New Box, Lasonic

michiel - 2013-07-04 03:21

Hi Guys, scored a cool 50 euros box yesterday evening! My first hollow black box, a Lasonic! Its very very well used, but everything still works. Even the in-slot cassette! This morning I glued the transformer feet back into the box as it was floating around lol... Sound of this piece is great! Bass goes really deep! This evening I gonna blow the dust out of it with compressed air. There are even spiderwebs inside it! Hope you enjoy the pics!

Nice looking though...wouldn't mind one myself for that sort of price...congrats

radio.raheem - 2013-07-04 06:05

For christ sake send it back M lol

lav.loo - 2013-07-04 07:49

that's the 1st gen one, gotta say I loved mine and the bass was spot on nice grab for the price Michiel, ignore this lot

michiel - 2013-07-04 08:11

Haha, it is an horrible machine indeed! The inside is even worse! Just lots of plastic, some illogical placed boards and a super tiny transformer. Find it strange that such a box sounds quite good considered it emptiness. Yep Lav the bass very good! It beats my Crown 980 without any problem!

But it definitely has the looks! Walking outside with it gives all kind of nice comments. People think I've become totally nuts by now lol I kinda start to like it! Cant send it back, it was a local find! Amazing cause these are hardly seen here in Holland!

Do you guys know a way to get the white spots of latex wall paint off? Without destroying the plastic "shine"?

Do you guys know a way to get the white spots of latex wall paint off? Without destroying the plastic "shine"?          yes michiel all marks and stains are easily removed with a pint of petrol and a match

redbenjoe - 2013-07-04 08:33

its a big black raw crude boomer with lots of bling & chrome -

and its loud with a bass that competes with anything portable -

GREAT FIND

ooooh Chris

michiel - 2013-07-04 13:56

Haha, no way Chris, I'm not gonna burn this baby! Im totally with redben, it's super bling goes loud and it's raw. Better; even girls like it!  Spend the whole evening cleaning it with result. Got most of the white paint of with good old alcohol. Didnt even break anything. From a distance, 2 meters, it looks like new now  Are all black empty boxes like this?? If so, have to get more of them!

Somebody posted some pics of the inside of a Discolite the other day, i totally shocked at how empty that was

I would have grabbed that 931 in heartbeat for 50 euros

no Michiel not all black boxes are like the 931, example the crown sz5100 is the lightest emptiest of them all. the lasonic is built like a tank compared to the crown lol

deech - 2013-07-05 06:30

bronxbomber - 2013-07-05 07:58

lav.loo - 2013-07-05 09:28

no BB that's the 3rd edition released about 91/92, notice the more rounded edges. the 1st edition was around 85/86 and the 2nd around 87/88 I think. I had the 2nd edition and loved it

northerner - 2013-07-05 10:05

I like your 1st edition better...I like boxes to have straight edges and right angles!

There's not a lot inside is there, but looks nice on the outside

Old Skooool  square boxes!

michiel - 2013-07-05 14:11

Man this box booms! Just went through a Mantronix and a LL Cool tape. It's bass is like thunder! The highs are also great. Dont understand how this empty thing can sounds so brutal! Must be a very efficient design or something

Discoverd a very annoying design flaw though... When you get the power cord out of its compartment all d-cels jump out...

Lav why did you get rid of yours???? The D8614 rules, but this thing is just...

radio.raheem - 2013-07-05 14:30

michiel if you weren't in the states id trade you that big pioneer for this box....but the pioneer needs a hellova lot of work and would cost way to much to send

think I needed the cash at the time Michiel believe me I regretted it ever since and would love to acquire another 1st or 2nd gen, very unlikely though

michiel - 2013-07-05 21:43

Needing cash is a good reason to shift some boxes away for sure. Hope I dont have to do this in the near future. Although I'm selling some of the smaller boxes I lost interest in to have some cash and space available if something nice pops up localy. Hope you run against one of these black monsters soon lav. For a good price ofcourse

Reno I'm not in the states, but just across the north sea. Same country as walkgirl  but I ant gonna get rid of this black one yet. Pretty sure I won't ever find an other one around here. This box wasn't in the stores over here 30 years back as I remember. Most likely it ended up here via an American GI stationed in Germany. Most of my bigger boxes have this kind of history...

andyboombox - 2013-07-06 01:28

i had the unisef sz5100 last year and hated it-it never worked right, but the look was ok....this lasonic looks similar if somewhat more of a dynamic and interesting look-but its still a posh picnic box and nothing more im afraid, however for the price and what these boxes usually go for,you did well there Michiel so well done on that front

michiel - 2013-07-06 09:13

Seen some pics of the inside of a Crown sz5100 last night, it looks like it has the electronics of a walkman inside  Its not on my wish list either. With flat equalizer the Lasonic is soundwise on pair with my Crown csc-980. The bass really kicks in when the first slider is pushed up. I've never seen speakers move that much as with this box  For black-box comparison I only have two black HK-9000's and they blow the Las away even on battery and volume at half...

Today I build in a charger plug for the rechargeable d-cells and trimmed the motor speed. This posh box is dedicated to spend lots of time outside

mitchelljames - 2013-07-06 09:38

Of the three very similar black boxes, The Crown, The Unisef and The Lasonic, the Lasonic is the one to have.

When i got my Unisef i had the option for a Lasonic instead but i wouldnt go the extra few ££'s, i assumed as they all look similar they must all sound similar and they dont.

Infact, now a few years later, i dont even think they look all that similar

Same story hear MJ, When I started collecting I bought a crown sz5100 just because  I wasn't prepared to slash out a bit more for the Lasonic. Wish I had now though! 50 Euros was a bargain Michiel! Its a great looking box and its cleaned up really well too congarts mate!

It was me that posted the pics of the Discolite innards, here they are again!

Wauw that discolite is empty! But I would like to have one for sure!

Here is the pic of the inside of the Crown SZ-5100 I found on the net. Check out the stamps on the speakers...

Lasonic: 20-35W @ 4 ohm

Crown: 7-15W @ 8 ohm

That's a major difference! These boxes have not much in common I guess. Also got the feeling the Lasonic is a bigger box. Love to see a comparison pic of these two!

smeats1976 - 2013-07-06 12:57

Never looked inside my Crown so thanks for the pic! I've heard you can replace belts without removing the tape deck so thats one advantage! Notice how the Crown has tweeter grills but no tweeters! I'd bet it could be improved with new woofers and tweeters from a hi-fi! The Crown has no proper line in and when I used the Mic input I get a background whistling noise, very annoying

Finally, I believe the Crown and your Lasonic are the same size, Im sure I've seen pics before but can't find any! maybe somone here has one!

michiel - 2013-07-06 21:57

Think the Crown does have tweeters. I see wires go from the speakers to something that look like super tiny tweeters. Replacing the speakers isn't going to help I'm afraid. It probably needs a better amp too.

Replacing the belts on the lasonic is fairly easy. The decks are easy to get out. The belts too. Only problem I had was with the soft touch controls of B because I disturbed the sequence of it when changing the tire. Took some patience to find neutral again lol

Dont know about line-in on the las. It has RCA for Line-in, Line-out and Phono. But I can only select Phono with the selection switch. Didn't play with it yet as I'm using a fm transmitter for the iPod.

smeats1976 - 2013-07-07 05:05

I see the little tweeter on the right of your pic now! the left one is hidden by a pcb. You're right, Its not a box I'd bother to mod, If a Lasonic came up for sale I would be tempted to buy it and just flog the crown They're a bit rare in Europe without spending silly money!
