Toshiba BomBeat RT-S93

monolithic - 2008-08-01 17:53

The best made boombox I own arrived today! Big Grin

^ I was too excited to take pics of the packing job... As soon as I cleared a spot for it, I immediately started taking the packing apart! Big Grin Basically, the radio's box was wrapped in one layer of bubble wrap and boxed in another box - a Toshiba box at that! Big Grin Finally, it was encased in parts of other boxes which were then taped up and secured with heavy duty plastic bands... Not necessarily a good packing job when it comes to boomboxes, but sufficient nonetheless. Lucky for me, EMS is good with shipping and handling 'cause if this was a UPS delivery...

^ The excellent shape that the box is in reminds me of the brand new Lasonic i931 I just bought a month or so ago... Amazing! Eek

^ Original styrofoam packing!

^ Accessories, paperwork and whatnot!

^ Wait for it... Wait for it...

^ BAAAMMMMMM!!!!

^ Fresh out the box!

^ The back... There's a little gunk over the phono plugs, kinda looks like tape residue.

^ So fresh, so clean!

^ You gotta love the fact that everything is there - including Toshiba's suggested retail price tag , which in todays dollars adds up to about $834 U.S.. Eek

^ The wireless remote... I don't plan on opening those battery packages. I think I'll go to Radio Shack and see if they have equivalents. Wink

^ Locked and loaded!

^ There it is! Cool

Well, I'll be honest... At the moment, I'm a little disappointed 'cause it can't handle hard-hitting bass that well. But on the other hand, I think this may be the best sounding box I have overall! I don't think this box was made for blasting Hip-Hop and R&B and maybe it's a great Rock box. I'll throw on some Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath and Cream tomorrow and see... Wink

jimski - 2008-08-01 18:49

The way the speakers look,it looks as if it sounds mid bassy and kinda loud.

redbenjoe - 2008-08-01 18:54

mono --i think it took some balls to take that big $$ chance on a japan auction --
---and glad it all went like perfect !!

"Mid bassy"?... Yeah, it is somewhat. The woofers easily distort when pushed hard with bass heavy music but I guess it could get loud. Confused I gotta figure out the correct way to tweak the sound and my Japanese skills are wack - I can't read a word of the stuff. Frown

Right now, I'm running an iPod thru the jacks in the back and playing some Japanese R&B, bossa nova and whatnot... Sounds damn good and better than the modded out TRC-920 I was playing earlier today when I took it to work. I think this is a great box to listen to at normal to close to loud listening levels. Nod Yes Hopefully SINISTER and Royal can chime in 'cause they have the U.S. version of this box. Smile

Thanks, man! Cool

I've bought lots of stuff from Japan in the past 4 years and never had a problem. But then again, those were CD's and sneakers - never big items like electronics... I guess I lucked-up! Big Grin

Way to go Monolithic!!! By far the most outstanding grab I've seen to date. I am so happy for you man. This has to beat the hunt for that super jumbo by leaps and bounds. Big Grin Nod Yes

You know, before I went to Tokyo 2 years ago, I was trying to learn a little Japanese... Let's just say that Japanese is very, very, very hard to learn and if you let yourself get distracted by other things... The bottom line is, I should know enough Japanese to understand what most of that writing says, but I've been too lazy to learn. Big Grin Frown

So are you running straight US voltage into it, or do you have an upconverter?

ford93 - 2008-08-02 05:41

You got good taste in rock music especially (Cream) mr. Slow Hands I love their music.

Hey, Mono who sold you the box. Looking at the pics. with all the accesories reminds me when I used to buy my boomboxes back then.

Congrats on your minty boombox!

Straight U.S. voltage... It's funny 'cause I bought one of these for my trip to Tokyo...

I didn't (and still don't) use it. It's sittin' next to the Toshiba right now. Big Grin

Those batteries are at least 24 years old... I highly doubt they have any juice left in 'em. I'll leave the packs unopened and try to find replacement batteries at Radio Shack.

Considering that all the boxes I bought so far came with nothing but the power cord, I can't see myself getting anything better than this! Like I said before, I hope lightning can strike twice... or maybe a few more times! Big Grin

Much appreciated, guys! Smile

Beautiful box. What a catch!

*Do these usually have chrome speaker caps?
Or is it because it's the Jap version?

Either way, real high class piece of kit Cool

I don't understand why they don't have chrome dust caps. Confused I commented on that before...

You have an incredible box there monolithic! As walkgirl said,it just might be the most classic looking box ever made. It's a solid build with the classic silhouette. The numerous color accents on the front continue to entertain no matter how many times I look at it.

Concerning its bass,I've always been a fan of the rock box blasters personally. Those didn't necessarily have a lot of bass. Some of us really like that type of sound as it works well with our musical tastes. The equalizer was not very common on a box before the declining era.I would bet you could fine tune that EQ and get much change especially with the highs.

That looks like my dream box to be honest. The pictures showing the unpacking are quite literally breath taking!Whatever you paid for that box I'm thinking it is well justified.I'm not usually one to make such statements.

How does the remote control stay on?, is it
magnetick?

^ The remote stays on with the help of those two grey nubs on the bottom + one on the top...

^ when the blue piece is pushed into the unit with the remote.

My thing is, I understand you not liking the idea of not being able to control the tape deck without the remote, but unless you didn't read the part on the remote that states: "WIRELESS FEATHER TOUCH LOGIC CONTROLLED SYSTEM", why would you waste your time commenting on not being "a fan of these solenoid controlled bbx's"? Confused

On a related note, were you interested in that auction?

I'm glad you like it and my, uh... "presentation", Jovie! Smile Big Grin Cool

As for an EQ - there is no EQ, only bass and treble controls, but I get your point. Wink I've accepted the fact that certain boxes are better at certain types of music and from listening to Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" right now, this box sounds incredible playing Rock... It's not the "screamer" I was hoping for (the amount of volume the box puts out is a bit reserved, in my opinion), but it's the best sounding box I have when it comes to every other music genre than 808 bass heavy Hip-Hop. Then again, that may have more to do with woofer size 'cause the 6 boxes I own with 6 1/2" woofers don't reproduce that kind of bass very well anyway. My Lasonic TRC-931 and General Sound GS-1018 (I won't really count the i931), on the other hand, have 8" woofers...

Thanks again for the kind comments! Smile

I honestly wasn't concerned... until you brought that up! Eek So I did some research and found out that the U.S. electronics I took to Tokyo weren't in danger of being damaged (I found that out after I got there), but when you flip the script... No No
