Nice! You're definitely going for quality over quantity which is the best way to go.  Loving that Sony in the middle

Hey Tony

I've got a 550 as well. Does your LCD display still lightup? Have you got the handle for it?

These seem to be the most common issues with the 55/ 550 boxes

347.tony - 2013-02-25 17:24

Northerner that Sony Is decent, but sound just Isn't what the JVC's are. I think I've become a little Bias. Lol Pani sounds good as well.

347.tony - 2013-02-25 17:29

Brutus442 I got It all (took the handle off for the pic) ,but the light's don't work In the display or I believe behind the EQ. i was really looking for a 55 but found this one first, I'll take It apart and change the lamps In It. It's actually In really good shape no wonder on account of the weight of It. I forgot how heavy these one's were. Lol

there are 2 fuse type bulbs in the 55 that are very easy to buy and replace...

the biggest problem with a 55 is when you start getting missing segments on the display...there is nothing you can do and the display just looks a mess.....this is why i very rarely use my pc 55's as the display can go without any warning...

btw nice boxes you have there tony congrats

347.tony - 2013-02-25 17:55

Tk you, the segment's all seem to be there ,I flashed a flashlight on It. but It's been awhile since I've had one of these so I could be missing some. The L&R bar's are all there up to the red (Ive seen pics of theses missing some) ,my tape's are mostly recorded just below the red. So not sure up above. Sounds like the lamps won't be too bad.

hi your welcome.....which box would you say is the best sounding out of what you have...i know which one i would say....just interested in your opinion

347.tony - 2013-02-25 19:59

My Fav Is the Rc-m90, It hold's together well at high/full volume, clean and clear the 70 and the Pani are pretty close(to each other) but I like the 70 better. The Sony ahhhh just a boombox, doesn't have any real Dynamic's, It doesnt give me to many excited thought's. Lol the 550 sound's good! but just doesn't have the oomf at high/full volume ,so It's still the 90 for me. The Yorx, much below the Sony. This Is just my opinion though everybody hear's differently. Most of my music Is recorded on TDK SA-90 tape's which I made back In the 80's ,recorded so that the peak Is just touching the red which allow's me In most cases to use full volume.

just goes to show we have different opinions haha i wasn't expecting this result haha...to me tha panny sounds best bass wize but not ultra loud...the m70 i must of had a bad one as i didnt rank it anywhere near the panny....it just lacked deep warm bass....and the m90 is pretty good....highs superb but i find it lacks in bass but still the bass isn't bad.had many of these...with outstanding power....the sony i just found rubbish haha...and you need to buy a pc55 as these sound better than the 550....i find they have great power but just lack bass....much better when you put modern speakers in.....btw where do you set the 100hz slider on the panny? i find it sounds much richer warmer with the slider on half with the super bass on full

Hi Tony,

I'm fortunate to have a fully working 550 with handle, these units are a little bass shy but they can CRANK like no other when that  volume is turned up!

@RR what lamps did you use Reno. I was under the impression that these particular lamps were very hard to come by? Do you have a part # and supplier. I ask because I have a bead on another 550 that needs a little TLC.

347.tony - 2013-02-26 09:32

Yes part# for lamps would be excellent! tk's

347.tony - 2013-02-26 09:38

Now to be honest I didn't have enough time with the cassette section of the Panny prob need's a belt. but the CD does sound very good. Oh and with a CD  the EQ bass Is a hair under half and the Super Bass Is at half. I find It get's a little muddy when I turn the Super Bass up past half.

I've never heard that Panny model so I can't offer any advice. A new belt is never a bad idea though!

Here's a pic of my 550's lights still in action. @RR do they still make them this shade or are they a different colour?

I doubt you can get the original ones any more guys.....this is what i use....it is less volts than the original and the original is covered in a blue plastic sleeve....which you need to take off and put on the new ones.....

I play the Panny here with CD. Super Bass at half any higher and I find It get's a bit muddy.
