Beatbox's Collection *Updated 28.01.08*

beatbox - 2007-11-24 10:45

Well, after a year of collecting seriously, I thought I would take some more pics of my collection and share with you some of the wonders I have found. Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way with this. This collection is not complete however, and there are a few more pics to go up. Also, as most of the boxes are in storage, and I'm not that organised to wrote everything down, I am afraid I may omit model numbers, but I hope you enjoy the following images anyway and any comments good or bad are welcome.

I have tried to say what condition they are in by using this system -

P = Poor - Hmmmmm.
G = Good - Will do.
VG = Very Good - Very worthy of display. and play.
EX = Excellent - Nothing to cry about.
NM = Near Mint - Almost there.
M = Mint - Looks like and plays like new.

Lets start small. I'm not a massive (hehe) fan of minis, but these are really special IMHO -

The Sanyo M7780L. L + R Volume sliders, Metal, CrO2, Normal tape select, AMSS function, LED VU, 4 Speakers, 2 Internal Mics, Tape counter, FM, SW, MW, LW, L + R Mic In, L + R Line In, L + R Line Out, Beat Cancel, EXT SPKRS L + R, Mix Mic and doesn't run off AC only DC and batteries! PHEW!! - M

Sharp QT37 - A real cutie... ahem. M

Havauxes STPR4000. I love record players and I love boomboxes. VG - NM

From Mini to Mono -

JVC RC550, one of my favourite boxes. NM

JVC 525L, crazy Mic fully extendable. M

Small boxes to medium size -

Casio CK-200. A boombox with a piano on it. NM

Hitachi TRK9140e. Built like a tank. Looks like a tank. VG

JVC RC770. I love the styling of this box, and was one of my first. NM

The Sanyo M4500KE. I've had about 4 of these, and I find them wonderful in every way. They're even a joy to work on! NM

Aiwa TPR950e. Got this for 25 euros of eBay. M

Toshiba. I like the subtle elegance/space age look of this.

Sharp GF9191. I adore this box. The perfect boombox look. Mean as hell. VG

Sharp GF8787. Stunning looks and a must IMHO. 8 euros off eBay. M

Universum 1600. Someone kept going on about it, so I bought one. Its great. NM

Sony CFS ???. I love the speaker trims and the tape control cover. VG

Palladium. Classic boombox looks, with 3 VU's! VG

Condor 877. Lavender trim, white cones and a heavy contender. NM

Goldstar. Black and white dream. NM

Sharp GF9595. Smooth classic. VG

Telefunken 100 CR100. A nice attempt by Telefunken at the classic boombox look. VG

Conic. My first real big silver Ghettoblaster/Boombox. M

Watson. Same layout as above. Same innards and top controls, but with auto-reverse. Missing door, otherwise M

Panasonic 5600. Very high quality machine. VG

Crown CSC850. In football (soccer to you weirdos) terms, my midfielder. Controls the field and keeps everyone in line. This is simply a great, wonderful, powerful, loving.... well you get the picture. NM

Loewe RS2000. Simply cos it looks absurd with those crazy dimension. NM

Sony. I don't know why I like this one, but it stands alone, maybe alongside MR TPR950e.

Grundig RR2000. Again, one of my first and haggled like hell to get it. NM

Medium - Large

Palladium. What a box!!! This just looks amazing! NM

Unisef SZ4000. I'm really into eighties stuff and though this aint no great box, the lines do it for me.

JVC RC838. I wasn't sure at first, but when I got it I was very very happy. VG - NM

JVC 3090en. Most solid box apart from the Telefunken 1M. Complete with original manual and car lighter adapter powercord. Great great great! M

Unisef SZ5100sl. A box I've wanted since I was a kid. Those looks can't be beat. THE immortal boombox look. M

Crown SZ5100. The green version which I like only very slightly less than the Unisef. NM

Santo. I can imagine some executive dude carrying this to a board meeting. VG

Telefunken 1M. THE BEST BOOMBOX IN THE WORLD!!!! M

Sarp VZ2500. I play a lot of vinyl and so there was no question about this. I have 3! This one is M

Sharp GF9000. A complete wreck of a box when I got it. Resprayed by me completely including grills. New tuner window. Waiting on dust caps and sliders from Bredgeo. VG

Conion C126. Just got it this week from that not-so-bad Chinese seller and its like new. Wanted one for ages and this one came with the plastic protective film all over the front paneling as well as the original chord still in its original plastic bag stuffed into the battery compartment. M

Intersound J747s. My third one and this one is the best. I had to have this ever since I saw Radio Raheem carrying one. Bad as you like. M

Intersound (Sharp HK9000). HUGE!!! Weighs a ton and is really very loud. NM

Sharp GF1000. The outer cones changed for black sharp cones and the inner ones dyed black. I think it looks awesome this way. VG

Fisher PH480. A beast of a box. My second one of these. M

Projects -

Sharp VZ Stealth. Bought this absolutely worthless VZ2500, covered in tar and busted up for 8 euros. Painted it, switched out the cones and got it belted up.

Unilite. Stuck some lights on.

An obligatory 'stack' shot.

So, there you have it... for now. There are a few more to be added to this, but you get the idea, right?

I feel terribly lucky to live where I do as 80% of these boxes were bought locally and for next to nothing. I understand that others don't have such luck when it comes to finding boxes, let alone ones you may actually want to buy. So, I am very proud of this collection and finally get to share it with you great folks.

I havent gone into detail or even mentioned sound quality, as this is such a subjective thing and I believe that the only way to really know is to find out for yourself.

I will however say that of all these boxes, the Telefunken 1M remains the most powerful, clearest, deepest, smoothest, warmest, bright, thunderous, soothing, elegant, muscular box I have ever witnessed and is the ONLY box that has stayed in its place since I first got it while others have been taken out and put away again.

So, thanks for looking and I hope you enjoyed my collection.

Peace.

Smile

Thanks for all the comments people! It really is a pleasure to be able to share this with you, and of course is part of collecting for me. Knowing that you folks wll understand and ppreciate these things makes it all the more fun.

rbj - I have been taking pics of my boxes over a few weeks now in preparation. Doing all of them at once is crazy as most are packed away. Its great though setting up a photoshoot, getting the best angles etc!

Tim - Thanks mate! I still love Rambo's and Drip's and believe I have a way to go before I get to their standard. By the way. Its my girlfriends small Sony camera!!

tranxmetal - ?

AK74 - I have a girlfriend.

MasterBlaster84 - Sometimes words just can't describe a box, I find pics speak louder. Wink

bashngu - I got a 'metallic effect' paint and masked everything off. I'll be posting pics of the process soon. The metallic effect was close enough and had those all important sparkles!

KS - Thanks man. You've been there with me all the way man and feel like your my boombrother. One day we will meet and drink lots of beers and boom our boxes.

There are only 2 more boxes which really need to feature here. The JVC M90 and the TRK8200. Watch this space!!

rambo.estrada - 2007-11-28 00:25

Wow, great collection you have there Beatbox! I like it that you have built up such an extensive collection without spending big $'s. That means that you are both blessed with some great hunting grounds and also have been prepared to work extremely hard hunting!!

I like some of the unique mid-size boxes you own. Lots of interesting stuff there.

Man I am very jealous of that JVC TV box!! That thing is way cool. Now if it just had silver dust caps it would be the ultimate!

jovie - 2007-11-28 10:56

A collection i can only dream of!btw-The palladium and sharp 9595 don't have any speaker grills.were they originally sold that way? It's a really nice look!

beatbox - 2007-11-28 13:59

Thanks again guys!

Well, to tell you the truth, I think its basically the fact that there are (or were Wink ) a lot of radios in lots of shops just waiting to be found around here. Also, I live directly on a square where every Sunday there is a flea market. And the ONLY stall that always has a supply of radios is right outside my window, so I always get first dibs on anything! But yes, I didnt have a job for a while and so every other day I spent hunting and gathering. I have a lot more boxes that I havent yet posted which I've also acquired from my local hunting grounds. There are lots that I've passed, just because they're really common (the Sanyo M4500KE for example, I've had around 4 of these, also the Universum 1600) and I simply don't have the space for them!

I took the grills off! I think the Sharp 9595 looks a bit too sensible otherwise, and the palladiums looks are hidden by its grills, so off they came!

appleknocker - 2007-11-28 19:06

Great collection! Thanks for taking the time to create this thread, it is really fun to see all your boomers! I like your rating system and your little comments about each box. It is also great the way you have hunted most of these boxes down at the flea markets and such places. I know what a great feeling it is to be out there in the hunt looking for boomboxes, but the feeling I don't know is when you actually find a boombox while hunting!

peter.griffin - 2007-11-30 07:54

WOW, amazing Beatbox, just amazing. Just when I want to stop buying more boomboxes, I see a collection like this and it's gets my juices flowing againSmile

charlesdickens - 2007-11-30 08:19

Amazing collection!!! I saw sooo many M and NM there. Ok, when I win the lottery... a few times... I will call you!!!

Thats right James, I got another few which I still need to picture and put up, its just finding the time and right sunny day!

The Universum is one of those boxes that doesnt look like much, but its lines are JUST right and the more you look at it and hold it, the more it feels like a good quality box. Mine is super shiny as I spent a long time ckeaning it up. The sound from it is awesome too!

Thanks TG!!! The Black and White Palladium is actually really solid black thick plastic, but not the regular kind of black plastic on something like the J1 or Unisef. Its a tougher, denser material, really tough, so it has a super solid feel and you could ship it to the moon and it would arrive fine. Its very loud too with a very clear sound. Bassy.

As for the other Palladium, it is surprisingly good. I did think it would have a cheapness in it's sound as it looks a little flashy, but I enjoyed testing it and it's worth having in the collection.

cman750 - 2007-12-03 12:48

Very Nice collection 10 out 10 ..

Respect

beatbox - 2007-12-15 11:35

So, here are a few more boxes that I would like to show. I still have a few more, but its getting harder and harder to picture all of them as so many reside at the 'back' of my store room, and pulling 30+ boxes aint no easy task!

Anyway, first of all a couple of boxes which I really like the look of and hope to fix up someday.

We have the Conion which as you can see has a lot of chrome corrosion. This is gonna get a full makeover so watch this space for results.

Next the Pilips which just needs the door! -

Now we have the JVC RCM90. Acquired from the great Tim and needing a little work. I already got a replacement top trim from Bredgo. Still needs a tape door cover as well as the actual tape transport/circuit board. Still, even in this condition its an absolute jewel and an utter pleasure to use.

The Stereo Sonic, a great box looks wise and soundwise. Can be pumped up to loud levels and has very good bass as well as decent highs. I like this a lot.

Finally we have the Hitachi TRK8200. My long lost friend and the last piece in the puzzle of boomboxes I have searched for.

Hope you like these new additions and thanks for looking, more to posted soon!

kid.sensation - 2007-12-15 11:54

that's beautiful mirko!!

I used to have this particular conion..nice box.mine had some corrosion too.
And now im very surprised..I got that same stereo-sonic and never saw it twice..now i know that there is another one out there..unfortunately mine has one blown speaker, but still sounds amazing.

the M90 is looking great mirko!

allready said my 2 cents about your new 8200 Big Grin

great update!!

Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin........ Your trim is the first trim ON an M90 that has been photographed and posted!!!! Thanks for shearing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy it does the job, even though the... well, bla, bla, bla.... Happy to see it being used for what it was/is meant for! Cool

fatdog - 2007-12-16 08:23

I can't wait to see what you can do with the Conion! Cool

autoreverser - 2007-12-16 13:18

wow. mes extremely impressed !

thanx for posting those pics, indeed a great collection, some of the units i own myselfe - f. ex. the CONIC (...mine got A/R!) or the SANTO...

hmmm. i'm having sweet dreams tonight !

b.t.w. i do like the GF-1000 the way you converted it, looks quite classy !

geoffhartwell - 2007-12-18 10:31

what a great collection, Smile
got one of those jvc 770 on the way, whats the sound quality like on these units

penge - 2007-12-18 12:34

A very, very nice collection.
Keep up the good work, well done.

masterblaster84 - 2007-12-18 13:44

Thanks for the update, that's a collection any of us would be very proud of.

beatbox - 2007-12-18 14:41

Thanks again for the comments folks! As I have said many times before, a big part of the fun is being able to share my collection with like minded people.

The JVC770 is a very small box, despite what it may look like on the pic. Its design makes it seem larger somehow. It certainly doesnt rate against any of the bigger boys, and I only really keep it because it was one of my first. But for its size and probably what you will pay for one, I'd say its OK.

- 2007-12-28 08:06

great updates mirko Smile what happened to the telefunken? did yiu get it?

lil.ange - 2008-01-05 11:18
