Dumpster scores a MAJOR box at Salvation Army!

dumpstermyass - 2009-06-11 21:45

Hey Guys,

I was moping at the Salvation Army when I saw a major score, which I grabbed and ran with: this is a Crown CSC 350F....does anyone have one here? I paid 7 dollars, but the tape player is shot at the moment. I will attach pics soon, thanks!

dumpstermyass - 2009-06-12 08:43

Hi Guys,

I have been looking all over the net for a picture of this boombox, but it is as if it doesn't exist! Stereo80s.com has a CSC-300F, which looks similar but not quite. This is one of those 4 speaker type models, in the same vein as the Magnavox D8443, Sharp GF777, and the Toshiba WX-1. It has 2 SW bands (yes!!), FM, and MW (AM) bands.

The bad: It is missing a few knobs, and the tape player is not playing and makes a weird noise. The rewind/fast forward work fine though...

I am afraid to open this unit up due to its very large size, but if I can get a schematic or something like a service manual (thats funny), I will take this one on..

Any internet sleuths available to find a picture of this unit? Thanks for your help!

PS: I seem to be accumulating a lot of previously expensive boomboxes that work only partially...does anyone have a collection like this?

old.school.scott - 2009-06-12 10:56

Of my collection of 13, only 6 of them play cassettes perfectly. that's what inputs are for.
I hook a little ipod shuffle up to the side w/ a short modified cord, and I'm rockin the block.
Ipods pump out more bass for your box too so it's win win.

Cheers OSS

dumpstermyass - 2009-06-12 17:54

You are definitely correct, OSS. Without the line in/outs, the boombox can only do so much. And besides, tape heads and the tapes wear out after a time- and I am now on my 2nd copy of Kool and The Gang's Emeregency album from 1984! BOOYEAH! Nod Yes

dumpstermyass - 2009-06-12 17:56

Thanks to Ira, I am now able to post a picture of the unit online! Thanks again!

sweet find - bet your heart was beating ten to the dozen Laugh Out Loud

not all of my boxes work well - but who's to say that a box that doesn't work can't be a piece of ART ! we hang pictures on the walls - china in a cabernet and so on - so why can't we place a nice looking ghetto blaster on the side if it gives our eyes pleasure Nod Yes Cool

dumpstermyass - 2009-06-13 06:58

Hey Bendycat, you just gave me a great idea: To display my boxes on the walls! Screw art (not literally), blasters are real culture!

And yes, I was in total shock when I saw the Crown on that shelf...90% of the stuff there is junk (I did get a big black JVC from 1989 there once for 12$) but every once in a while you might find something unique...

old.school.scott - 2009-06-14 07:44

Yeh man, I LOVE that feeling!
You're making your tri-weekly stop into your local Value Village Thrift, you wave to the woman at the register who smiles to herself probably wondering why you frequent her store, walk over to the electronics section for an eyefull of the usual, TV sets, VHS tape rewinding machines, {the most useless contraption ever invented} and tons of VCRs. "But wait, what's this?" you think to yourself as you spot something different out of the corner of your eye, beautiful metallic nobs glistening through years of dust? You know right away It's a boomer! You glance over your shoulder to see if anyone is behind you attempting to snatch it from your grasp. There are some gentleman radio watchers within feet of this thing, so quickly you grab, but before you look down at your catch you quickly scan the room for any others...these things often come to the "Village" in pairs. You pick it up the box to investigate your finding, it's heavy, there's chrome, it's HUGE, HOLY BEAT CUT! Look at that woofer!! You've just found yourself a JVC RC550!!
You bring it up to the check out trying to disguise your smile because there is no price on it, which means the lady at the counter is going to have to make one up...You blow some dust off of it to show her how old and useless this archaic machine is. "Hmmmmm, that's a cassette player huh?" she deducts. "Yeh," you answer,"who uses these any more,I'll probably give it to my nephew to play with." She looks it over and gives you her decision,...12 BUCKS!

litfan - 2009-06-14 14:11

Yeah. I have one of these things. Heavy, or what?

kballenger53 - 2009-06-14 15:11

JESUS CHRIST!!! That's not a Box, that's an ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD!!! I'm afraid to ask how many batteries it takes!!!

You know what, CROWN used to make some very nice AMPS back in the day!!! We used to use CROWN amps when I used to DJ at the Cheetah Club in Paterson, NJ!!!

If that Box is as good as the amps we used to use, I'm sure it can knock down some Buildings!!! Good Luck with it!!!

You guys totally crack me up!

But if you ever actually got an RC550 for 12 bucks, that is one for the record books. I found a REALLY NICE Japanese made Sony Walkman from the mid 1980's, but it had a green tag with a Cross on it, and no price...So I take it up to the counter, and I told the lady at the counter that there was no price and how much is it? She says that the cross means it comes with another piece, and it cannot be sold without it!
I went and rummaged through 4 shelves of total sh.. and could not find anything at all. When I asked about the Walkman again, she said it would be repriced and put back on the shelf the next morning....

This is not the first time I have found something at the Salvation Army that they didn't want to sell...I even thought of pocketing it, but I passed that opportunity up for various reasons. However, if there is stilla cross on it in 2 days, IT WILL BE POCKETED! Mad

dumpstermyass - 2009-06-18 11:42

Wait, Litfan, you HAVE one of these? NO WAY! I thought I was the only one...thats cool!

The Crown is EXTREMELY heavy. Id say about 50 pounds with batteries maybe?

litfan - 2009-06-18 13:56

Hey D. yeah, when i recover from my brain hemorrhage, i`m gonna do it up. Here`s hoping anyway.

dumpstermyass - 2009-06-18 16:10

BRAIN HEMORRHAGE?!?!? Geez, are you OK? Are you getting better? God I hope so, that is serious man! Eek Frown

Mine doesn't have the tape door and I am missing a few knobs. I am not all that worried about the knobs, its the tape door I am worried about!

Glad to see someone else owns one of these heavy hitters!

jd3 - 2009-06-18 18:40

The one with black wrapping with some grey exposed looks like some kind of JVC I'd guess...the whole room is filled in!

litfan - 2009-06-19 09:53

Hey guy`s. I have forgotten what`s in that shed Smile. The only problem with being out of action for so long, is, some boxes don`t work anymore.

kballenger53 - 2009-06-19 17:18

You mean to tell me that's at the Salvation Army??? Check this out, we'll wait 'til 12 mid-nite. Make sure the alarm system's off, knock out the guard, and load up the truck!!!

Then we'll spit up in 4 directions, and meet up with each other a year later!!!
