Just HAD to post a photo showing my new Eversonic SH-550 bolt box alongside two of its siblings, the Bon Sonic H-5000 and Kasuga KC-202.



The Eversonic was a recent buy from RBJ that's the pristinest (no, I don't think it's an actual word, but it fits) of the three (although I still can't figure out how the alarm - the only version with one - works; the purple rectangle on the dial seems to be part of it). It's also a Canadian issue with (as is usually the case with Canadian issues) single 120v. AC power.

The Bon Sonic is just like the Eversonic, but it has multi-voltage AC and no alarm (and therefore no purple box).

The Kasuga has a slightly different paint scheme and is apparently the granddaddy of them all, since Kasuga Seiki Mfg. Co. was the Japanese maker of this boombox.

Now, be honest. Who doesn't like to wake up every morning and find triplets hanging out in their living room???!

Wow!! That's amazing!! Is that the trifecta of all the AKA's or are there more to collect?

but --soon after that --they are all cool and beautiful.

Hahah, nevermind that! 3 bolt boxes together must constitute a religious experience to most collectors, I'm definitely astounded!

(and yeah, it's a right pain to wash my hair, dreads go past my knees now, not an easy job)

Now that it's working,I took my "bolt box" to work.After 20 years,I finally got to hear one of these boxes again.When playing music with alot of bass,this thing REALLY rattles!I don't know if it's just my example.The bass itself is good if you leave the pot centered or nearly so.Anything past +3 on the pot breaks up the sound to the point it's unlistenable.Playing dance mixes is not this boxes strong point.Mids are not the cleanest but are nice and bright just the way I like them.The treble pot seems to have alot of effect on the highs.Boosting the highs makes them quite sharp just as I had remembered.This box really shines when playing punk,metal,guitar rock,etc.!It is very loud and will fill the air with a high frequency sheen.It's an electrifying listening experience!The lightning bolts on the speakers reflect it's character perfectly.To borrow from a stereo2go user name,this is a "rockbox"!
FM reception is good.However,it's ability to pick up AM seems poor as I could only get one station.The cassette on mine is not working.The line-in sensitivity is excellent.The sensitivity of the mic inputs seemed also good but I could only get sound from one channel.The only other operating box of mine I can compare it to is my Magnavox D8443.It sounds similar for bass output but has somewhat more pronounced mids and highs.It's far from hifi but has that emphasis on the sound that became increasing hard to find after the mid '80s.Though I'm fond of it's harsh sound,most I suppose will appreciate it more for it's size,form,and style.This picture shows my laughable attempt to disguise the fact that the tape door is missing.I applied two strips of gray electrical tape to simulate the tape door's trim."

I say WOW #2,Baby boomer (or that should be 3 in this case!)!I absolutely love this core box.There were a multitude of variations including versions with different grills and no bolts.Here is the Le Baron I spoke of in my post:



The color scheme is pretty much the same as your Kasuga version.As I said,bass is fairly good since the drivers are large.Positive rotation of the bass pot is of little worth though.It will just result in a breakup of the sound fairly early.I found the rattles in mine to be the result of some missing screws.

It's the aggressive high frequency output and sheer loudness of this series that I remember so fondly from the early '80s.Conversation is pretty much a lost cause around these boxes if the volume is cranked.It has a real "in your face" sound that pretty much vanished (with some exceptions) in the mid/late part of the decade.Of course there are other boxes from the period that will do similar things,but this is the one I had specifically experienced so it's special to me.Finding one of these (a non bolted variant) is what started my passion for this hobby.

It warms my heart to see 3 of these beauties in the hands of a real collector like yourself baby boomer.How nice it is to see them safe and sound for future generations to appreciate!
