My Sharp GF8989

nightwish - 2011-03-04 05:52

Hello all
I recently got this Sharp GF8989  was a right old mess. The tape deck did not work due to tape heads needing a really good clean. I clean everything inside and out, with cotton buds. Took the speakers of gave them a good clean, covered in dust. Took me over 3 hours and now it works a treat. Only thing is, ariel is broken hopefully be able to pick up a replace in due course. But the radio works fine.

Just shows what a good clean can produce.

Have a good day

She scrubs up well.  Never really looked at the 8989, your pic makes me think again.

They do look good
Also everything easy to get at changing the belts is easy. 5 screws hold the cassette unit in. They also sound great. One of the best I have worked on everything easy to get at. Thats my view on the Sharp 8989

Nice model, congrats, man.  If you would like to use it with mp3 player, here's  one easy way:

I understand what you're sayin' Vytas, but the MP3 would ruin the nostalgia of the Box!!!  That's like driving a '57 Chevy with a 6 Disc Changer in it!!!  You've got to keep it original!!!  But, it's not a bad idea though.............................

had one of these,i got from dave bush ages ago.....great looking box, sounds a bit dissapointing for me.......not enough bass!i always say this with boxes.....they either look great and sound crap or look crap and sound great!when you find one that does both great then its a keeper......i have a couple like that.......m9990,m7900,gf9500,and now since yesterday a tiny national panasonic rx 1820.the gf8989 is gorgeous looking though

brigadier.vytas - 2011-05-05 13:39

KB, all cool, mate, original is original, but it is still original retro i think, or do i have to record all of my favourite tunes to cassettes?;]  And another thing  - ok, there is no real line in on this model, but lots of bbx'es do have a real line in and they are still original  in my opinion:]

i like origonal also,i play alot of tapes but using a boombox with mp3 player makes a ghetto blater more versatile and brings them into the 21st century.

well matey yours couldnt have been worse than the poor old 8989 ive just picked up.....case badly marked with concrete splashes, the plate behind the knobs and controls is uncracked but peppered with loads of white marks that have removed the silver finish, several knocks, scratches and dings and a ton of crap in the cassette deck too-but amazingly it all works, and really well.looks like an ex building site radio to me.it cost my mate a fiver who got it for me.but heres the thing-not only do i take back my previous comment about these being bass shy (they bloody arent lol)but i now love this one most of all my other boxes-sure its careworn, but its been loved, and thats what makes me happy, and its safe now-it will live out its days with me now.
