Thursday's thrifty find

baby.boomer - 2008-12-04 16:45

I have renewed faith in thrift stores. Sort of.

It's been over a year since I've found any piece of audio equipment worth buying at any of my regular thrifties in and around Detroit (mostly around, for my own safety) but today was different. I found what looks like Aiwa's answer to the Panasonic cobras, the CSD-ED87.

Sound is acceptable, but not bombastic. The three "equalizer modes" are a sorry substitute for treble and bass controls (or a real eqalizer), but the "T-bass" adds some depth and the "Q-sound" spatializer is kind of fun with the upper speakers.

All for a whopping $8.00.

Those are the (mostly) positives.

Here come the (mostly) negatives.

The "up" multifunction button is missing (How is that possible? Did someone pry it out??), but the remote control covers that.

No, the remote didn't come with the box. It's mine from another Aiwa. Good part: it works with this set. Bad part: without it, you can only tune the radio down (so, once you hit 87.5 on FM, you're done... forever) and go lower on CD tracks (which is OK, once you're past track #1). Kind of like a car that only goes backwards. But, again, with the remote, problem solved.

It's as dirty as my Uncle Roy (who mostly just talks dirty). I plan to spend next week cleaning it (and I mean ALL of next week; it's THAT dirty!). Oh well. Winter days are boring, anyhow. Roy, on the other hand, will need to clean himself. (But he never will.)

I also got Minolta QTsi for my camera collecting wife. All in all, I'd say it was a good day. For a change.

It looks to be a nice solid unit.Never pass on an Aiwa!

cant go wrong $$ Smile

and even if you chuck the box --that remote might run all your sony stuff !

Definitely different. Would a good cleaning fix the buttons or do you think they are beyond repair? It looks like it weighs a ton. Nod Yes

On a side note - Damn, Ira!! 7,000 posts?! You were at 6,600 just three days ago. Laugh Out Loud

Nice!

I stopped into a second hand store today Id never noticed before... small no name (literally) 3pc box not even worth getting... AND a ton of home gear! Nak, Teac, Technics... I left with nothing because, well; because what am I going to do with several cassette decks, cd players, etc, etc... ?!??!

Although I cant stop thinking about them!

There was even a minty Scott CD player with remote dated 1988 that still had the protective film on it! $9.99!

I guess Im going back tomorrow eh?

Collector's motto: Get it. Get it. Get it. (And worry about what you're going to do with it later.)
