My 1st BBX in 20 years! I am excited!

rom.selecta - 2009-07-03 06:53

I got my first box since my Toshiba from 20 years ago! A Sharp GF-999!!! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

I just won the auction so I havent seen it in person yet but the pics look good and the price was right - 6755 yen (about $68 US).

Thats it in my profile pic...

I can see a bad habit starting here... I am envisioning a wall of GF-909/919/999's in my spare room all linked up and hooked up to my turntables! Cool

im.out.of.hear - 2009-07-03 07:03

i`ve said this lots of times..
The GF999 is one of my all time favourite boxes..big congrats on your purchase,if you would have been in the uk,i would have been all over that like stink on a skunk..
look after it..

rom.selecta - 2009-07-03 07:09

Cheers! I am actually watching 2 more on auction right now... but one is a bit pricey - 15000 yen and the other is a fixer upper.

Also have my eye on a Pioneer SK-900!

im.out.of.hear - 2009-07-03 08:29

it does`nt really matter if they work or they need attention,at the prices you are paying, its worth buying them all,Then just sort out the keepers and the ones you want to sell on..then either resell on the bay or put them up on here,i think its great what you are doing..keep collecting man Smile

rom.selecta - 2009-07-03 08:42

Yeah, thats kinda the plan... the wife will think I am crazy(er) Big Grin

I currently have about 20 boxes in my watch list already and 2 more in my bid list LOL Laugh Out Loud

im.out.of.hear - 2009-07-03 08:58

Yesss Kool...
I like the sound of that,i`m getting excited already, buy all them then put some pics up for us to see..kool !!

superduper - 2009-07-03 11:29

If prices like that were available here in the states, I'd take 20 of them now -- no kidding!

rom.selecta - 2009-07-05 07:53

2 more have been added to the collection!
A GF-919

and a GF-909!

Hopefully 2 more will be added in the next few days!

...and the insanity begins... Muahahahahaha! Big Grin

rom.selecta - 2009-07-06 05:28

And now a 2nd GF-909!! Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

im.out.of.hear - 2009-07-06 10:34

Go for it man, yesss, you need boxes, more boxes, lots more !! you cant stop now Big Grin

rom.selecta - 2009-07-07 00:56

I my 1st BBX arrived today! The GF-999 and it sounds great! Having never seen one in Australia (where is am originally from) I was quite surpised when I saw it... It is so damn big... I LIKE IT !!! Big Grin Cool

The sound is great - warm bass, no crakling from any of the knobs either! I now have to get a cassette to test it :P Lucky for me they are easy to find in this country... Big Grin

The exterior is a little rough but not too bad!

Is getting the outer case resprayed a bad idea? I can mask all the panels with the writing on it as they are clean.

Also, the grills look to be a dark navy blue... is that the right color?

im.out.of.hear - 2009-07-07 02:53

i`de say..if you plan on selling it on,i would`nt spray it,i`de leave it as it is,if the front is clean, the outer sides and top is`nt really that important..The blue grills, thats normal, there meant to be that colour,The GF767 is the same..
That GF919 looks very clean, the GF909 looks ok,just needs a clean up by the looks of it..your doing well..carry on collecting..
if i was there and seen those boxes for them prices,i could`nt help myself,i`de buy them all..i`ve never seen prices as cheap like that for big boomers..

rom.selecta - 2009-07-07 07:44

...and another GF-909 goes in the collection (#3 I believe)... looks like my wall of GF-9XX BBX's is not far away Big Grin Big Grin

kballenger53 - 2009-07-08 09:46

WORD TO THE MUTHA!!! ROM SELECTA, if this is your first Box in 20 years, YOU'VE STRUCK GOLD!!! What you need to do is get yourself a Bangin' Disco Tape from the 80's, pop that Sucker in, and take your GF-999 out for a walk like it's your best friend!!!

A Box isn't a Box, until you've given it the "Street Test". Just make sure you've got some extra money for Batteries, 'cause GF-999's have a very BIG APPETITE!!!

Good Luck Bro'!!!

Hey, my kind of Music!!! And since you know about Larry Levan and Larry Heard, I know you're Cool!!! Cool Believe it or not, I used to DJ at a Club in Newark, New Jersey called Club Zanzibar and Larry Levan would stop in from time to time to make a guest appearance!!!

He was good friends with DJ Tony Humphries, who was the Headline DJ at that time. Club Zanzibar has been torn down, but the memories linger on. I remember hearing and spinning the sounds of Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers there. I still have all of my House Music Collection!!!

Take Care Of That Box!!!

rom.selecta - 2009-07-17 07:36

Holy sh1t!! You played at Zanzibar? I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy! That era was at the pinnacle of house in my opinion... I'd love ta see what's in your collection!

I've had to go digital (serato) as moving my whole collection to Japan from Australia was going to cost me a small fortune, so I recorded most of my collection (about 3000 records) to HDD and sold most of them. I kept about 500 of my most prized ones thought Wink

I started DJing back in '89 but had started listening to house in high school. Still playing now when I can get gigs here in Tokyo.

I saw Larry Heard play here last year at the Liquid Room and his sh1t is still tight! I was the best night I have had in 8 years! Cant wait till here comes here again... one great thing about Japan is he comes here a lot- unlike Aust.

kballenger53 - 2009-07-17 07:52

Yep, I sure did Rom Selecta!!! I started DJing back in '76!!! Straight Up Disco Baby!!! But by the time I got there, in the early 90's, Club Zanzibar was just a shell of it's former self. But it was still a thrill to stand in the very same spot that the Legends have stood in: DJ HIPPIE, DJ LARRY LEVAN, DJ TEE SCOTT, DJ SHEP PETTIBONE, DJ TONY HUMPHRIES, DJ TIMMY REGISFORD, DJ NAYIM JOHNSON, & KBALLENGER53 AKA DJ KB CHILL!!!

Send me your address in a PM, and I'll mail you a nice House Cassette to help break that GF-999 in!!! Make sure you keep that Box on a short leash, or else it'll get away from you!!! Nod Yes
