what a ghettoblaster was I believe showing them the RISING explains it all without words.

Sharp GF-777 - It's individuality and sheer inventiveness of design makes me really love the look of the 777. The amount of switches and knobs and the majestical row of 4 speakers does something alot of radios try and fail at by marrying the looks of sophisticated high end gear with street cred and general bad-assness. Love this radio for a thousand reasons, but it's looks are right up there with the best.

For Sound:

Conion C-100 - The ludicrous amount of power still blows me away, but on low volumes I love the sound of this radio, it has it's own personality and isn't especially great at perfect clarity, but it's got a very aggressive sound that genuinely blasts music out of it.

Aiwa TPR-950 - The s2go mascot radio has a beautiful sound that makes a lot of my bigger radios sound a lot smaller. The detail and warmth in this radio is marvellous.

Sanyo Bigben - Hands down the most incredible range I've heard in a portable. Not a volume-monster, but certainly not underpowered. This radio has to be heard to be believed, it's leagues above all my other radios for bass, mids and highs and how they all work together.

Of extra note in sound, I also rate my custom 777 (has blaupunkt sides in it and new tweeters) as a very, very impressive powerhouse, but this is a bit of a moot point as it's not stock.

Also I'd like to make special mention of my Sharp GF-9494X. Now I know this radio gets a bad rap for a 'flat' or unimpressive sound, and I'll agree when listening to it indoors. BUT, take it out on the streets and crank it halfway and my LORD it becomes a very, very impressive radio. I'm certain it was designed for this kind of use first and foremost. It may not have the bass, but it's throw and 'sound footprint' are amazing. I love my 9494X and highly encourage everyone who uses their radios outdoors to give it a try.

Sorry for the longwinded response, but I don't take these decisions lightly as my radios mean a lot to me and every one of them has been hand picked to be in my collection. As a final note, I didn't include my Pioneer CK-7 as I still need to send her speaker to Prime to get re-foamed, and I didn't include my Denon as she does sound superamazing, but I'm yet to experience tape playback on her, so I'll reserve my judgement till then.

Sin: I think it's a bit too big for the postal service to carry, brother. How about I send it piece by piece? haha, should cost more than a couple of hundred to get it all there!

Rock On.

rick --enjoyed/agreed with about every point in your terrific, careful review --
